Platinum draws fresh interest from China's jewelers as gold prices test buyers' wallets
Chinese jewelers are snapping up platinum as they seek to bounce back from a slump in gold jewelry sales, an industry group said.
Surging gold prices, which hit a record high above $3,500 an ounce in April, have deterred even buyers from China, who have a cultural attachment to the yellow metal.
In the first quarter of the year, gold jewelry sales in China tanked nearly 27% from a year ago to 134.5 tons, according to the China Gold Association.
Meanwhile, gold bar and coin consumption surged nearly 30%, showing that investor demand for haven assets remains strong.
"Jewelry fabricators and distributors are trying to save themselves because gold jewelry sales are falling off a cliff. They need to find a new metal for jewelry so that they can survive," Weibin Deng, the regional head for Asia Pacific at the World Platinum Investment Council, told Business Insider.
China imported 11.5 metric tons of platinum in April, its highest monthly intake in a year.
That demand has helped push global platinum prices up around 40% year-to-date, with spot prices near $1,265 per ounce. Spot gold prices have also surged, up roughly 30% over the same period.
The price of platinum is still about one-third of gold, making the white precious metal a compelling proposition for Chinese consumers. In China, jewelry is generally priced by weight rather than on a per-piece basis, said Deng.
"It cannot be too expensive, otherwise people wouldn't buy it," he said of the price-sensitive Chinese market.
Goldman Sachs analysts wrote on Tuesday that platinum's blistering rally lacks fundamental support. They said the metal's issues include price-sensitive Chinese demand, slowing auto demand, and the expectation that there will be no significant decline in supply.
The analysts attributed strong gains in the platinum market to speculative demand and high gold prices, which are keeping investors away from trading in the yellow metal.
"This hesitancy likely stems from investors believing they missed the initial rally," wrote the Goldman analysts, referring to the blistering gold rally earlier.
"Instead, interest has shifted to other precious metals as investors seek catch-up opportunities," they wrote.
How the World Platinum Council plans to boost demand
The WPIC is stepping up marketing and public education to position platinum as a precious metal that has investment value and room to run, Deng said.
Deng said the council is also working with Chinese jewelers to be more efficient in terms of fabrication and market operations to lower prices for consumers
Deng said it's more expensive to work on platinum than gold as it requires more energy to melt the white metal. But reducing production costs is key to making platinum jewelry more accessible to consumers, he added.
Another challenge: The gold market is far more liquid. It's easier for consumers to sell or trade in gold jewelry with a small discount.
WPIC is partnering with jewelers in China to develop similar resale channels for platinum pieces.
Platinum isn't just for jewelry. It's used in everything from car parts to electronics. That broad demand helps support its value.
But according to Deng, it's platinum's visibility in jewelry that plays a crucial role in how consumers perceive it as a precious metal.
"Gold and silver have long been seen as currencies and stores of value around the world. To make the platinum jewelry market sustainable, consumers need to view platinum the same way — as a store of value," he said.
Deng acknowledged that gold is likely to remain the ultimate store of value in the eyes of the consumer, but even a small demand switch from gold to platinum would be significant.
The BofA analysts wrote last week that even a 1% switch in gold to platinum jewelry could help double the white metal's supply deficit to 1.6 million ounces, which would help support prices.

"Do you need a U.S. warehouse?" "Do you need a Mexico warehouse?" "Shipping to Europe?" Salespeople, speaking in Mandarin Chinese, weren't shy about pushing their logistics services when I attended the 10th Shenzhen International Cross-Border E-Commerce Expo this week. One logistics company even hired foreign-looking models in glittery silver dresses to parade around the venue. It's one of the biggest events of the year for companies selling from China to the U.S. and other countries via the internet. In the midst of a tepid truce in the U.S.-China tariff war, many companies appeared eager to enter the U.S. market. But the game to survive has changed. "The past 30 years have helped Chinese companies to become very mature in supply chain integration," Tina Hsu, partner at startup AIGC Empower, told me in Mandarin at the expo. "Today, if there is a tool that can help [businesses] tell a story better, resonate with users … they could go overseas with the identity of a brand to operate in a healthier manner that's longer term and with higher profits." AIGC Empower claims it has those tools. At a joint launch with Amazon and Wayfair in Zhuhai, China, last month, Hsu said AIGC introduced two generative AI-powered products: a system for quickly researching local markets to understand consumer needs, and a tool for producing images for product advertisement. The service starts at 10,000 yuan ($1,390) per product per year — and has already received around 100 orders, Hsu said. "To be honest, it's not every customer here who can appreciate the value" of our product and the need for branding, she said, noting it's Chinese entrepreneurs who studied abroad that understand it best. But she warned that without inherent differentiation, Chinese companies will find it hard to survive overseas in the next 30 years. While a few companies with Chinese roots such as Temu and Shein have grabbed the most attention when it comes to cross-border e-commerce, several smaller Chinese businesses have also been tapping the internet to sell directly to overseas consumers, as competition at home has intensified. "The U.S. consumer market is still the world's largest, and the destination for most cross-border e-commerce sellers," said Li Xiaoming, distribution manager at Miao Shou, which sells software that allows merchants to analyze data from multiple e-commerce platforms in one place. That's according to a CNBC translation of his Mandarin-language remarks. Although companies have turned to other countries, they're still holding onto some resources for deploying into the U.S. market — if conditions improve in the next few months, he said. Regardless, Chinese sellers are piling into the cross-border e-commerce trend. Miao Shou claimed that it had a total of 800,000 customers as of June, with around 200,000 companies joining the platform in the past six months. Li said the company aims to double clients' sales transaction volume on its platform this year. To stand out in such a competitive environment, these companies need better branding and marketing, especially in the current trade climate. "We believe tariffs this time mark a process of complete market reshuffling," pushing out companies that previously only relied on price, not product quality, to compete, Bear Huo, China general manager at fintech startup FundPark, said in Mandarin, translated by CNBC. With $750 million in financing from Goldman Sachs and HSBC, FundPark lends money to smaller Chinese businesses selling their wares overseas. Huo, who used to work at Alibaba, said that the startup has become an official loan provider for certain Chinese sellers on Walmart, and aims to reach a similar partnership with sellers on Amazon later this year. Huo said FundPark is lending more to businesses for advertising as clients have ramped up their marketing spend to up to 20% of the product transaction value — a jump from 3% to 5% in 2023. While ad spending can lead to short-term spurts in sales, building a brand is a longer-term process, and a far more challenging task. Even advertising legend John Hegarty has described the difficulties of getting companies to make bold, transformational moves in order to stand out in the market. But if Chinese exporters are to compete globally, they need to focus on the hard task of building a brand. It's similar to what's playing out in China's cut-throat electric-car industry. Companies have been slashing prices and offering more high-tech features, but to stand out over the longer-term, they need to create brands that resonate with consumers. Some Chinese companies believe they already have what it takes to build a brand, but lack the legal resources to protect themselves — especially as market incumbents launch targeted lawsuits that can force a Chinese seller to go out of business. It's become such a pressing challenge that a group of Chinese merchants have backed a new platform that uses a low-cost insurance structure for litigation services that can otherwise be quite expensive, according to Jack Zhang, secretary-general at the Shenzhen Cross-Border E-Commerce Association's legal insurance division. He's leading the project with a team of about 30 people. His plan is to group lawsuits into the thousands or tens of thousands, thereby negotiating a lower rate with law firms in the U.S. or another market. It's far from an operating service, and Zhang hopes he can reach the 1,000-case threshold around this time next year. Several companies at the expo also advertised services from compliance to business registration — getting a U.S. trademark will cost the equivalent of $485, now available at a $150 discount, one flyer said. Her climbdown on denying millions of pensioners the winter fuel allowance was not the only U-turn announced by Rachel Reeves, the U.K.'s chancellor of the Exchequer, this month. Less significant in political terms, but of far greater importance to the U.K.'s long-term growth potential, was an announcement on June 10 that the government would commit £750 million ($1 billion) worth of funding for a new exascale supercomputer, capable of conducting a quintillion (one billion billion) operations per second, at Edinburgh University. The news reversed a previous decision, made days after the Labour government was elected in July last year, to pull some £800 million worth of funding for the project announced by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's administration in 2023. Edinburgh had already spent an estimated £30 million on supporting infrastructure and the decision dismayed the U.K.'s scientific community which warned that, at a time when the U.S. has two exascale computers, China has two and both Japan and France are building their own, it would leave Britain lagging its peers. The timing of the U-turn was no coincidence. Just two days later, to mark the start of London Tech Week, Prime Minister Keir Starmer shared a platform with Jensen Huang, Nvidia's founder and CEO, where both talked eagerly about the power of artificial intelligence to transform lives. During the session, though, Huang had a stark warning for the U.K. "The U.K. has one of the richest AI communities anywhere on the planet. The deepest thinkers, the best universities in Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College, amazing startups like DeepMind, Wayve, Synthesia, an incredible research community," he said. "It's just missing one thing. This is the largest AI ecosystem in the world without its own infrastructure." Cynics will say that Huang's message — chipmaker urges more investment in infrastructure that requires chips — does not look that different from a stockbroker urging clients to buy stocks. It is inconceivable, though, that the government would not have been made aware of it in advance. And restoring funding for the Edinburgh supercomputer suggests the message landed with Starmer and Reeves. Yet the U.K. tech sector faces other challenges. One is that the U.K.'s AI startups are way behind their American and Chinese peers in the sums they are raising from venture capitalists. That, potentially, is as much of a weakness, longer term, as a shortage of sovereign AI computing infrastructure. However, a broader worry is that the U.K. may be losing momentum in quantum computing, the revolutionary way of processing information faster than classical computing. Just up the A40 trunk road, on the same day Starmer was on stage with Huang, the quantum hardware startup Oxford Ionics, a spin-off from the University of Oxford, agreed to a $1.1 billion takeover by Maryland-based IonQ. The sale has revived concerns, first mooted when the AI start-up DeepMind was bought by Google in 2014, that the U.K. is nothing more than a tech "incubator," where businesses are born before being scaled up elsewhere. As Tina Stowell, former chair of the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee, put it: "I am genuinely sorry about its loss to the U.K. as a British business, even if, under new ownership, it continues to operate here." "What we have seen this week is another example of a worrying trend," she added. There are fears that other companies in the space may follow suit. "This [takeover] is a reflection of the top-notch quality of U.K. quantum R&D, built on decades of public funding, but also an example that will be watched closely by other quantum companies seeking capital and opportunities that can be hard to find in the U.K.," Ashley Montanaro, co-founder and CEO of the quantum software company Phasecraft, wrote in an article for the British tech industry publication UKTN. "There's already more public funding available for quantum companies in the U.S. than in the U.K., more fellowships, more state and federal grants and contracts, and more support for scale-up and deployment." "Even with President [Donald] Trump's recent pushback against universities, private capital ultimately follows public money, and several of our peers have joined us in opening labs overseas to access such support, knowledge and capital," he added. Highlighting delays to the implementation of the U.K.'s National Quantum Strategy, announced two years ago, he noted there would be no new government funding for quantum computing projects until autumn at the earliest — while at the same time, the U.S was in the process of doubling federal quantum funding and other countries, among them Canada and Finland, had stepped up investment in the field. Montanaro went on: "Once the talent, capital and momentum go elsewhere, they rarely return." The U.K. government's newly rediscovered passion for supercomputers that will help power the AI revolution is heartwarming. But AI is only one part of the U.K.'s tech ecosystem and the worry must be that, in fields like quantum computing, it is in real danger of falling behind. Meanwhile, although Starmer and his ministers now appear to see AI as an unalloyed force for good, others may disagree. This week, in a rare interview, Alison Kirkby, BT's chief executive, told the Financial Times the company's plans to cut more than 40,000 jobs and strip out £3 billion worth of costs by the end of the decade "did not reflect the full potential of AI". She told the paper: "Depending on what we learn from AI … there may be an opportunity for BT to be even smaller by the end of the decade." Most of the jobs expected to go under existing plans were those of engineers specifically hired to build BT's fiber network whose roles became redundant once the project was complete. The chances are that, in this instance, Kirkby was referring to BT's call centers, which employ thousands of people in locations including Plymouth, Greenock and North Tyneside, as well as the company's HR functions. Technical Outlook Favors Tactical Options Strategy on PDD Holdings Stock (PDD)
At first glance, circumstances don't look appealing for PDD Holdings (PDD). A global e-commerce holding company, PDD is, of course, tethered to the health of the Chinese consumer economy. Its two core platforms are Pinduoduo, a social-commerce enterprise, and Temu, a budget online marketplace that brings significantly discounted goods directly from China. However, with the advent of President Donald Trump's trade tariffs, such businesses face extra scrutiny. Confident Investing Starts Here: To be sure, diplomats from both the U.S. and China have finished a first round of negotiations, concluding with a new framework. While details have been modest, the deal includes assurances on the supply of rare-earth minerals and potential tariff easing. At the same time, critics have lashed out, not only due to the lack of specifics but also in the form of skepticism that any meaningful progress has been made. Fundamentally, though, investors should note that the Trump administration likely understands the consequences of acting too aggressively and thus is unlikely to be irrational. It's like the reason why the President tends to walk back hard-hitting policies and rhetoric. Just the fact that this framework has materialized is evidence that the White House isn't really prepared to go toe-to-toe with the Chinese. That's good news for PDD stock from an investment perspective. It might even be better news for bullish options traders like me. Understanding the Architecture of Speculation for PDD Stock For traditional buy-and-hold investors, they often deal with long-term frameworks. When analysts assign price targets, they're usually 12-month forecasts. Such an extended period provides ample flexibility for the underlying thesis to unfold. Subsequently, the research that investors conduct focuses on the 'why' of a particular asset or enterprise. On the other hand, traders are focused on the 'how' — as in, how much, how fast, and how likely. In other words, traders live in the world of probabilities. This is because options expire, meaning that a proposed strategy cannot just address the magnitude of movement (or the y-axis); the trade must also pan out within the allocated time period (x-axis). When it comes to statistical analysis, traders must have a firm understanding of the overall architecture. For most practical applications, there are two types of probabilities: derivative and conditional. The former represents the odds of a particular outcome materializing across the entire distribution of the target dataset. In colloquial terms, the derivative probability is a baseball player's batting average last season. On the other end of the statistical spectrum, the latter concept represents the odds of an event materializing from a specific subset of the data. To extend the baseball analogy, a conditional probability would be the equivalent of a player's batting average when there are runners in scoring position (RISP). For the purposes of trading, conditional probability is essentially the 'probability of the now' — how likely is the proposed setup to work when you decide to pull the trigger? While the above concept may sound simple, calculating conditional probabilities requires critical discretization. Going back to the baseball analogy, batting average with RISP can be calculated because RISP is a discrete event — if there are no runners on second or third base, then there is no RISP. Similarly, the only practical way to discretize price action is to convert it into market breadth sequences — or sequences of accumulative and distributive sessions. By doing so, the dataset speaks one coherent language that is categorizable, quantifiable, and ultimately projectable. Analyzing Market Breadth to Narrow Down a Bullish Strategy Ultimately, market breadth is a representation of demand, and demand is a binary construct — it's either happening or it's not. Further, the balance of demand can provide traders with a statistical framework for the likelihood of transition from one behavioral state to another based on past conditional analytics. For example, in the past two months, PDD stock printed a '7-3-U' sequence: seven up weeks, three down weeks, with a net positive trajectory across the 10-week period. Since making its public market debut, this sequence materialized 44 times. In 54.55% of cases, the following week's price action results in upside, with a median return of 8.16%. On Friday, PDD stock closed at $100.58. Should the implications of the 7-3-U pan out as projected, PDD stock could reach nearly $109 in short order, perhaps in a week or two. Based on the market intelligence above, the most aggressive speculators may consider the 102/105 bull call spread expiring July 3. This transaction involves buying the $102 call and simultaneously selling the $105 call, for a net debit paid of $127 (which is the most that can be lost in the trade). Should PDD stock rise through the short strike price (105) at expiration, the maximum reward is $173, a payout of over 136%. What makes this trade attractive is the implied shift in sentiment. As a baseline, the chance that a long position in PDD stock will be profitable over any given week is only 50%. With the statistical response of the 7-3-U sequence, the odds of upside have tilted in favor of the bulls. Granted, it's a modest advantage, but the trade does favor the long side of the transaction. Additionally, the market is arguably unfamiliar with the risk-modeling protocol mentioned above. Is PDD Stock a Good Buy? On Wall Street, PDD stock carries a Moderate Buy consensus rating based on eleven Buy, eight Hold, and two Sell ratings over the past three months. PDD's average stock price target of $124.45 implies approximately 21% upside potential over the next twelve months. Leveraging Probability to Take Advantage of PDD Stock While the investment narrative for PDD Holdings is arguably compelling, it may take a while for analysts' projected price targets to materialize. On the flipside, speculators can use the leverage of options to potentially extract significant gains over a short period of time, so long as they're willing to take the risk of losing their entire principal. However, through the usage of conditional probabilities, one can improve the odds of success.
