With fires burning across B.C., is it safe to continue with travel plans?
But with forest fires raging across the province, is it advisable to travel?
'The August long weekend feels like the height of summer for us,' says Ellen Walker-Matthews, CEO of the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association, where a wildfire is burning near Peachland. 'We welcome people to continue with their plans.'
The patio at Bliss Bakery in Peachland was busy on Thursday, said owner Barry Yeo. Guests enjoyed baked goods and a water show as helicopters picked up buckets of water from the lake.
The bakery has a strong customer base, but business triples in the summer months, he said.
'It should be business as usual this weekend,' he said.
Harrison Hot Springs is also open despite a wildfire burning about 20 kilometres away on the eastern shore of Harrison Lake.
'The village and the resort are very much open,' said Erinn Kredba, interim executive-director of Tourism Harrison River Valley. 'This is a long weekend and businesses still need people to come.'
Near Lytton, Kumsheen Rafting Resort was still launching rafts on Thursday, although a staff member said she had been fielding calls all morning from people wondering if their trips had been cancelled.
But the invitation to visit does come with some caveats.
While this time of year invites ease and relaxation, it's best to stay informed. Below is a collection of places you can find current wildfire information as you head out this weekend.
Where can I find information on B.C. fires?
The B.C. Wildfire Service website shows fires that are currently burning in B.C., with information about their location, size, cause and related closures. For example, the wildfire service is asking people to avoid a specific part of Harrison Lake this weekend, including the area north of the Cascade Peninsula and south of Silver River as fire crews, including planes and helicopters, are active in that area.
Are roads closed due to wildfires?
The DriveBC website is one of the best places to find information on road closures, as you can enter your starting point and destination to see closures in effect along your route. The wildfire near Peachland had traffic down to a single lane on part of Highway 97 on Thursday, with updates provided every few hours.
What if there is an evacuation alert?
Evacuation alerts and orders are put in effect by local governments or First Nations, so their websites are usually the best place to find detailed information. Central Okanagan Emergency Operations can tell you about the fire near Peachland and emergency support services for evacuees. EmergencyInfoBC also posts evacuation updates, including the recent order issued by Lytton First Nation. There is also an evacuation alert for the backcountry area near the Harrison fire, which impacts some recreation campsites.
Will it be smoky on my trip?
Despite the out-of-control wildfire burning near Peachland, the skies were blue on Thursday, said Sebastian Wunderlich, who was manning the visitor centre.
'I can see across the lake,' he said, noting a slight haze in the air.
Smoke forecasts change with the wind. So far, areas near some of B.C.'s most notable fires have not been very smoky, but you can find a smoke forecast on the Fire Smoke website.
What else should I know before I go?
It's also a good idea to check the local tourism page before you depart to see if they make any specific recommendations about wildfires. Many have a 'know before you go' section that addresses how to travel during wildfire season and provide a collection of local resources and information.

Travelers Walked All Over Spain and Italy With This Anti-theft Crossbody Bag With ‘Lots of Room'—and It's on Sale
Between flights, unpredictable weather, and a packed itinerary, vacations can come with a lot of variables. One thing that is in your control is having a trustworthy collection of travel bags. While that starts with spacious luggage, it also includes a crossbody bag that keeps all of your essentials organized. The Travelon Crossbody bag from Target is made with anti-theft material and is currently on sale for 21 percent off. The now-$63 bag has multiple pockets that feature locking measures, and it has an adjustable strap—making it a must-have for domestic and international trips. 5While you might think any purse can work for trips, this crossbody bag has an interior wallet and card slots that are secure thanks to an RFID-blocking material, which helps to keep your information safe. The bag also has slash-resistant body panels and shoulder straps for added safety. Plus, each zipper compartment locks to prevent pick-pocketers. This added protection will ensure peace of mind both while you're away and for day-to-day use. The impressive organizational elements also make this option stand out when compared to standard purses. In addition to the main compartment, the bag has two zippered pockets in front, a rear zipped pocket, and a mesh expansion that is designed to hold a water bottle, to-go coffee mug, umbrella, or sunglasses case. All of these sections mean that you can fit a lot in the bag without it feeling bulky or disorganized. Multiple shoppers gave this bag a five-star rating, including one who said it offers 'lots of room for travel items' and is 'handy when on tours,' like walking around a new city. Another person who brought this on a trip to Italy that required 'intense walking' said they really liked the 'clever expandable water bottle sleeve,' adding that it is big enough to hold 'snacks and souvenirs.' A third reviewer who brought this lightweight and 'roomy' bag on a trip to Spain said the 'clasps are easy to latch and unlatch' when taking your items out. They also added that their 'belongings stayed secure' in this purse because the locked zippers are still 'too cumbersome for a pickpocketer to finagle.' This travel-ready bag is currently available in a midnight blue color for $17 off. Snag it before your next trip, and keep scrolling for more options at Target. Love a great deal? Warning to tourists as power outage cancels Eurostar journeys
Eurostar passengers travelling to and from Paris are facing severe disruption and cancellations on Monday, after a critical section of the French rail network was temporarily shut down. France's railway company, SNCF, attributed the chaos to a power outage near Moussy, approximately 50km north of Paris. The incident, which began around 8am, necessitated "major repairs". It is expected to cause delays until late evening. A Eurostar spokesperson said that passengers could "exchange their tickets free of charge or request a full refund." Travellers are being advised to postpone their journeys if possible. Eurostar's online timetable showed six trains from London to Paris were delayed on Monday, some by up to two hours, and five others were cancelled. Meanwhile, five journeys from Paris to London were delayed and four were cancelled. Routes connecting London to Amsterdam, London to Brussels, and Brussels to Amsterdam remain unaffected by the French network issues. The widespread disruption impacts one of Europe's busiest international rail corridors, occurring at the peak of the summer travel season.

If you're a frequent traveler, you know how valuable comfortable footwear is, and you likely know that finding a pair that's stylish, supportive, and reasonably priced can feel next to impossible. Luckily, I recently came across Naturalizer's selection of travel-friendly sandals, sneakers, and loafers, and, believe it or not, the shoes tick all of those boxes. The podiatrist-recommended shoes come in plenty of fashion-forward silhouettes, but more importantly, each of them is made with a contoured footbed that's flexible, shock-absorbing, and ultra-lightweight. It's also worth mentioning their inclusive sizing, with extra-wide, wide, medium, and narrow options. I did some digging to find the best deals on the comfy travel shoe brand at Amazon, Nordstrom, Zappos, and Naturalizer's site, with styles up to 65 percent off. From chic, platform sandals to comfy sneakers you can walk miles pain-free in, shop all my top picks, starting at $37. Mary Jane flats have made a comeback, and this comfortable pair is the perfect travel companion for your next trip. The versatile flats have soft and lightweight cushioning, built-in arch support, and a molded heel cup, making them the ideal shoes for a day spent exploring a new city. Plus, the velcro strap makes them easy to take on and off, and the padded collar won't cut into your foot. One reviewer who got these for a trip to Italy wrote, 'My foot is slightly wide and flat. I can even put my orthotics in them. There was a little break in period, but I didn't get blisters or anything." $115 $41 at Amazon $115 $45 at Nordstrom Feel confident you're putting your most comfortable foot forward in these leather sneakers, with a chunky, street-style inspired design. The shoes feature the brand's patented comfort technology that's ideal for those constantly on the move. Plus, the 2.5 inch platform will add a little lift, which I love as a petite traveler. The sneakers have also garnered perfect ratings from shoppers. One Nordstrom reviewer wrote that they were able to them for over eight hours, and said they were a 'perfect' fit. A different Nordstrom shopper shared, 'These are comfortable and perfect for when I need to be standing and walking for long hours.' There's no need to worry about sacrificing style for comfort with these colorful sneakers from Naturalizer. The vintage-inspired design has a subtle, yet eye-catching silver detailing at the heel, and the shoe's upper is made with a sleek combination of leather and fabric. The best part? They're a steep 55 percent off right now, and I've already added a pair to my cart in case they sell out. $110 $44 at With still a whole month left of summer, I'm eyeing these stylish sandals for my end-of-summer beach weekends. The flatform sandals have a convenient, adjustable buckle and hook-and-loop closures that are easy to slip on and off. I love the elevated look of the black sandals, but you can also snag them in brown and a metallic pewter shade. $110 $50 at Amazon $110 $39 at These packable loafers are an easy-to-throw-on and go travel shoe that will elevate any look, from day to night. The ultra-comfortable penny loafers have a durable outer sole and a cushioned, shock-absorbing interior. They're currently a rare $72 off, bringing the price down to just $39. A steal! The comfy footwear has a breathable mesh upper and a slightly wedged heel for an added lift. One shopper raved that they're 'comfortable from the start,' adding that the sneakers are 'perfect' for walking after recently breaking their foot. These fashion-forward, comfort-focused slingback sandals will make a stylish addition to any summer travel look. The ultra-lightweight shoes can easily slip on and off with an adjustable buckle closure. One Amazon shopper shared that the sandals were recommended to them by their podiatrist, who 'loved the style.' Meanwhile, another reviewer wrote that they are 'super comfy,' and added that they were 'great on the first day of wear.' Upgrade your sneaker game with these denim lace-up platform sneakers, featuring comfort-focused details like a sculpted insole, soft foam lining, and arch support with memory foam. An Amazon reviewer, who shared that their job requires them to 'stand for long periods of time,' described them as 'cute and comfy' after wearing them during a nine-hour shift, and a different fan of the shoe wrote, 'Naturalizer Soul sneakers are the absolute best.' Flat shoes are known to lack comfort, but that's not the case with these effortlessly chic, square-toe sandals. They feature an adjustable ankle strap with a hook-and-loop closure, and the comfortable, cushioned foam-lined insole offers arch support. An Amazon reviewer wrote, 'These are so comfy,' and added that they wore them 'right out of the box without any issues whatsoever.' Not only do the shoes seamlessly transition into fall, but the slip-in style is easy to kick on and off. The $41 price tag at Amazon sealed the deal for me; enough said. Even Sperry fans love this Naturalizer style, with one reviewer saying: "I love this boat shoe loafer. It is comfortable, durable and very classy looking. So cute with jeans, wide leg pants or shorts." $125 $44 at Amazon $125 $44 at Zappos These metallic silver loafers from Naturalizer will undoubtedly add a playful pop to any travel or office look. All six shades are currently on sale, with styles up to 65 percent off (the steepest discount of all my picks). Gen-Zers will certainly approve of these stylish lug-sole sandals, which don't skimp on comfort. The fisherman-style shoes are made with a flexible platform footbed and a sporty platform sole. Even better? They're 58 percent off right now, and despite being the lowest-priced pair on this list, the sandals could easily pass for a designer style, just for a quarter of the cost. Whether you're attending an outdoor summer wedding or looking for a new wedge to add to your shoe collection, this strappy option from Naturalizer is an ultra-comfy option you won't want to miss out on. One reviewer wrote, 'These shoes have been a dream,' and said that 'they are so comfortable to wear all day long.' $100 $70 at Amazon $100 $80 at These slip-on sneakers will take you from in-flight to sightseeing to dinner and wherever else your journey takes you.
