Kane Williamson Takes Sliding Catch Near Boundary Ropes, Video Goes Viral

News1817-07-2025
Williamson was playing for Middlesex in the T20 Blast match against Surrey at Lord's when, on the last ball of the seventh over, he completed a super catch.
Legendary New Zealand batter and former captain Kane Williamson is in England these days, where he is playing for Middlesex in the ongoing T20 Blast. On Wednesday (July 16), he took the field for the Lord's-based team against Surrey at the Home of Cricket and completed a superb sliding catch near the boundary ropes to end out-of-favour English batter Jason Roy's stay at the crease.
On the last ball of the seventh over of Surrey's innings, Roy, who was batting on 1 run from 3 balls, tried to play an inside-out shot against Luke Hollman. He connected the ball well, and it was going for a definite six, but then Williamson came running and completed a jaw-dropping sliding catch to stun everyone present at the stadium.
In the process he did lose his balance, but he didn't let the ball spill out of his hands.
The clip of Williamson's super effort was shared by Vitality Blast's X handle, and within no time the video went viral on the internet.
Here's a look:
Williamson, who is New Zealand's leading run getter in international cricket, hasn't played a T20I match for the Black Caps since taking the field against Papua New Guinea in Tarouba on July 17, 2024. The Black Caps are playing a T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe these days, but Kane was not available for selection for the matches.
His continued absence from the shortest format matches has raised question marks over his future in T20Is. The 2026 edition of the T20 World Cup is set to take place in India and Sri Lanka early next year, and it remains to be seen if Kane manages to find a place in New Zealand's squad.
Out for 16 runs
In the match, after Surrey posted a total of 189 runs on the board for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs, Williamson came out to bat at No. 4 in the 190-run chase but was only to score 16 runs from 13 balls. He was caught by Roy off Will Jacks' bowling, and before making his way back to the pavilion, he smacked two fours.

BCCI breaks silence on Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's ODI future before 2027 World Cup: 'If they have something in mind…'

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday reacted to speculations about Virat Kohli's and Rohit Sharma's impending ODI future after a media report indicated that their international careers could all but end in October this year. And if it comes to push, India will be without two of their stalwarts in the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. Can Rohit Sharma, left, and Virat Kohli last till 2027 World Cup?(PTI) With the England Test series over and no international action until the start of the Asia Cup in September in the UAE, speculations around the future of Kohli and Rohit in international cricket gripped Indian fans. And it was triggered by a Dainik Jagran report, which indicated that Kohli and Rohit could draw curtains on their ODI career in the tour of Australia in October this year. If they wish to prolong their career until 2027, the report revealed, they would need to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India's domestic List A tournament, to stay match-ready and in contention for selection. The BCCI's domestic participation condition, the report suggested, might prompt the duo to retire. However, a BCCI source privy to the developments told PTI on condition of anonymity that the Indian board is least bothered about Kohli and Rohit's future now, as they are completely focused on the upcoming Asia Cup and the preparations for the T20 World Cup next year. "Obviously, if they (Rohit and Kohli) have something in mind, they would tell the BCCI brass like they did before the England Test tour. But from an Indian team's perspective, the next big assignment is the T20 World Cup in February and preparations before that. The immediate focus will be on sending the best team for the Asia Cup T20 tournament, hoping all players are fit and available," the source said. The report further stated that the BCCI would never make a decision of this nature hastily, especially given the significant public interest surrounding the two players. The PTI report also dispelled media rumours about the BCCI offering them a farewell game in Sydney on October 25. A BCCI source familiar with the matter confirmed that no such discussions have taken place so far. Kohli and Rohit last played for the Indian team in the Champions Trophy earlier this year in the UAE, where India won the title. However, neither has played competitive cricket since the conclusion of the Indian Premier League.

Breaking : Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharmas ODI Future Revealed As BCCI Breaks Silence Amidst Retirement Reports

Speculation over the ODI futures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma is once again dominating the cricketing chatter. Yet, according to key voices inside the Indian cricket board, there's no urgency to make a definitive decision on the two stalwarts right now. With the Bangladesh ODI series in August cancelled, India's next 50-over assignment will take place in Australia, from October 19 to 25. In a sport where narratives often shape discussions, the current talking point is whether these two icons who between them have amassed 83 ODI hundreds and over 25,000 runs can keep going until the October 2027 ODI World Cup, when they will be 39 and 40 years old. A senior BCCI insider, speaking to PTI on the condition of anonymity, explained: 'Obviously, if they (Rohit and Kohli) have something in mind, they would tell the BCCI brass like they did before the England Test tour. But from an Indian team's perspective, the next big assignment is the T20 World Cup in February and preparations before that. The immediate focus will be on sending the best team for the Asia Cup T20 tournament, hoping all players are fit and available.' The source stressed that the BCCI prefers measured decision-making never rushing into sensitive calls, especially those involving players with massive public followings. Fan sentiment, he said, would always weigh into the equation. Both men last represented India in the Champions Trophy in Dubai. In that tournament, Kohli struck a match-winning century against Pakistan in the group stage, while Rohit produced a composed half-century in the final's successful chase. But ever since the end of the IPL, neither has played competitive cricket. Kohli, now residing in London, recently shared an Instagram story from an indoor nets session, an early sign that his training is underway. Rohit, who spent time in the UK after the IPL, has returned to Mumbai and is expected to resume his practice shortly. Media Reports There have been media whispers about the BCCI organising a farewell match in Sydney on October 25 for the duo. However, the board source dismissed this: at present, there have been no official discussions regarding such a send-off. When it comes to domestic cricket, the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India's national one-day championship, begins December 24, 2025. Before that, India will host South Africa for three ODIs starting November 30. The official explained: 'Even if they play Vijay Hazare, before that there would already be six ODIs that will be played. In between the Australia ODIs and the South Africa ODIs, there is an India A series against South Africa A where three List A games (50 overs) will be held at Rajkot on November 13, 16 and 19 respectively.' He further added: 'Now, will the duo want to play those three A games, or possibly two, before the South Africa series is the question. Even more important is whether Ajit Agarkar and his colleagues would want that.' The Vijay Hazare Trophy will also overlap with another international commitment a three-match ODI series against New Zealand slated for January 11, 14, and 18. 'So even if they play the Vijay Hazare Trophy, it can't be for more than two to three games,' the source concluded

Shubman Gill Set To Be Elevated For Asia Cup 'Leadership', Setback For This India Star: Report

Shubman Gill is all but confirmed to make his T20I return, with India's Test captain likely to be picked in the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, starting September 9 in the UAE. In his first assignament as captain, Gill excelled with the bat, scoring 754 runs to help India draw the five-match series 2-2 against England. According to a report in RevSportz, Gill is not only set for a T20I comeback, but will also be appointed as vice-captain for the tournament. "With Suryakumar Yadav set to be fit for the tournament, which will be played in T20 format this year, Gill is likely to deputise for him. This will not only mark Gill's return to the T20I setup but also enhance his status as a growing leader in the Indian dressing room across formats," the report said. Axar Patel has been serving as Suryakumar Yadav's deputy in the format following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma after the T20 World Cup last year. Gill's last T20I appearance came right after the T20 World Cup in 2024, during the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, which was Gautam Gambhir 's first assignment as head coach. Meanwhile, India's T20I captain Suryakumar has shown significant signs of achieving full fitness ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup by batting in the nets during his ongoing rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE). So far, Suryakumar has an impressive track record as India's full-time T20I captain after Rohit Sharma retired from the format post 2024 Men's T20 World Cup triumph. Suryakumar has led India in 22 matches - 17 of those have resulted in wins. Across 83 T20Is, Suryakumar has accumulated 2,598 runs at an average of 38.2 and a blistering strike rate of 167.07. He last turned out on the cricket field for Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in the Mumbai T20 League in June, making 122 runs in four innings.
