Iranian F-14 ‘Persian Tomcats' Obliterated In Israeli Airstrike
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) posted infrared targeting camera footage of a pair of F-14A Tomcat fighters being destroyed by air-to-ground munitions as they sat outside hardened aircraft shelters at Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran. The strikes were part of Israel's broadening campaign to dismantle Iran's air defense capabilities for good, which includes destroying the Iranian Air Force's fixed-wing fleet.
Since the conflict began, I have been posting on social media how this would likely mark the end of the F-14's operational career. Iran has continued to maintain a small cadre of flyable F-14s two decades after the U.S. Navy — the type's only other operator — put the Tomcat out to pasture.

The Israeli campaign to neuter Iran's air defenses in their totality is a major component of the broader air operation. Not only will it allow Israel to operate freely over Iran as it attempts to destroy the country's nuclear and long-range weapons programs, but it will also likely allow Israel to continue to access Iranian skies long after the core mission ends. This will be critical to ensuring Iran does not reconstitute its nuclear or long-range missile programs. This means destroying all aspects of the country's air defenses, including the regime's rickety fighter force.
I actually made a post on X about the two Tomcats in question, just a couple of days ago. These aircraft have been sitting outside the hardened aircraft shelters at the airbase connected to Tehran's international airport for years. Tomcats have provided quick reaction alert (QRA) coverage for Tehran in the past, along with other types, but their main station is the 8th Tactical Air Base at Isfahan. These two jets were in non-flyable condition, as are the vast majority of the survivors of the 79 F-14As delivered to the Shah of Iran back in the 1970s.

Cannibalizing airframes to keep a small number airworthy has been an ongoing practice since not long after the U.S. embargoed all support for Iran's F-14s many decades ago. Since then, Iran has been incredibly resourceful in developing its own support programs for the notoriously complex jets and smuggling components needed to keep some of them in the air. This has also come at great cost just to keep an aircraft with diminishing capabilities in the air.
Regardless, Iran's dilapidated air force didn't put up much of a fight against the IAF in the opening waves of Israel's attack, at least that we know about. We also haven't heard of the IRAF flying sorties in the east of the country, as Israel worked to gain air superiority. The threat resident primarily in ground-based air defenses, but still, eliminating Iran's tactical jet fleet once and for all is clearly a major goal. Israel has bombed hardened aircraft shelters at multiple bases in order to ensure this.

In the end, it isn't clear exactly how many F-14s remained flyable, let alone operationally relevant in a mission-capable sense, towards the end. Estimates have ranged wildly from a small handful to around 25 in recent years. It's also worth noting that, despite various efforts to upgrade the jets locally and to add new capabilities, the Iranian F-14s suffered some high-profile issues throughout their eventful service in Iran, which included the bloody Iran-Iraq war. As we discussed in the past:
'[The] F-14's once-state-of-the-art AN/AWG-9 fire control radar has suffered from low serviceability, with the Tomcat fleet effectively being divided between those with fully functioning radars and those with more diminished capabilities. The current status of any surviving AIM-54 Phoenix and AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air missiles is also a matter of debate, and Iranian programs to introduce alternative weaponry for the F-14 have had only very mixed results, as you can read more about here.'
The type was slated for replacement, with Russian Su-35s being the long-rumored candidate to do so. This aircraft would be a quantum leap in capability over the old 'Persian Cats,' but they will not capture the mystique and public fascination of the F-14. In the meantime, it appears that the Su-35s once seen to be earmarked for Iran, or at least some of them, have been exported to another Russian client, Algeria, instead.
So it seems clear at this point that if Iran ends up with any air force at all after this is all over, it is very unlikely to include the Tomcat, marking a final end to nearly five-and-a-half decades of continuous service.

Israel, Iran exchange more deadly air strikes on fifth day of conflict
June 16 (UPI) -- Israel and Iran intensified their deadly air strikes Monday on the fifth day after Israel launched its first attack to dismantle Iran's nuclear capability. Hundreds of people have been killed, including 224 in Iran and 24 in Israel, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the strikes a significant setback to Iran's nuclear program. "I estimate we are sending them back a very, very long time," Netanyahu told reporters. Iranian missiles struck Tel Aviv late Monday, the central Israeli city of Bat Yam and the Palestinian-Israeli town of Tamra as Israel Defense Forces told residents to rush to bomb shelters. "Israel's defense systems are currently working to intercept the threat," the IDF said in a statement, before allowing Northern Israel residents to leave. Iran said its ninth wave of attacks will continue through Tuesday morning, according to Iranian media. Israel said three workers at the country's Bazan Group oil company were killed earlier in the day. The power plant, which was significantly damaged, is responsible for steam and electricity production. Iran also warned Israel to evacuate two Israeli television headquarters after an Iranian state television station in Tehran was struck and one of its workers was killed. President Donald Trump announced Monday he would leave the Group of Seven summit in Canada to monitor the situation in the Middle East, as he warned Iranians to "immediately evacuate Tehran." "Iran should have signed the 'deal' I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social before leaving the summit. "Simply stated, Iran can not have a nuclear weapon. I said it over and over again! Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!" As Trump returned to Washington, D.C., U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered "the deployment of additional capabilities." "Protecting U.S. forces is our top priority and these deployments are intended to enhance our defensive posture in the region," Hegseth wrote in a post on X. The USS Nimitz aircraft carrier group was moving toward the Middle East to join the USS Carl Vinson. The Defense Department also announced it would move aircraft to the European and Central Command theaters to support U.S. bases in the region, according to the Navy Times. While attending the G7 summit, Trump had been in contact throughout the day with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance. Trump and Rubio returned to Washington, D.C., on Monday night, according to a State Department spokesperson. Over the weekend, Israel's strikes killed top Iranian military commanders and scientists and targeted nuclear infrastructure. While Trump has rejected any plan to kill Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Netanyahu was not ruling it out Monday, according to ABC News. Thousands of Israel's residents have evacuated in response to Iran's strikes, according to Israel's finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich. "Our teams have handled, as of Saturday, 14,583 claims for direct damage from the attacks from Iran," Smotrich said Monday. "We are assisting 2,775 residents who were evacuated from their homes, most of whom were accommodated in hotels through local authorities in a model we determined in advance," he added. So far, we have identified 24 structures, buildings that are designated for demolition."

Israeli strike on Iranian state TV fills studio with dust and debris during live broadcast
Dust and debris filled an Iranian state television studio and an anchor rushed off camera Monday when an Israeli strike hit during a live broadcast, an hour after Israel issued a warning for the area of Tehran where the station is located. Sahar Emami, an anchor at the Islamic Republic of Iran News Network, was seen hurrying off-camera as the screen behind her cut out. People on set were heard saying 'Allahu akbar," the Arabic phrase for God is great. The broadcast quickly switched to pre-recorded programs. Soon, Emami came back live from another studio and was seen speaking with another anchor. Images showed smoke and flames in the sky. The station later said that the building was hit by four bombs. Israel's defense minister took immediate credit for the attack. 'The Iranian regime's propaganda and incitement broadcasting authority was attacked by the IDF after a widespread evacuation of the area's residents,' Israel Katz said in a statement. 'We will strike the Iranian dictator everywhere.' Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesman for the Iranian foreign minister, condemned the strike, calling on the international community to demand justice from Israel for its attack on the media. 'The world is watching: targeting Iran's news agency #IRIB's office during live broadcast is a wicked act of war crime,' Baqaei wrote on X. Videos circulating on social media show that the IRINN building, known as 'the glass building,' is still burning. There has been no official report on casualties from the incident. An anchor said on air that a few colleagues had been injured, but that their families should not be worried. Why a pacifist Japan seems to be doubling down on arms exports
Japan, renowned for its pacifist constitution, is now setting its sights on the global arms exports market. Defense Minister Gen Nakatani earlier this month told Nikkei that he wanted to promote Japan's defense exports, signaling a clear shift in the country's arms policy, which has so far been largely restricted to catering to the Japan Self-Defense Forces, or JSDF. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has also signaled sharper focus on the defense sector and became the first sitting prime minister to attend DSEI Japan, the country's largest defense exhibition. While the shift in stance comes at a time when global defense spending has been on the rise, Japan's motivations are linked more to its security concerns than profiting from the surge in global arms demand, experts told CNBC. The biggest reason behind this shift is to deepen ties and increase interoperability of Japanese forces with allies and partners, said Rintaro Inoue, research associate at the Institute of Geoeconomics, a Tokyo-based think tank. By exporting its arms abroad, a country is able to improve interoperability with the purchasing parties by standardizing maintenance processes for hardware and creating joint training opportunities. "This rationale has been the main pillar after Prime Minister [Shinzo] Abe created the concept of 'proactive contribution to peace' in 2013 which aims to deepen cooperation with other Western countries in this area, and especially in security fields," he said. When the late Abe was in office, he led efforts to revise the interpretation of Article 9 of Japan's constitution to allow the JSDF to more actively contribute to international peacekeeping efforts and defend allies. Japan also wants to develop its defense industrial base, which had been in "very poor conditions" before the country moved to increase its defense budget in 2022, Inoue said. Exports will allow it to achieve the economies of scale needed to make domestic production more viable. Instead of investing in Japan's domestic defense base, the country has largely purchased weapons from the U.S., such as the F-35 fighter jets and SPY-7 radar systems. "This created a severe situation among the defense industry based in Japan, and several companies have left the industry, especially in the supply chain," Inoue said. In 2023, more than 100 companies were reported to have left the defense industry in the past 20 years. Naoko Aoki, political scientist at U.S.-based policy think tank RAND, said that Japanese defense firms have traditionally operated with limited domestic demand from the JSDF. Being able to export defense items means that companies would have a bigger customer base, helping them develop production capacities, lower costs and have more flexibility. "Even if the JSDF needed more of, for example munitions, these companies would not be eager to invest in new facilities to produce more of them, if they think that is a one-time request. If there were more stable demand at a higher level, however, they can justify the investment," Aoki said. As of 2024, Japan's arms exports stood at 21 million TIV — just 0.1% of global arms exports — according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. The TIV or trend-indicator value is a measure of the volume of international transfers of major conventional weapons. In comparison, neighboring South Korea exported 936 million TIV in 2024, with 3.3% of global arms exports, while TIV for China, the largest Asian arms exporter from 2020-2024 stood at 1.13 billion, accounting for 3.9% of global shipments. Defense is attractive as a growth sector, according to veteran investor David Roche, strategist at Quantum Strategy. "Demand will exceed supply for a decade,he said. So, building domestic capacity is of paramount importance. Roche said that if nations such as Japan stay dependent on the U.S., the Trump administration's more transactional approach will oblige them to pay for much more of their own defense, or defense equipment supplied by the pointed to U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's speech during the 2025 Shangri-La Dialogue, earlier this month: "We ask — and indeed, we insist — that our allies and partners do their part on defense ... NATO members are pledging to spend 5% of their GDP on defense, even Germany." "So it doesn't make sense for countries in Europe to do that while key allies in Asia spend less on defense in the face of an even more formidable threat, not to mention North Korea," Hegseth added. "If they distrust the U.S. to honor its treaty engagements, then individual nations must ensure their own security and spend a lot of money doing so," Roche said. Japan in 1967 adopted "Three Principles on Arms Exports" that restricted arms exports, and later expanded those principles to a practically impose an across-the-board ban on arms exports, except for transfers of military technologies to the U.S. The country relaxed this stance under Abe, with former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida easing the curbs further in 2023. The most recent changes allow defense equipment manufactured in Japan under license from foreign defense firms, including finished products, to be exported to the licensing country and from there to third countries. For example, Japan agreed in late 2023 to manufacture — under license — and export Patriot interceptor missiles to the U.S., whose stockpiles were depleted after supplying these missiles to Ukraine. Neighbor South Korea has seen increasing global interest in its arms industry and is striving to become a major global arms supplier. Will Japan be able to compete? Experts says that Japan has the knowledge, skills and technology to be a major arms supplier, but IOG's Inoue warns that Japan may face manufacturing issues due to its falling population and growing proportion of seniors. "I think it's very difficult for Japan to once again focus into manufacturing jobs," he said. RAND's Aoki pointed to still-strict regulations. "Japan has the technical capacity to do many things," but as export regulations remain severe, it will use exports mainly as a tool to strengthen its defense industrial base and defense relations with like-minded countries, particularly the U.S.
