Education ministry presses NTA over slow exam reforms after NEET-UG leak, CUET delays

New Delhi: As the National Testing Authority (NTA) continues to lurch from one controversy to another even after the NEET-UG 2024 leak case, most recently from the issue of improper stapling of NEET-UG question papers landing it in court for confusing students to electricity failures at testing centres and late scheduling of the CUET exam , the education ministry has finally begun asking questions of the authority, ET has learnt.ET has gathered that the education ministry recently asked the NTA about the status and progress on reforms suggested by the high-level committee helmed by former ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan . The communication has gone out in view of poor progress made by NTA so far on several fronts, it is learnt.The reform agenda status has been sought nearly eight months after the education ministry's committee report on exam reforms and the NTA functioning was made public. At the core of it is tardy progress on exam reforms, imperative for a NEET-UG 2026 revamp besides a more efficient and predictable conduct of all exams, such as the UGC-NET and CUET which have also become taxing for students.The committee in 2024 had made a series of recommendations to overhaul NTA in the aftermath of the NEET-UG leak case, ranging from structural reforms to re-working its test-related protocols.One of the key recommendations that got moving at the behest of the Dharmendra Pradhan-led ministry was soon after the panel report was published, with the Union minister announcing that the NTA would only focus on and conduct higher education entrance exams and not service-related exams. On various other reform moves, however, it is still the ministry which has been nudging NTA and urging changes be made, ET has learnt.It was felt that greater accountability and security apparatus can be ensured at government-run institutes functioning as test centres, compared to private schools. Internal government assessments of the NEET-UG 2024 fiasco also red flagged faulty allocation of test centres in several states. State governments and district administrations at many places also pointed out how the allocation of test centres by the NTA was puzzling in several cases as even state exams were never held at many of these.

UP Assembly To Work For 24 Hours Straight, Government To Present Vision 2047
Days ahead of Independence Day, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly will set a new record by working for 24 straight hours to discuss the government's vision for the state's development till 2047, a year which will mark 100 years since India attained freedom. The 24-hour work day will begin at 11 am on Wednesday and a roster has been drawn up of ministers to present the vision for their departments one at a time. Officials said the Uttar Pradesh chief secretary held several rounds of meetings to prepare the vision document and all aspects were discussed in detail with the principal secretaries of every department. Inputs were taken from experts as well. Speaking at midnight on Thursday will be Science and Technology minister Anil Kumar followed by Khadi and Village Industries minister Rakesh Sachan. The next set of ministers will start their presentations at 3 am, beginning with Coordination and Labour Minister Anil Rajbhar. The 6 am session will be started by Tourism and Culture Minister Jayveer Singh and the last presentation will be made by junior Education Minister Rajni Tiwari, before the session ends at 11 am on Thursday. On the reasons behind holding a 24-hour session, an official said, "The Yogi Adityanath government wants to send a clear message across the country. The idea is to make it clear that bulldozers and Hindutva are not the only things on the government's agenda and the goal is to have a developed Uttar Pradesh." While Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has appealed to the Samajwadi Party to be present in the Assembly while the vision document is being presented, the opposition party has decided to boycott it. While Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has termed the 24-hour session "madness", senior party leader Shivpal Yadav said the BJP-led government only knows how to make headlines.

Use AI to weed out duplicate voters: NCP to Election Commission
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 12 (PTI) Ajit Pawar-led NCP on Tuesday urged the Election Commission to make use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to weed out duplicate voters and other irregularities in the electoral process. NCP leaders Brijmohan Shrivastav and Avinash Adik also asked the Commission to use biometric authentication and live photography to establish the identity of voters during elections, a party statement said. The NCP leaders met the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners S S Sandhu and Vivek Joshi here as part of its interaction with presidents and authorised representatives of political parties. During the past 150 days, 4,719 all-party meetings were conducted including 40 meetings by chief electoral officers (CEOs), 800 by district election officers (DEOs) and 3,879 by electoral registration officers (EROs) engaging over 28,000 representatives of various political parties, a statement from the Election Commission (EC) said. The NCP leaders also urged the Commission to use common and verified electoral rolls for all elections. TN govt's Thayumanavar scheme for providing ration at doorstep is a victory for Vijaykanth: Premalatha
: Premalatha Vijaykanth SALEM: The Thayumanavar scheme, which the Tamil Nadu govt launched on Tuesday to provide ration commodities at the doorsteps of disabled people and senior citizens aged above 70 years, is a victory for DMDK founder Vijaykanth, said party general secretary Premalatha Vijaykanth. "When Vijaykanth mentioned in his initial election manifesto that ration items would be delivered to everyone at their doorsteps, they mocked him," she said. She appreciated Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin for realizing the first phase of Vijaykanth's visionary idea, "Veeduthedi," which focuses on delivering ration items at the doorsteps. Premalatha was speaking to reporters in Salem after attending a consultative meeting for DMDK booth committee agents. Asked about her decision to post a picture of late AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa on her social media handle, Premalatha said Jayalalithaa was her political role model. When asked if DMDK would consider joining the DMK-led alliance, she said there was a strong relationship between chief minister M K Stalin's family and her own. "When the Captain (Vijaykanth) was unwell, Stalin frequently visited him to check on his health. Likewise, upon taking office, both Stalin and Udhayanidhi sought Captain's blessings," she noted, adding that M Karunanidhi officiated her wedding with Vijaykanth. "Thus, our families share a strong friendship. However, politics and family ties are distinct," she clarified. She went on to state that her goal was to expand DMDK in all the 234 assembly constituencies in the state. "The alliance will be revealed at a party conference before the elections," she said.
