Where was ‘Kangaroo' filmed? The iconic Australian locations you can actually visit

Time Out08-08-2025
Lights, camera, outback! Australia's newest homegrown film, Kangaroo, is about to hit the big screens. Inspired by the real-life rescue work of the world-famous Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs (Mparntwe), this heartwarming movie is a tribute to the Northern Territory 's stunning and culturally rich landscapes.
The family comedy stars Aussie actor Ryan Corr (best known for Packed to the Rafters) in the role of Chris 'Brolga' Barns – the legend who established a baby kangaroo rescue centre in 2005, which later became The Kangaroo Sanctuary. From the breathtaking Tjoritja/West MacDonnell Ranges and Ilparpa Claypans to Indigenous art galleries and outback eateries, here's where Kangaroo was filmed across Australia.
What happens in Kangaroo?
Kangaroo is inspired by the true story of Chris 'Brolga' Barns – the man who founded the Baby Kangaroo Rescue Centre in Alice Springs in 2005, before going on to build The Kangaroo Sanctuary – an 188-acre wildlife haven for rescued orphaned joeys and adult kangaroos that officially opened in 2011.
The actual film follows Chris Masterman (played by Ryan Corr), an ex-TV personality who finds himself stranded in a remote town just outside Alice Springs. There, he forms an unlikely friendship with 12-year-old Indigenous Australian girl Charlie (played by Lily Whiteley). Together, the duo embark on a mission to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned joeys in the fictional outback town of Silver Gum - an adventure that transforms their lives and brings lasting change to the local community.
When is the Kangaroo movie coming out?
Kangaroo will come out in cinemas across Australia and New Zealand on Thursday, September 18.
Where was Kangaroo filmed?
Mainly filmed on location in and around Alice Springs (Mparntwe), Kangaroo showcases many of the Northern Territory's most majestic natural landscapes, along with vibrant local galleries and eateries. While Bondi Beach makes a brief cameo at the start, audiences can expect to spot both iconic landmarks and hidden NT gems throughout the film, including:
Bondi Beach, Sydney
Kangaroo opens with TV weatherman Chris Masterman broadcasting live from Sydney's iconic Bondi Beach, where he's interviewing lifeguard Jacko (played by Bondi Rescue 's Ryan Clark). But when Chris is suddenly fired, he swaps the golden sands for the red outback dirt, setting off in his trusty Corvette for a new gig.
Ilparpa, Alice Springs
Just ten minutes north of Alice Springs city centre, Ilparpa was a key filming location for Kangaroo – specifically the site of 'The Shed'. Inspired by the actual shack where Brolga lived when he founded The Kangaroo Sanctuary, this is where all of Chris' home scenes were shot. You'll see him sleeping alongside joeys, bathing them and being joined by young Charlie after school to help with feeding time.
Mount Ertwa, Alice Springs
Outside The Shed, a large fenced enclosure was built for Roger, the red kangaroo being nursed by Chris. From here, you can admire vistas of the majestic Mount Ertwa, which stands tall at roughly 807 metres above sea level.
Simpsons Gap, Tjoritja/West MacDonnell Ranges
The road into Simpsons Gap set the stage for one of the film's most pivotal scenes – when Chris' Corvette hits an adult kangaroo. Spoiler alert: he rescues the joey, Liz, from her mother's pouch. On the day, the role was played by a baby kangaroo named Sharona, who stepped in for Margot – the star joey who plays Liz throughout the film. Margot grew up so fast during production, so Sharona became her (adorable) stunt double.
Larapinta Drive
Stretching from Alice Springs to Hermannsburg, Larapinta Drive is easily one of Central Australia's most spectacular roads. Its dramatic backdrop set the scene for several driving shots in the film, including trips between Silver Gum and the vet with the rescued roos.
St Mary's Hostel, Alice Springs
'Kangaroo' is set in the fictional town of Silver Gum/Tangitjarr, with many key scenes unfolding at the Silver Gum Hotel. Inspired by classic outback pubs across the NT, the hotel was built inside the former mess hall of the Anglican hostel St Mary's – a place that provided accommodation and schooling for Aboriginal children placed by their families or committed to the Hostel by the Director of Native Affairs from 1947 onward.
The inside of the Silver Gum Hotel was fully furnished with NT products, including beer on tap!
Undoolya Station, Alice Springs
The Northern Territory's oldest cattle station was the perfect location for the 'Kangaroo Highway' in the film. Two memorable scenes were shot here: one where Charlie runs alongside a mob of kangaroos at dusk, and another where Chris rescues an injured male roo while driving a tourist bus. While Undoolya isn't open to the public, visitors can soak up incredible views of the station when visiting Emily Gap and Jesse Gap.
Eastside, Alice Springs
Charlie's house is located in Eastside – one of the first suburbs established in Alice Springs – showcasing original architecture of the town, complete with beautiful desert gardens. Local galleries like Tangentyere Artists and Hermannsburg Potters supplied real artworks that appear throughout the film's sets.
Blatherskite Park, Alice Springs
Alice Springs' biggest indoor and outdoor venue served as a base for the film's production, design and art departments. Blatherskite Park's huge sheds were filled with everything from street signs and props to locally sourced products used in the Silver Gum Hotel set. When it's not doubling as a film set, Blatherskite Park is a hub for local events. It hosts the annual Alice Springs Show, camel races, concerts and community gatherings – including the Friday night BMX Club and the Alice Springs Pony Club.
The Kangaroo Sanctuary, Alice Springs
The Kangaroo Sanctuary is the heart and soul of the film, with every joey you see on screen having been raised there. Founder Brolga, his wife Tahnee and a team of volunteers work around the clock – feeding the orphaned and injured joeys every three hours – to nurture them back to health. Once old and strong enough, the joeys are released back into the wild, or if they're not fit for release, they become a cherished part of the Sanctuary's resident mob.
Although it wasn't a filming location, the 188-acre wildlife sanctuary remains one of Alice Springs' most popular and sought-after visitor experiences.
Kangaroo comes out in cinemas across Australia on September 18, and you can watch the trailer here.

Real Housewives of London's Juliet Mayhew hits out at 'ridiculous' co-star amid feud

The new reality series kicks off in with a big bust-up and promises more drama It's fights, camera, action as The Real Housewives of London gets off to an explosive start. Socialite Juliet Mayhew is at the centre of an almighty barney in the first episode and gives us all the juicy details of what went on behind the scenes – and how it's still rumbling on. ‌ Juliet is one of six glamorous and filthy rich women launching the famous franchise in the capital. Dripping in jewels and kitted out in couture, it was handbags at dawn as Juliet and rival Panthea Parker locked horns over an old gripe from before the cameras started rolling. ‌ ‌ Iran-born Panthea, who is married to a top lawyer, took aim at every rich person's Achilles heel – their diamonds. An insulted Juliet explains: 'She goes on the show and says my beautiful engagement ring is fake. At the premiere, I'm wearing an insane emerald and covered with diamonds from Boodles. They're close family friends… and she says I borrow clothes.' Juliet, who lives in a £6million Kensington townhouse and also owns a beachside property in St Mawes, Cornwall, adds: 'It was quite ridiculous. Someone who likes to take someone down to build themselves up… it's very sad. But it's drama and everyone loves that.' Lifestyles of the rich and the soon-to-be famous, eh? The knives may be out but mum-of-two Juliet has brushed off the conflict. She tells me: 'It's like water off a duck's back. If that's the best you can come up with, we're in for a ride…' And it sounds like viewers will be, too. The Real Housewives shows, in cities such as New York and Beverly Hills, have made household names of stars such as Lisa Vanderpump and Luann de Lesseps. I can see memes and viral moments aplenty coming from the London show, with straight-talking Juliet at the centre. She explains: 'I'm an Aussie. We wear our hearts on our sleeves. People are gonna love or hate me. It's like Vegemite, right?' ‌ Stylist Juliet Angus, model-turned entrepreneur Amanda Cronin, fashion designer Karen Loderick-Peace, and cake supremo Nessie Welschinger make up the rest of the ensemble. They launched the series with a glamourous premiere this week. Comedian Katherine Ryan is hosting the series and said it was a "dream opportunity". ‌ We'll see the girls totter around London from Belgravia to Chelsea, hosting lavish dinners, eating in fancy restaurants and shopping at boutique design houses. They even escape to a Scottish castle that Juliet and her husband have invested in. But it won't be all champagne and excess, says singer, actress, entrepreneur and interior designer Juliet. She is also a passionate campaigner and charity ambassador, and is keen to show that side of herself. Juliet is helping to empower women in business and recently launched an eco-friendly soap bar that is bringing work to struggling communities in the Dominican Republic. ‌ She hopes to tempt one of her celeb mates on to the show for the next series, such as Aussie actress and singer Holly Valance. She says: 'Holly is one of my closest ride-or-dies. We've been through lots of highs and lows together. 'She's probably one of the smartest women I know and she'll tell me it as it is. She'll absolutely floor everyone.'

Ant, who was axed from the UK's SAS: Who Dares Wins in 2021, was well known for his tough persona on the show. Now a former celebrity contestant has spilled the beans on an unaired scene that infuriated Ant so much he inflicted a harsh punishment on him. Rugby ace Sam Burgess took part in the Australian version of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins two years ago, which Ant joined after he was axed from the UK show. The sportsman revealed that he was told he performed the "best escape they had ever seen on the show", but how it was never aired Spilling the beans, Sam told The Overlap and Betfair's Stick to Cricket show: 'When I did Celebrity SAS, it was a 15-day course. 20 start and only a few finish it. "By day 12, you're sleep deprived, food deprived, freezing. They'd taught us: if you're captured, try to escape - transport is your best chance. 'We get ambushed, hooded, zip-tied, thrown in stress positions. After two hours, we're loaded into a minibus. "I pop my restraints, peek under the hood and I see one driver, one cameraman, one soldier, no guns. I think I can take these guys." Celebrity SAS star axed after 'lying and cheating' on show - as another quits Continuing, he said: 'I waited for my moment, ripped the soldier's comms off, threw his phone out, choked the driver, 'Pull the f***ing van over now.' He's silent, so I start tugging the wheel. "Told another contestant to pull the handbrake and take the keys. We screech to a stop, throw them out, and I drive off with the others. 'We're free - driving around for 40 minutes - I even thought about going to KFC. Eventually I spot a pub, pull in. Fifteen minutes later, we are surrounded by cars." He the said that Ant wan't happy about his actions, and bestowed a harsh punishment on him. 5 Sam spilled the beans on what really happened when he took part in Celeb SAS Credit: PA "Ant Middleton gets on the bus, they absolutely flog us for 12 hours - tied up, thrown in shipping containers," Sam revealed. "Two contestants quit. None of it ever aired, but they told me it was the best escape they'd had.' Ant spent years fighting for his country during his military career in the Marines and the Paras. He was chief instructor on SAS: Who Dares Wins before he was sacked after a series of blunders. One included a tweet about the Black Lives Matter movement. There was a social media backlash in June 2020 after Ant posted a video of violence at anti-racism protests in London. He tweeted: 'The extreme left against the extreme right. "BLM and EDL are not welcome on our streets, absolute scum. 5 Ant is now at the helm of the Aussie Celeb SAS Credit: Seven "What a great example you are to your future generation. Bravo." The same month, Channel 4 set out a "new and clear commitment" to being an anti-racist organisation and said Ant's tweet 'in no way represent the views of Channel 4'. Discussing what happened for him to lose his job, he told The James Smith podcast: 'Witch hunt? I never thought that existed until the latest shenanigans with SAS UK. 'Ultimately people can see through it and know I was pushed before I could jump.' Speaking about the BLM tweet, Ant also defended himself at the time, telling The Sun: 'If you have half a brain cell you will realise what I was talking about. 'It was the protesters fighting and violence and rioting in broad daylight. Everything I fought for abroad to stop happening on our shores.' Meanwhile, the latest series of the UK's Celebrity SAS has been full of drama. In the first episode, two stars quit, before Love Islanders Chloe Burrows and Tasha Ghouri followed suit in the second instalment. While none of the celebrities handed in their armbands in the latest episode there was still a double exit. The Traitors star Harry Clark was given his marching orders by the furious staff. It came after they noticed he was cutting corners and not pulling his weight. His actions seemed to contribute to former footballer's Adebayo 'The Beast' Akinfenwa's decision to quit, after he shouldered much of the weight of the dinghy Harry's team was trying to transport in a race. With his bad knee flaring up, Adebayo ran out of steam due to the pain and was forced to withdraw when he couldn't continue.
