Florida football gets commitment from coveted OT Chancellor Campbell in 2026 cycle
Florida football gets commitment from coveted OT Chancellor Campbell in 2026 cycle Florida football added coveted in-state offensive tackle Chancellor Campbell to its 2026 recruiting class in the first of two signings on Sunday. The towering 6-foot-8-inch, 295-pound trench warrior out of St. Petersburg (Florida) Lakewood chose the Gators out of 18 total offers, including the Ohio State Buckeyes, Georgia Bulldogs, Colorado Buffaloes and Duke Blue Devils. Despite the other suitors, the Orange and Blue have been on top of Campbell's recruitment since the get-go. "Florida, they've always been talking to me, been on track, always messaging," he told Swamp247. "I call them, FaceTime them pretty much almost every day, they've always talked." Offensive line coaches Rob Sale and John Decoster also played a significant role in his decision to commit to Florida, as they spearheaded the efforts to get the massive lineman into the fold. "They really talked to me from the start, and I got to grow a good relationship with the coaches that lasted me this long to be able to commit," Campbell said. The program also got an assist from a recent commit — offensive lineman G'Nivre Carr out of nearby IMG Academy, who gave his word to Florida on June 1 and encouraged Campbell to join him in Gainesville. "He called me on Thursday, he was like, 'What do we have to do to get you to become a Gator?'" he said. Of course, everything in the program ultimately comes down to the head coach, which is why one particular experience following a staff dinner inside the O'Connell Center stood out. Billy Napier took it upon himself to drive the young prospect back to his hotel afterward in a gesture that really caught his attention. "If the head coach is driving you everywhere and talking to you, that must mean they want you bad," Campbell noted. "I wanted to come here from the start, but I just had to get some confirmation." And the rest, as they say, is history. At least, until it comes time to sign on the dotted line. Recruiting Summary Campbell is ranked No. 594 overall and No. 50 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 435 and 33, respectively. Why trading Jarren Duran to the Padres doesn't match up for the Red Sox, and other thoughts
The Padres have no matches outside of righthander Michael King, and they're unlikely to part with the former Boston College standout. Unless San Diego GM A.J. Preller involves a third team, it's hard to see them making a deal with the Sox for Duran. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up But the Guardians, Reds, or Mariners could make such a deal. Advertisement At some point, the Sox need to trade an outfielder to open a spot for Roman Anthony. Moving Ceddanne Rafaela to a utility role is not an answer. All that does is take a game-changing glove out of center field. A few other observations on the Red Sox: ⋅ It's too early to pass judgment on Kristian Campbell, but it's not a good sign that defensive metrics show the rookie as the worst defensive second baseman in the game outside of Washington's Luis Garcia Jr. Or that the Red Sox abandoned their plans to use Campbell at first base after several weeks of tutoring. Their reasoning — that journeyman Abraham Toro has been playing well — was specious. Advertisement Campbell's ultimate destination is probably left field, which goes back to the Sox needing to trade an outfielder. ⋅ Tuesday night's With the bases loaded and no outs, Alex Cora played the infield back with Taylor Ward up. Ward grounded to third and the Sox turned a double play as a run scored. The alternative was playing the infield in, hoping to cut down a run at the plate. 'To go to the plate there, you're taking a chance,' Cora said. 'We took a shot. It's kind of like playing the odds … Trying to force a play there didn't make sense for us.' Cora was OK with being down a run with a chance to get out of the inning knowing the Sox would have a runner on second base to start the bottom of the inning. Play the infield in and you're risking a two-run single and the inning blowing up. Based on wWPA, a statistic that measures how a particular play affected a team's chances of winning, the Angels had a 9 percent less chance to win after the double play. Down by a run, the Sox went in order in the bottom of the inning. Cora's gamble didn't pay off. ⋅ Through 64 games, the Sox had used nine cleanup hitters, who hit .200 with a .572 OPS and only 30 RBIs. The group included Campbell and fellow rookie Marcelo Mayer, plus Carlos Narváez, along with backups Romy Gonzalez, Rob Refsnyder, and Toro. Advertisement Wilyer Abreu (16), Triston Casas (12), and Trevor Story (9) have the most starts. ⋅ Gonzalez is on the All-Star ballot at first base. In the age of online voting, every team is represented at every position and Gonzalez was selected despite having made only 12 starts there. I miss the punch-card ballots you could get at the ballpark. ⋅ Rafaela's 308-foot home run on Wednesday was the shortest walkoff homer since Statcast debuted in 2015, but not the shortest homer at Fenway. CEDDANNE RAFAELA TUCKS IT INSIDE THE POLE FOR A — MLB (@MLB) Kansas City's Lorenzo Cain was credited with a 302-foot homer on July 29, 2017, off Eduardo Rodriguez. Stephen Vogt of the Giants had a 307-footer off Jhoulys Chacin on Sept. 18, 2019. Oddly enough, the Sox won both those games with walkoffs. Eduardo Nuñez beat the Royals with a ground out when Sandy Leon unexpectedly dashed home. Jackie Bradley Jr.'s homer beat the Giants. Peter Abraham can be reached at
