Rock Falls Man Who Fatally Stabbed Friend Following Argument Over Woman on Valentine's Day, Sentenced

A Rock Falls, Illinois, man will spend two decades in prison after he pleaded guilty to killing one of his friends in a fit of jealous rage.
Earlier this month, Kyle M. Cooper, 36, accepted a plea deal over the Valentine's Day stabbing death of Daniel J. Gordon, 27.
Originally charged with one count of murder in the first degree and two counts of aggravated battery, Cooper eventually pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder.
On Thursday, Cooper formally entered his plea and made an allocution before Whiteside County Circuit Court Judge James Heuerman. He was then sentenced to 20 years behind bars.
Cooper Previously Dated a Woman Gordon Later Dated
The incident took place in the early hours of Feb. 14, according to the Rock Falls Police Department. Officers arrived at the house on West 20th Street at 1:50 a.m. in response to calls about a stabbing. When they arrived on scene, they found the victim suffering from multiple "severe" stab wounds to his abdomen.
Gordon was quickly transported to CGH Medical Center in Sterling – a small town located roughly 115 miles due west of Chicago. However, he later succumbed to his injuries.
During the plea and sentencing hearing, Cooper explained how he was first dating a woman who Gordon later dated – but still considered themselves friends even as the woman came between them. "He [Gordon] wanted me to stay away from his girlfriend, and I wanted him to stay away from mine," Cooper told the court.
Gordon and Cooper Got into a Verbal Dispute at a Bar in the Moments Leading Up to the Stabbing
On the night of Feb. 13, Gordon and Cooper got into a verbal dispute at a bar, a detective previously testified at a preliminary hearing. Gordon, for his part, left with the woman, and the pair planned on going to a friend's house to play cards and dice. But on the way there, they passed by Cooper's house – and another argument ensued.
The couple left, but Cooper followed, and the two friends confronted one another in the driveway of the Rock Falls house where the disagreements, humiliations and jealousies finally turned violent.
Cooper: 'My Purpose was to Confront'
"I hated it," Cooper said. "My purpose was to confront."
Prosecutors said, as Cooper exited a vehicle, the woman saw something shiny in his hand and worried he was going to use a knife to vandalize her own vehicle.
Shortly after, Cooper shoved the woman, Gordon intervened to try and protect her, and Cooper was soon on his back and stabbing him repeatedly. The defendant quickly left the scene but was arrested later that same night.
"I want that decision back," Cooper said on Thursday.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, Cooper received the maximum sentence of 20 years, with one year on supervised release. He was granted 97 days of credit for time spent in pre-trial detention.

Oscar Pistorius competes in triathlon 12 years after murdering girlfriend

South African former Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius competes in a triathlon event, 12 years after murdering his girlfriend and a year after his release on parole, in the coastal city of Durban, South Africa, June 1, 2025. REUTERS/Michael Fragoeiro South African former Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius competes in a triathlon event, 12 years after murdering his girlfriend and a year after his release on parole, in the coastal city of Durban, South Africa, June 1, 2025. REUTERS/Michael Fragoeiro JOHANNESBURG - South African former Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius was spotted competing in a triathlon last weekend in the coastal city of Durban, 12 years after murdering his girlfriend and a year after his release on parole. Afrikaans-language news website Netwerk24 on Wednesday reported Pistorius' participation in the Ironman 70.3 competition. Netwerk24 cited an unnamed source as saying that Pistorius had permission from his parole officer to compete. Conrad Dormehl, an attorney for Pistorius, confirmed to Reuters that Pistorius had participated in the Durban race. Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson of South Africa's Department of Correctional Services, said he did not know whether Pistorius had received permission to compete, but would find out and respond to questions sent by Reuters. He said his parole officer would have needed to approve him travelling from where he lives to another district. Pistorius - dubbed "Blade Runner" for his carbon-fibre prosthetic legs - shot dead 29-year-old model Reeva Steenkamp through a locked bathroom door on Valentine's Day in 2013, in a crime that drew worldwide attention and shocked a nation inured to violence against women. He repeatedly said he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder and launched multiple appeals against his conviction on that basis. Pistorius, now 38, was freed from jail in January 2024 after completing more than half his sentence and is on parole until his sentence expires in 2029. Netwerk24 published a photograph of Pistorius riding a bicycle with the race number 105. Pistorius' distinctive tattoo and prosthetic legs were visible in the photograph. Reuters contacted the photographer who gave the news agency permission to publish images similar to the one Netwerk24 used. Results published online by sports-timing company SportSplits show an athlete called Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius competed in the triathlon under race number 105, coming 555th among all participants and third in the "physically challenged" category. The race involved a 2-km swim, a 90-km bike ride and a 21-km run - a total distance of 70.3 miles. Pistorius was once the darling of the sports world, and a pioneering voice for disabled athletes, for whom he campaigned to be allowed to compete with able-bodied participants at major sports events. He won six gold medals over three Paralympic Games in Athens, Beijing and London, and competed in able-bodied races at the London 2012 Olympics. Who Is Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja? Neighbor Who Shoot Dead 'King of the Hill' Voice Actor Jonathan Joss After Heated Argument Arrested

The man who allegedly shot and killed "King of the Hill" voice actor Jonathan Joss has been arrested, according to a report. The suspect, Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, was arrested in Texas on Sunday, June 1, at 7:05 p.m, according to online records, the New York Post reported. He faces a charge of first-degree felony murder, with his bond set at $200,000. Joss, best known for voicing a character on the popular animated series "King of the Hill", was reportedly shot dead by a neighbor in Texas. Joss, who voiced "John Redcorn" on the animated series, got into a heated argument with Ceja at his San Antonio home on Sunday night. Argument Leading to Death During the altercation, Ceja drew a gun and shot Joss multiple times. Ceja fled the scene by car but was arrested by authorities just one block away. As authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the deadly shooting, neighbors told TMZ that Joss and Ceja had a long-standing dispute and were reportedly involved in past verbal and physical altercations. According to Joss' neighbors, his house was destroyed in a fire back in February, which reportedly started when he tried to heat the home using a BBQ pit after his electricity was cut off. They said that on Sunday, Joss returned to the property to pick up a check from a victim's fire relief fund and found the remains of one of his cherished dogs that had died in the blaze, the New York Post reported. The sight of the dog's remains sent Joss into a fury, and he began shouting at anyone nearby, including Alvarez Ceja, who lived just two houses away, according to eyewitnesses, the publication reported. Neighbors said that such outbursts from Joss were common. They claimed that police had been called on him multiple times before his home caught fire earlier this year. They also alleged that Joss often engaged in strange behavior, such as banging pots and pans on his rooftop in the middle of the night. More Mystery into the Death Before the fire, Joss' home had reportedly been deemed unsafe and uninhabitable— a situation neighbors say led to his electricity being disconnected. According to the Post, a GoFundMe campaign was launched for Joss after the incident, successfully raising $10,721 to assist him. Details on the fundraising page revealed that the house was originally built in 1957 by Joss' father as a gift for his mother, and sadly, three of his dogs lost their lives in the fire. Joss, a graduate of Our Lady of the Lake University, is survived by his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, whom he married on Valentine's Day. His final credited role on IMDb was in 2023, lending his voice to characters in CD Projekt RED's video game "Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty", where he starred alongside Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba. Joss also voiced the character Healing in the animated drama "Unplugged" by Paul McComas and Holly Trasti, appearing with the late Louis Gossett Jr., the late Ed Asner, Christina Ricci, and Jeri Ryan.
