Police Detain Hundreds of Protesting Sanitation Workers in Chennai
Hundreds of sanitation workers have been protesting for over 13 days against the move to privatise their jobs. On Wednesday, 13 August, the Madras High Court asked the Tamil Nadu government to remove the protestors from outside the Greater Chennai Corporation headquarters.
Platoons of police personnel were deployed to clear protesters from the site, citing disturbance to public peace by occupying footpaths and causing traffic congestion.
The high court held that the sanitation workers were protesting in an unauthorised site. A tense situation prevailed outside the Chennai Corporation headquarters as protesters intensified over the police's attempt to drive out sanitation workers and their supporters, who have been protesting against the MK Stalin-led DMK government.
The court order
The high court had directed that occupying public footpaths without permission is not allowed, stating that it is creating a problem for the public, including traffic congestion, and ordered the state to clear the protest site.
The court has also instructed the police to act with restraint and clarified that the workers can continue their agitation at officially designated protest venues after obtaining due permission.
Despite the court's order, sanitation workers continued to occupy the site, insisting that the government should respond to their justified demands.
Although the court had given them time until Wednesday evening to vacate, the agitating sanitation workers continued to sit in protest at the site. Their defiance led to police intervention and the forceful removal of nearly 800 sanitation workers and their supporters.
The workers have been protesting against the Greater Chennai Corporation's (GCC) decision to privatise garbage collection in Zones V and VI since 1 August 2025
The privatisation plan, valued at Rs 2,500 crore, has led to significant concerns among the workers. They allege that the move has resulted in reduced wages, from Rs 23,000 to as low as Rs 15,000 and diminished benefits.
Additionally, there are claims of increased workloads and a lack of safety equipment. The workers, who have been employed by the GCC for over 15 years, express frustration over the sudden policy change and the perceived erosion of their job security. The protest has also led to a pile-up of waste in Chennai, causing inconvenience to residents across the city.

ED searches DMK minister Periyasamy's residences
CHENNAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided the houses, business premises and even the MLA hostel rooms of the state rural development minister I Periyasamy and his family members, including his son, IP Senthilkumar MLA, in Chennai and Dindigul, their hometown. Sources said authorities locked the minister's cabin in the Secretariat in anticipation that ED teams might land there too, but ED sleuths stopped with the residence and the MLA hostel. Simultaneous searches happened in three places in Dindigul: the minister's residence in Durairaj Nagar, Senthilkumar's residence at Vallalar Nagar, and the minister's daughter Indra's residence at Seelapadi. After the information about the raids spread, DMK cadres gathered in front of the houses in large numbers. While the CRPF personnel guarded the premises, state police personnel were deployed in the localities concerned to maintain the law and order situation. 'The central govt is using the Income Tax and Enforcement Departments to intimidate its opponents and stifle the voice. That is why the raid is being carried out at the house of Periyasamy. This is strongly condemnable,' he said. It may be noted that the Madras high court had recently reversed the order of the Dindigul trial court, which relieved the DMK leader and his family members in the Rs 2 crore disproportionate assets case. The case pertains to the accumulation of assets to the tune of Rs 2 crore between 2006 and 2010 when Periyasamy was the housing minister. While DVAC filed a chargesheet against Periyasamy, his wife Suseela, and sons Senthilkumar and Prabhu, the ED also registered a money-laundering case based on the DVAC FIR and interrogated Periyasamy in 2022. However, the Dindigul trial court acquitted all of them from the case. But the Madras high court set aside the trial court order in April and ordered a fresh trial.

CM announces police recruitment board, vows to end Naxalism by 2026
Bhopal: CM Mohan Yadav on Friday announced the formation of the Madhya Pradesh Police Recruitment Board to speed up hiring and make the process more transparent. At present, such recruitments are carried out through the Staff Selection Board, Bhopal, that he said often takes longer than needed. Speaking at the state-level Independence Day medal distribution ceremony here, Yadav said the board would take charge of all recruitments from 2026. For this year, the Staff Selection Board will conduct the process. The CM said 7,500 vacancies had been cleared this year and a total of 22,500 posts would be filled in three years, with 7,500 appointments annually. He reaffirmed his govt's commitment to make the state free from Naxalism by March next year, under the guidance of PM Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah.
