ABS travel data shows fall in Aussie visits to US
Overseas arrivals and departures data shows the US fell from third to fourth most popular travel destination across 2024-25.
Travel to the vast and vibrant North American democracy was now 25 per cent lower from 10 years ago, the ABS said.
China, meanwhile, rose two spots to fifth place, even as the government recommends travellers exercise a 'high degree of caution' when visiting the Communist country.
More restrictive US trade and entry policies, introduced following US President Donald Trump's victory in November last year, could be dampening Australia's traditional American wanderlust.
In a trading update from July, travel booking company Flight Centre warned of an 'ongoing global downturn in bookings to the US' and said Australian holiday-makers were searching for destinations closer to home.
'This volatility temporarily disrupted traditional travel and booking patterns during Flight Centre's peak trading period as some customers either booked closer-to-home overseas holidays (in Australia, examples include China, Japan, Fiji and New Zealand) or delayed finalising travel plans,' the company said.
The $2.8bn company delivered a reduced profit forecast as a result of the disruption in traditional travel patterns.
Though travel to the US declined, Indonesia held steady as Australia's most popular travel destination.
The northern neighbour, which boasts the tourism crown jewel of Bali, accounted for 14 per cent of Australian overseas trips across the year.
Some 87 per cent of the 1,741,370 trips recorded to Indonesia were for holidays.
New Zealand came in second place, Japan third, the US fourth and China at No.5.
Trips to Japan have tripled compared with 2015, while trips to India have doubled.
For travel into Australia, New Zealanders took out top spot, accounting for 16.6 per cent of all visitors, or 1,391,140 visits.
The median duration of stay in Australia was 12 days, the same as 2023-24.

The big banks, which were mixed earlier in the day, all finished higher: Westpac gained 2.1 per cent, ANZ Bank rose 1.8 per cent, NAB added 0.8 per cent and even the Commonwealth Bank rose 0.6 per cent. Mining was another outperforming sector, finishing 1.1 per cent higher. Rio Tinto gained 1.4 per cent and Fortescue rose 1.3 per cent, while BHP lifted 1.1 per cent. Loading Energy stocks also rose (1.1 per cent). Santos added 1.8 per cent and Woodside added 0.2 per cent. Petrol and diesel supplier Ampol jumped 7.7 per cent after announcing a major expansion plan with the acquisition of British fuel giant EG Group's Australian petrol station network. If the $1.1 billion deal gains regulatory approval, Ampol, formerly known as Caltex Australia, would add EG's 500 fuel sites to its business, enabling it to fast-track the roll-out unstaffed, self-service petrol stations under its U-GO brand.

While Australian guests will usually complete the full 15-day European Gems itinerary along the Rhine-Main-Danube route, European-based travellers are more likely to choose to sail for one week. This leaves a handful of free cabins for a colleague and I to join the fun. The company has four ships sailing Europe's most popular course, and Capella's cruise director Hedleigh Emberson knows the itinerary well. He's been sailing this circuit for years, and rallies the troops each day for shore excursions with good humour and infectious energy. The itinerary While Capella's 15-day itinerary traverses the Netherlands, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, I'm only on board for four nights, covering Melk and Vienna in Austria, Bratislava in Slovakia, and Budapest in Hungary. It's a hit a minute – each day we arrive at a fascinating European city, and the diverse experiences make it clear why many travellers repeat this route. In Melk, we explore its Baroque hilltop abbey, and enjoy the cobblestone streets lined with local distillers. By afternoon, we've reached the idyllic village of Dürnstein. The region is known for its grüner veltliner and we settle in for the afternoon at a quirky bar tucked into the city's medieval gate. A full day spent in opulent Vienna passes quickly, touring manicured parks, historical Habsburg palaces and monuments (including many devoted to the Empress Sisi), shopping, and sampling ale and schnitzel at the popular Reinthaler's Beisl. Bratislava in Slovakia is immaculate and affordable, with its historic Old Town a stone's throw from the ship. Our last stop is the highlight, with two days in Budapest, where the finale is a jovial dinner and an evening cruise along the Danube with the magnificent Budapest landmarks alight. The cabins There are 89 cabins catering to a maximum of 178 passengers and 44 crew, and three categories of rooms. Entry level starts at a Window Stateroom up to a French-style Balcony Suite (with floor-to-ceiling windows, which open), and an Owner's Suite, which I was lucky to score. It was very spacious, with a generous seating area, bathroom with double sinks and plenty of storage, desk and large TV facing the bed. All of the rooms are modern and well furnished. There are bicycles to borrow and I was pleased to find a gym on board, not that I used it after walking so much while exploring different cities each day. 'You'll find me on the mezzanine,' he winks at me, gesturing to his desk upstairs with a cheeky nod to Kath and Kim (who mispronounce it as mezza-noyne). What's not Dark wood panelling within the interiors is polished and cosy but can make spaces feel dark if the weather is overcast.
