Fears entire town could be washed away

Perth Now20-07-2025
An entire Aussie town is at risk of being completely washed away by aggressive coastal erosion, which has stripped more than 25m of land over the past year and put homes and lives at risk.
The scenic coastal town of Lancelin is in crisis, with locals saying more than 10m of land has vanished since May due to the erosion process.
In some of the worst-hit parts of the coastline, more than 25 metres have been lost over the past year.
The once-popular fishing and holiday destination, located 125km north of Perth, is now fighting to hold onto what remains of its beachfront.
Glen Trebilcock, owner of the Lancelin Sands Hotel, has launched a petition calling on the Western Australian Government to provide immediate emergency funding and technical support.
'Without immediate intervention, the safety of the foreshore and the integrity of essential coastal infrastructure remain at serious risk,' he said.
'We strongly believe that a retreat is not a viable solution.' Locals say the coastline of Lancelin, north of Perth, is at risk of disappearing. 7News Credit: Supplied Lancelin Sands Hotel owner Glen Trevilcock is worried about the coastal erosion impacting his hotel. 7News Credit: Supplied
The petition, signed by more than 900 people, was submitted to the WA Legislative Council.
'The Shire of Gingin, as a small regional local government, has a limited rate base and lacks the technical capacity and financial resources required to effectively manage and mitigate the impacts of this erosion,' the petition said.
'We therefore ask the Legislative Council to urge the State Government to support the Shire of Gingin and community of Lancelin with emergency funding and specialist technical assistance in response to this urgent and unforeseen environmental challenge.'
Shire of Gingin President Linda Balcombe has also appealed directly to WA Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti, though she says the shire has yet to receive a response.
'We're not asking for millions of dollars at the moment, we're just asking for a little bit of financial assistance,' Ms Balcombe told 7News.
'We're a very small shire with only about 6000 ratepayers and we've got a big coastline that we have to protect.' Locals are pushing for the state government to assist. 7News Credit: Supplied
Tourism, a key part of the local economy, is also suffering.
Mr Trebilcock told 7News six tour groups that once passed through daily have now stopped coming altogether.
A popular seaside lookout near his hotel is also scheduled for demolition next week due to safety concerns.
The WA Government told 7NEWS it is 'aware of the issues and is actively looking at options to assist'.

‘I thought it was a scam': Broadbeach man finally realises he's $15 million richer after Oz Lotto win

A man finally realised he was sitting on a winning $15 million lotto ticket after ignoring multiple calls from officials trying to deliver the life-changing news. The Gold Coast local held one of two division one winning entries in Oz Lotto draw 1642 on Tuesday. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Each ticket scored a jaw-dropping $15 million win. But as The Lott's Matt Hart revealed live on Sunrise, the man didn't exactly roll out the red carpet for the good news. 'I did have a very, very brief phone call of conversation with this winner,' Hart said. 'He didn't believe me, not for a second. I may as well have been a Nigerian prince. 'It was a very brief conversation ... he basically said, 'Yeah, nah', and hung up.' Turns out, the winner had good reason to be cautious as scam calls are a daily nuisance. Eventually, the Broadbeach man's curiosity got the better of him. He checked his numbers, and his dream of winning the lottery finally came true. 'This is the best news I've had in many a year,' the man said on Tuesday. 'I was sceptical when you first called. I wasn't too convinced. 'But then I checked my ticket ... I've been playing a long time, but never thought it would happen to me. I'm glad I persisted.' 'Something for the kids and grandkids' When asked how he planned to spend the windfall, the winner said he was going take time to let the enormity of the news sink in. 'We'll definitely do something for the kids and grandkids. But for now, I just need a moment to process it all.' It's a sentiment echoed by many lotto winners. Meanwhile, Julia Clare, owner of the Broadbeach chemist that sold the golden ticket, said she was thrilled to play a part in someone's life-changing moment. 'Really happy to hear it is a local. It's really amazing,' she said. 'We sold a division one winning syndicate entry a few years ago in May 2023. 'It was a $1 million ticket and it went to five syndicate members. 'They always say good things come in threes ... ! 'On behalf of the entire team, we wish our newly made millionaire all the very best and thank you for supporting us.' Numbers making millionaires The winning numbers in Oz Lotto draw 1642 were: 11, 32, 40, 42, 38, 29 and 34. The supplementary numbers were 15, 3 and 47. There were two division one winners nationwide: one in Queensland, and one in Victoria, where a Horsham grandfather also pocketed $15 million and told The Lott he was 'sweating like anything' when he heard the news on Tuesday night. 'He wants to buy a caravan and do a lap of Australia,' Hart shared on Sunrise. 'He was racing to get off the phone to tell his wife, so they probably didn't sleep much last night.'
