1 B.C. man in critical condition, 5 dead after collision near Falmouth, Nova Scotia, police say
Nova Scotia RCMP say five people have died after a two-vehicle crash near Falmouth, N.S.
Police say it's believed a Honda Civic and Nissan Sentra were travelling in the eastbound lane on Highway 101 between Falmouth and Hantsport, N.S., about 70 kilometres northwest of Halifax, when they collided Saturday around 11 p.m.
The driver and passenger of the Civic, a 43-year-old man and 45-year-old woman from Falmouth, were both pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say the driver of the Sentra, a 45-year-old woman from Oxford, N.S., and a 58-year-old male passenger from Nappan, N.S., were also declared dead at the crash site.
Mounties say two other passengers, a 50-year-old man and a 29-year-old man, were taken to hospital, and the 50-year-old from Oxford was later pronounced dead.
The 29-year-old man, who is from British Columbia, was flown to hospital by helicopter and remains in critical condition.
Abraham Zebian, the mayor of West Hants Regional Municipality, said he found out about the accident after hearing sirens.
He said losing so many people in a collision is a tragedy.
"We've lost two people from our community, that were part of our community, and others from the province as well," said Zebian. "It's tragic. You never want to see anything like that happen."
Police say the crash remains under investigation.

1 presumed dead, another missing following separate incidents at B.C. bodies of water
One person is presumed drowned and another is unaccounted for following two separate incidents involving bodies of water in southwest B.C. last weekend. Police in West Vancouver say a 29-year-old man is believed to have died after going missing while swimming across a lake in Cypress Provincial Park. They say B.C. Emergency Health Services and North Shore Rescue reported the man missing to the department around 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Police say the man, who was from Burnaby, was swimming across Cabin Lake with his fiancée when he "began to struggle." They say several witnesses saw the man in distress and his companion trying to help him before the man slipped beneath the surface and disappeared. A news release from the department says North Shore Rescue and West Vancouver Fire Service conducted an initial search in the water Sunday night, but were forced to suspend it as it got dark. It says another underwater search will be conducted, but police confirmed the man's family has been notified and the investigation will be turned over to the B.C. Coroners Service once the body has been recovered from the lake. Squamish crash leaves 1 unaccounted for Another person is unaccounted for after a vehicle with four occupants went into the Squamish River around 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning. A release from Squamish RCMP says three individuals were able to make it to safety, but one person is not believed to have made it out of the vehicle. Police say aerial and ground searches have not been able to locate the vehicle. Media relations officer Const. Kelly Wu says recovery efforts were paused due to current elevated water levels resulting from spring runoff. She says they will reassess recovery efforts as water levels begins to recede and visibility improves. "We do want to acknowledge that it's a very difficult time for the family and we're going to do everything we can to continue to monitor and reassess the conditions to determine when it's safe to proceed with the recovery," she said.

Multiple incidents at Steinbach summer festival keep RCMP busy

RCMP said 35 people were charged with multiple offences, ranging from dangerous driving, speeding, and possession of a weapon during the Summer in the City festival weekend. On Monday, Mounties highlighted several events through the weekend that prompted a response. One incident took place Friday night at the fairgrounds, where a group of men were seen fighting, and witnesses said one man pulled a knife during the fight. A 20-year-old man from Steinbach was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. On Saturday, RCMP arrested a 19-year-old man on a charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle following an incident where a car hit a barricade and a pedestrian at a Main Street business. The injured pedestrian, a 21-year-old man, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and later released from the hospital. On Sunday, officers went to the hospital, where they learned a 54-year-old man was injured in an assault. RCMP said the man was walking on Main Street and was assaulted with a baton and shot at with a BB gun. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. RCMP also arrested three people following break-ins at two businesses on Keating Road and Reimer Avenue.
