Messi brace powers Miami past Red Bulls

Arab Times20-07-2025
NEW YORK, July 20 (Xinhua): Lionel Messi scored two goals and set up another as Inter Miami recovered from a goal down to crush New York Red Bulls 5-1 in the MLS.
German defender Alexander Hack gave the hosts the lead by volleying home from Emil Forsberg's corner at the near post.
Messi then sent a sublime through ball into the path of his former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba, who took a touch before rifling a shot into the far corner.
Alba turned provider three minutes later as his cut-back allowed Telasco Segovia to fire in a first-time effort from eight yards.
Inter Miami was suddenly in overdrive, and Venezuelan midfielder Segovia made it 3-1 just before halftime as he pounced on a loose ball to slot home from distance.
Messi extended his side's lead by running onto Sergio Busquets' defense-splitting pass from deep inside his half and rounding goalkeeper Carlos Coronel before rolling the ball into an unguarded net.
The Florida outfit completed the rout in the 75th minute when Messi chested down Luis Suarez's cross and smashed his shot into the top-left corner.
Messi has now scored at least twice in six of his past seven matches. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner now has 18 goals and seven assists in 18 MLS outings this year.
Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano heaped praise on Messi after the match, saying the Argentine proved yet again why he is one of the greatest players in history.
"Ultimately, I think any sports fan, not just football fans, admires these types of athletes, whether it's Lionel Messi, Michael Jordan in his time, Rafa Nadal," Mascherano told a post-match news conference.
"These are people who have transcended sports, and the reality is that those of us who have the opportunity to experience this up close are very privileged."
The result leaves Inter Miami fifth in the Eastern Conference with 41 points, seven points behind leaders Cincinnati, but with three games in hand. The New York Red Bulls are ninth, eight points further back.

Messi has a 'minor' muscle injury

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Aug 4, (AP): Inter Miami star Lionel Messi is dealing with a minor muscle injury in his right leg after being hurt in the opening minutes of Saturday's Leagues Cup match against Necaxa, the club said Sunday. Messi underwent tests on his right leg after experiencing discomfort following a play in which he fell while being challenged by a pair of Necaxa defenders, in a game Inter Miami won on penalty kicks. His timeline for return isn't yet known, though it seems unlikely that he will be available for Miami's next Leagues Cup match against UNAM Pumas . Inter Miami said in a release that Messi's medical clearance will depend on how he responds to treatment. Messi slapped his hand against the ground in frustration after the fall, which happened in the first 10 minutes of Saturday's match. He walked slowly toward the Inter Miami bench before sitting down on the pitch. Trainers came out and worked on his right upper thigh area for a couple of minutes before he subbed out for Federico Redondo in the 11th. He then immediately walked to the locker room. Miami coach Javier Mascherano said after the game that Messi wasn't in any pain.

Saudi Arabia aims for a deep run in FIBA Asia Cup on home soil; China looks to bounce back

BEIJING, Aug 4 (Xinhua): With new faces in the lineup, China's men's basketball team hopes to rebound from recent below-par performances in international competitions at the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup. The most decorated team in the tournament's history, with 16 titles, most recently in 2015 on home soil, China has fallen short in the past two editions, exiting at the quarterfinal stage both times. Drawn in Group C, China will face host Saudi Arabia, India, and Jordan - the group's main threat. The meeting with Jordan recalls the 2011 Asia Cup final, when China edged the visitors 70-69 at home."The rematch is a long time coming, but the memory still stings," read a preview on the FIBA website. Saudi Arabia will look to its home-court advantage to spring an upset. Under the format, the top team in each group advances directly to the quarterfinals, while the second- and third-placed teams play for the remaining spots. Given the group dynamics, China will target the Jordan match to secure first place and a better knockout position. That could set up a potential quarterfinal against Lebanon, which eliminated China at the same stage in 2022. Adding to the struggles were 24th- and 29th-place finishes out of 32 teams at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2019 and 2023, respectively, along with missing the past two Olympic Games. After what appeared to be a low point, the team is aiming for redemption at the continental tournament in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from Aug. 5 to 17. Under head coach Guo Shiqiang, appointed in July last year, China has embarked on a rebuilding phase with its sights set on the 2027 World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. In the 14-man roster for Jeddah, newcomer Wang Junjie, who plays for the University of San Francisco in NCAA Division I, has drawn attention for his athleticism and explosiveness. Selected for the training camp in April, Wang earned his spot with strong warm-up performances. The 20-year-old forward averaged 8.3 points and 2.5 rebounds as China won twice each against Venezuela and Bosnia and Herzegovina ahead of its departure. Speaking about his international debut, Wang said, "I felt nervous before the game, and even almost burst into tears when singing the national anthem. Fortunately, I turned my nervousness into motivation." With Zeng Fanbo still recovering from injury, Wang is seen as a boost on the forward line. The Chinese Basketball Association has allowed Yang Hansen, drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2025, to skip the Asia Cup to focus on his development. Zhou Qi also withdrew due to a recurring waist injury. That leaves China's inside game to rely heavily on Hu Jinqiu, MVP of the 2024-25 CBA regular season. Bound for his second Asia Cup after debuting in 2017, Hu helped lead the Zhejiang Lions to their first CBA championship last season. He averaged a team-high 11.5 points in four recent warm-up games. "He'd be taking on an even more significant duty, manning the fort for the continental contest's most successful team," read an article about Hu on the FIBA website. "There should be no doubt that he's more than ready to do so." Hu will partner with Yu Jiahao, who recently signed with Spanish club Bilbao Basket and will join them after the Asia Cup. At 7-foot-3, Yu is the tallest player on the squad and led China with 6.3 rebounds per game in warm-ups. Veteran guards Hu Mingxuan and Zhao Rui will lead the backcourt, with Liao Sanning and Cheng Shuaipeng expected to contribute. With no dominant edge in the paint, rebounding and 3-point shooting will be key to China's chances. Looking ahead, Guo said, "We will go all out in every game for the best result as we can."Two-time defending champion Australia remains the favorite in Jeddah. Ranked seventh in the world, the Boomers boast balance, experience, and size, and top the tournament's power rankings. Japan's fast-paced game and New Zealand's toughness also make them strong medal contenders.

Messi exits with injury in Miami's Leagues Cup win

FLORIDA: Lionel Messi #10 of Inter Miami CF is tackled during the Leagues Cup Phase One match between Inter Miami CF and Club Necaxa at Chase Stadium on August 2, 2025.- AFP MIAMI: Lionel Messi suffered an injury and was removed in the 11th minute of Inter Miami's Leagues Cup penalty kicks victory over Mexico's Necaxa on Saturday at Fort Lauderdale's Chase Stadium. The 38-year-old Argentine superstar forward appeared to be having treatment on his upper right leg or groin before making his exit under his own power and walking to the locker room. But after a 5-4 triumph in penalties after a 2-2 draw, Miami coach Javier Mascherano said it would be Sunday before exact details of the injury and the severity of the setback would be known. 'Well, he felt a discomfort, and we will not be able to know until tomorrow how severe the injury is,' Mascherano said after the match. 'There's probably something there. Maybe not as important, because he was really not in pain. But he did feel a pull.' Messi took the ball and dribbled into the Necaxa back line, but he stumbled at the top of the box and ran into Necaxa defender Alexis Pena then tumbled to the ground, pounding the pitch in frustration as the ball was cleared away. Moments later, Herons captain Messi was alone near midfield on the left wing by himself when he went to the ground in a seated position, lying on his back briefly until trainers arrived. Mascherano elected to send in Federico Redondo to replace Messi. Inter Miami won 5-4 on penalties after the 10-man teams played to a 2-2 draw after full time. Argentine striker Tomas Badaloni was denied on the decisive penalty kick in the third round of the shootout while Rodrigo De Paul, Ben Cremaschi, Jordi Alba, Redondo and Luis Suarez hit penalties for Miami, Uruguayan striker Suarez getting the decider on the last kick. Inter Miami Venezuelan midfielder Telasco Segovia scored in the 12th minute, but Herons defender Maximiliano Falcon of Uruguay was shown a red card in the 17th minute. Badaloni netted the equalizer for Necaxa in the 33rd minute to lift the visitors level at half-time, and Necaxa was cut to 10 men as well when Cristian Calderon received a red card in the 60th minute. Ricardo Monreal, who came off the Necaxa bench in the 74th minute, scored in the 81st to put the Mexican side ahead only for Spain's Alba to net the equalizer for Miami in the second minute of stoppage time. During Argentine World Cup qualifiers in March, Messi was nagged by thigh strain issues. Messi has scored 18 goals and assisted on nine others in 18 MLS appearances this season. He assisted on both Inter Miami goals in a 2-1 victory over Atlas on Wednesday in their opener in the Leagues Cup, a tournament involving MLS and Mexican League squads.
