Messi brace powers Miami past Red Bulls

Arab Times4 days ago
NEW YORK, July 20 (Xinhua): Lionel Messi scored two goals and set up another as Inter Miami recovered from a goal down to crush New York Red Bulls 5-1 in the MLS.
German defender Alexander Hack gave the hosts the lead by volleying home from Emil Forsberg's corner at the near post.
Messi then sent a sublime through ball into the path of his former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba, who took a touch before rifling a shot into the far corner.
Alba turned provider three minutes later as his cut-back allowed Telasco Segovia to fire in a first-time effort from eight yards.
Inter Miami was suddenly in overdrive, and Venezuelan midfielder Segovia made it 3-1 just before halftime as he pounced on a loose ball to slot home from distance.
Messi extended his side's lead by running onto Sergio Busquets' defense-splitting pass from deep inside his half and rounding goalkeeper Carlos Coronel before rolling the ball into an unguarded net.
The Florida outfit completed the rout in the 75th minute when Messi chested down Luis Suarez's cross and smashed his shot into the top-left corner.
Messi has now scored at least twice in six of his past seven matches. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner now has 18 goals and seven assists in 18 MLS outings this year.
Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano heaped praise on Messi after the match, saying the Argentine proved yet again why he is one of the greatest players in history.
"Ultimately, I think any sports fan, not just football fans, admires these types of athletes, whether it's Lionel Messi, Michael Jordan in his time, Rafa Nadal," Mascherano told a post-match news conference.
"These are people who have transcended sports, and the reality is that those of us who have the opportunity to experience this up close are very privileged."
The result leaves Inter Miami fifth in the Eastern Conference with 41 points, seven points behind leaders Cincinnati, but with three games in hand. The New York Red Bulls are ninth, eight points further back.

Bonmati back to her decisive best for Spain

ZURICH: 'You could write a book about this,' said Aitana Bonmati on Wednesday as she reflected on the last few weeks in her life after scoring the goal which took Spain into the final of the Women's Euro 2025. At the end of June the world's leading women's footballer was lying in hospital with viral meningitis and it looked like she might not be able to play for Spain at the tournament in Switzerland. Now she is preparing to lead her team into Sunday's final against England in Basel, in a rematch of the 2023 World Cup decider which Spain won, after converting the only goal of the last-four clash with Germany late in extra time. 'When the ball went in I started running around like a crazy person. I didn't know where to go,' a smiling Bonmati said as she spoke to media at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich after collecting the trophy for player of the match. 'It is so special to score in games like these and if I can help the team to keep making history that is very special indeed.' Barcelona midfielder Bonmati, who has won the Ballon d'Or in each of the last two years, was taken into hospital at the end of June after reporting feeling unwell. Tests confirmed that she was suffering from a bout of viral meningitis and Bonmati could only watch from bed as her teammates beat Japan in a friendly. Viral meningitis is less serious than the rarer bacterial variant, which can lead to death within 24 hours, but it still seemed like a long shot for her to recover in time for the Euros. Yet she did recover, and appeared as a late substitute in Spain's opening game at the tournament, a 5-0 win over Portugal in Bern on July 3. The 27-year-old was back in the starting line-up for their final group match, a 3-1 victory over Italy, and retained her place for the quarter-final against the host nation before scoring the winner against Germany. 'I don't believe in destiny, just in hard work and in my own mentality. I can only thank everyone who has supported me because it has not been easy,' Bonmati admitted. 'She didn't have an easy start to the Euros but she has managed to overcome her health problems and has worked hard to get fit again,' remarked coach Montse Tome. Spain are now into their first ever senior women's European Championship final, two years after winning the World Cup for the first time. Bonmati was one of the stars of that superb team which defeated England in Sydney, and is now dreaming of another title. La Roja are the favorites, even if England are the defending continental champions, for the latest installment in a growing rivalry between the nations. As well as the 2023 Women's World Cup final, Spain beat England in the final of the men's Euros last year in Berlin. In late May an Arsenal side featuring several members of Sarina Wiegman's current England squad defeated Barcelona in the final of the Women's Champions League. Seven of the players who started for Barcelona that day in Lisbon also started against Germany on Wednesday, among them goalkeeper Cata Coll who made several vital saves before Bonmati got the winner. 'Cata played really well, with some big saves when we were suffering,' Bonmati said of Coll, who missed all of Spain's three group games due to tonsilitis. 'Neither of us had the start we wanted at this Euros due to illness but we are lucky to be here today. 'It shows what can happen in life. In the end we have had good news.' — AFP

Spain reach Euro 2025 final after 1-0 extra-time win over Germany

Bonmati strikes a superb extra-time winner • Spain face England in title decider ZURICH: Aitana Bonmati netted the only goal of the game late in extra time as world champions Spain edged Germany 1-0 in their Women's Euro 2025 semi-final on Wednesday to set up a title decider this weekend against England. A tense game in Zurich was ticking down towards penalties when reigning Ballon d'Or Bonmati struck in the 113th minute, surprising the usually reliable German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger at her near post. It was not one of Barcelona star Bonmati's most influential performances, yet she still delivered when it mattered to keep Spain on course to win their first European Championship crown. 'We knew that the goalkeeper often leaves her near post open in these situations, so I didn't think twice. I didn't want the game to go to penalties,' said a beaming Bonmati. Spain were also grateful to goalkeeper Cata Coll for some vital interventions, including a spectacular double save to deny Klara Buehl and Carlotta Wamser right at the end of normal time, as Germany were agonizingly eliminated. The Spaniards will now face reigning European champions England on Sunday in Basel in what will be a repeat of the 2023 World Cup decider, when La Roja triumphed 1-0 in Sydney. If Montse Tome's side come out on top again, they will become the first nation to hold both the world and European titles at the same time since Germany almost 15 years ago. Spain had never beaten Germany before, and now they advance to their first ever Euro final, with the chance to cement their status as the leading force in international women's football. 'We have made history again today, getting to a first Euro final and beating Germany for the first time,' said Bonmati. 'We are proud to be part of this generation of players, but this is not over yet. We can enjoy this and then tomorrow we need to start thinking about England.' Germany, meanwhile, had been hoping to avenge their defeat by England in the last Euro final in 2022, but they will not add to their record tally of eight European Championship victories. 'She doesn't have to take responsibility. She made so many wonderful saves to get us where we are,' Germany coach Christian Wueck said of goalkeeper Berger. 'There is no blame, we are very proud of the team.' Spain should have been the fresher of the two sides, having played their quarter-final against hosts Switzerland a day before Germany got the better of France on penalties after playing almost the whole game with 10 players. Tale of two goalkeepers Germany were also missing three starters from that match, with Kathrin Hendrich and Sjoeke Nuesken suspended while right-back Sarai Linder was injured. Wueck's team did unsurprisingly have the majority of the 22,432 crowd behind them at Zurich's Letzigrund Stadium, and they also had Berger in goal. A star of the win over France, she made a fine save to keep out a shot from Spain's Esther Gonzalez—her teammate at Gotham FC in the United States—just before the midway point in the first half, tipping the ball over for a corner. Spain captain Irene Paredes headed against the post from a Claudia Pina corner and Gonzalez was again denied by Berger before half-time. It was then Germany's turn to have the best chances in the second half, but Coll made a crucial block from Buehl just after the hour mark, and the Bayern Munich star also curled a free-kick just wide late on. Then came the stunning double save from Coll right at the end of the allotted four minutes of injury time, as the Barcelona goalkeeper kept out a deflected Buehl shot that was looping in and quickly got up to stop Wamser's follow-up. That was a sign that it would not be Germany's night, and they then saw defender Sophia Kleinherne come off in tears early in extra time after overstretching while trying to stop Salma Paralluelo going clean through on goal. Spain's winner eventually came, as Bonmati let a ball from Athenea del Castillo run past her in the area before beating Berger with a shot from a tight angle. There was still time for Coll to excel again, flying to her left to save from Lea Schueller as Spain held on. — AFP

England have created their own luck at Euro 2025: Walsh

GENEVA: Italy's forward #10 Cristiana Girelli (right) heads the ball in front of England's midfielder #04 Keira Walsh during the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 semi-final football match in Geneva, on July 22, 2025. -- AFP ZURICH: England midfielder Keira Walsh disagrees with fan chatter that her team have been lucky at the European championships, arguing that the reigning champions have created their own fortune, largely through sheer stubborn belief. Late goals by 19-year-old Michelle Agyemang saved England at the brink in both their quarter-final against Sweden and semi against Italy to set up Sunday's Euro 2025 decider against world champions Spain. 'Maybe it looks like chaos but for us it doesn't feel like that,' Walsh said at England's training base on Thursday. 'I've heard that people have been saying that it was luck. But you create those moments yourself, through belief, determination, confidence. 'I think it's not by luck that Michelle's in the box and scoring. It is not luck that people are putting crosses into the box. It's thought out, it's purposeful. 'And I think it's the absolute belief that no matter what minute of the game it is, we're going to win or we're going to get a result that we need to take us to extra time. I think that's kind of the resilience of this team as well.' The referee was starting to glance at her watch when Agyemang struck in the 96th minute against Italy on Tuesday to send the game to extra time where Chloe Kelly smashed home the rebound of her own penalty shot. 'Maybe the way we've done it is a little bit more stressful for everyone,' Walsh said from England's training base on Thursday. 'But that's kind of the beauty of this team, that we are relentless, and we've got belief in ourselves, that even in the 90th minute we can get a goal and we can win.' Sunday marks England's third consecutive major tournament final and a chance for revenge against the team that beat them in the 2023 World Cup final. That will not be a focus when they take the pitch in Basel though, Walsh said. 'Obviously that was a massive disappointment, but I think as a football player you can be too emotional,' said the Chelsea midfielder. 'Just focus on the positives and not draw on that too much. You think about it a little bit but put it to the side and focus on Sunday.' The team watched Spain's 1-0 win over Germany in extra time together in their hotel players' lounge on Wednesday night, and like anyone who saw the game marvelled at twice-reigning Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati's brilliant goal from a tight angle. '(It was) Bonmati magic,' Walsh said. 'Most players in that position wouldn't even think about shooting, they would automatically cross, it was a fantastic goal.' The team have received pleading messages not to let Sunday's final go to extra time, while midfielder Georgia Stanway's dad has said his nerves are shot. Walsh laughed and said never mind the families. — Reuters
