Godiva Festival 'a must' for The Specials' Neville Staple

BBC News06-07-2025
"I love being on stage and I had to do Coventry."Despite serious health concerns, there was no way The Specials' Neville Staple was going to miss playing the city's Godiva Festival.Staple, one of the founders of the legendary ska revivalists, has been told he can only play five gigs a year, after having to cancel several gigs and festival sets last year when he was diagnosed with a serious heart defect. His Godiva performance on Saturday saw him back in the city where The Specials first took to the stage after forming in 1977.
"I've missed being on stage so much," Staple told BBC CWR, explaining that after discussions with his wife and his doctor he accepted he had to cut back on gigs.Staple's wife and fellow musician Christine "Sugary" Staple knew his heart was immediately set on playing Godiva, where she also played in the band's line-up."He said I've got to do Coventry – out of the five [shows], Coventry is a must," she said.
The three-day Godiva festival, which showcases local acts as well as famous bands, will end later with a headline set from Ocean Colour Scene. The Specials were at the forefront of the 2 Tone movement that started in Coventry in the late 1970s, quickly gaining national acclaim. The genre blended Jamaican reggae, ska, and British punk music.Along with the likes of The Beat, The Selecter and Madness, the band captured the mood of the late 1970s, when future prospects for young people looked bleak. Now firmly fixed in Coventry's cultural heritage, 2 Tone continues to inspire successive generations, with tributes posted across the city when The Specials' frontman Terry Hall died in 2022.One of Hall's piano's has been on display at Godiva this year, alongside a stall from Tonic Music for Mental Health, a charity he supported.
"Sugary" Staple described the gig as "a homecoming" and added that "we love Godiva, we've got history at Godiva."The couple have also been involved with anti-knife crime campaigning in recent years, after their grandson Fidel Glasgow was fatally stabbed in Coventry in 2018.On Saturday, Staple's message to people in the city was: "Stay positive, love one another, and put away those knives."

Richarlison scores 'goal of the season' contender with stunning overhead kick against Burnley - as fans hail 'legendary moment' for Spurs star

Richarlison left fans speechless with a stunning overhead kick on the volley in Tottenham 's clash with Burnley on Saturday afternoon. Fans are already calling it a 'goal of the season' contender and believe it could be remembered as a 'legendary moment'. The Brazilian only scored four Premier League goals last season but has already bagged half that after his brace against the Clarets. Richarlison opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a half-volley but it is his effort on the hour mark which is taking all the plaudits. Mohammed Kudus knocked the ball past Quilindschy Hartman on the right flank before hanging a cross in the air and Richarlison sent it flying into the corner with his airborne smash from 12 yards out. 'Goal of the season already,' wrote one fan on X. 'Legendary moment,' said another. 'Kudus and Richarlison are going to cook this season,' one predicted. One fan, clearly harder to impress, doled out more moderate praise: 'Goal of the month'. Another felt the forward is in for a big year, writing: 'Richarlison about to rediscover himself.'

‘For crying out loud' fume shoppers as chocolate advent calendar ALREADY on shelves at UK supermarket

DESPITE the UK basking in glorious sunshine and with still plenty of time left of August, some shops are sneaking in early Christmas treats. Fed-up shoppers took to social media to name and shame one supermarket after noticing an Advent calendar on its shelves. The shop in the firing line is B&M, after a photo of the Guylian countdown treat was shared on New Foods UK's Facebook. "For crying out loud, it is only August! Some of us haven't had our summer holiday yet," one moaned, adding angry-face emojis. Another pointed out: "The way the chocolate is going in b&m during this heat, I would hate to think what it would be like in Dec!" "It's bloody August!" a third echoed. "Can't we just enjoy summer? We'll have months of this to come," argued a forth. But not everyone was annoyed by the bargain retailers forward thinking. One person tagged her husband and wrote: "Please do not pass by this in B&M without buying me one!!" Another tagged a friend and said: "Get looking early. I'd like one of these please." The £12 calendar is filled with three different flavours of the iconic Belgian chocolates. From December 1 to 24, behind each door is a milk truffle, original seashell, or salted caramel delight. And it's not just Advent calendars that the bargain store is flogging. Another picture of seasonal goodies was shared on Dansway Gifts and Bargains UK Facebook Group. "Festive Chocolate Selection Boxes are BACK at B&M," one shopper wrote. "A few we found whilst in store today, there's lots of other Christmas chocolate to choose from!" But one disappointed customer penned: "We've not even finished summer yet or had Halloween. "I swear Christmas gets earlier and earlier every year, makes you wonder how long these chocolates sit there before we buy and save for Christmas." Another added: "Too soon for Christmas but I'd still scoff them." While it may feel premature to start stocking up on Christmas treats, bargain hunters often bag better deals in the off-season. In fact, one expert has shared why now is the ideal time to buy your festive decorations, and where to buy them. 2 Why B&M is so good for bargains SENIOR Digital Writer, Abby Wilson, who loves a shopping trip to B&M, has shared her thoughts on why the chain is the place to go for bargain buys... WE all love B&M (especially me). It's a one-stop-shop where you can nab all things from gardenware and homeware, to snacks and cleaning supplies. Not only do we love the variety B&M offers (because after all, who can be bothered to go to five different shops anymore?!), but the prices are brilliant too. If you're on a budget, B&M is definitely worth vising - as it's full of cheap bargain buys. Not only will you find affordable items, but B&M is full of dupes too - so if you're after beauty buys without the designer price tag, you'll need to take a trip. Similar to this, the chain are eager to get on trends - so if you see something in H&M Home but are on a budget and can't justify the price, give it a few weeks and you'll probably spot something similar on the shelves in your local B&M.

The 30 greatest karaoke songs of all time

'Hold my pint, I'm going up!' mumbled my colleague, Adam, at a dreaded team bonding karaoke night back in the 1990s. The painfully shy IT student with whom I shared weekend shifts at the Covent Garden branch of a fashion chain store had barely spoken to other staff members over the previous year. When he buried his head in the karaoke bar's 'menu' of songs, I'd assumed he was just avoiding conversation. So I was shocked to see him clutching the mic and assuming a cocky stance and Cockney accent to launch into a barnstorming version of Blur 's 1994 spoken-word hit Parklife. Such transformations make the best karaoke moments. Sure, it's always nice to see an angel-voiced extrovert nail every glass-shattering note of a Mariah Carey ballad and harmonise perfectly through retro boy-band classics. But the most memorable nights open new windows into the souls of people you thought you knew. Great Aunt Doris casting aside her cardigan and swinging her hips to the brass of Big Spender; Gary from the rugby club closing his eyes for the duration of an achingly fragile rendition of Somewhere over the Rainbow or the head of the PTA headbanging her way through Rage Against the Machine's expletive-laden Killing in the Name. For these reasons, it is perhaps never quite possible for a stranger to identify the perfect song for a karaoke night, even if that stranger is someone who has been writing about music for the Telegraph, as I have, for decades. But that's not going to stop me from having a go. Take the below list as your starting point – and let me know what I've missed in the comments. Skip to: Party starters Diva flexes Dads' delights Showtunes Last orders Party starters I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor (1978) As country star Billie Jo Spears discovered when covering this disco classic in 1979, 'This song is very difficult to sing… there are so many words in it and they come so fast'. But if Gloria Gaynor recorded the original in a back brace (while recovering from spinal surgery) then anyone can summon the guts to get the party started. Go on now, go…! Difficulty rating: 5/5
