270kg wire theft leads cops to gang that burgled 5 places
Nagpur: A theft of 270 kilograms of electrical wire from a contractor's godown in Lakadganj helped Nagpur crime branch crack open a string of similar offences across the city. Acting on a tip-off, police arrested a 27-year-old man recently and recovered stolen goods and a vehicle worth Rs1.75 lakh.
The theft took place on October 18 around 6.30am in a commercial godown on the second floor of a private hospital near Gangabai Ghat Chowk. The complainant, Mangesh Waghmare (52), an electrical contractor, told police that 65 bundles of branded copper wire — totalling 270kg and worth over Rs2.25 lakh — were stolen after unidentified persons broke the door lock and entered the premises.
Lakadganj police station filed a complaint but crime branch also launched a parallel probe.
Based on technical analysis and local intel, police detained Yogedh alias Lucky Shahu (27), a resident of Dasara Road, Ashok Chowk. During questioning, he admitted to the godown theft and disclosed his involvement in five more similar crimes across the city.
According to investigators, Shahu confessed to thefts in the jurisdictions of Sonegaon (1 case), Dhantoli (2 cases), and Sadar (1 case). He also named three accomplices — Rupesh Pimpalghare (45), a resident of Manewada Road, and Praful Nasine (53), and Shekhar Nasine (43), both of Hilltop, Ambazari.

Police seized three bundles of stolen wire and the four-wheeler used in the crime. The total value of recovered property is estimated at Rs1.75 lakh. Efforts are on to trace the remaining accused and recover the rest of the stolen goods.
