Kenjige spins USA to dominant 57-run win over Oman

Observer18-02-2025

MUSCAT: Oman's spin-heavy strategy backfired as Nosthush Kenjige's career-best spell tore through their batting line-up, leading the USA to a commanding 57-run victory in the ICC World Cup League 2 at the Oman Cricket Academy ground on Tuesday.
The left-arm spinner's five-wicket haul (5-11) proved decisive as Oman collapsed for just 65, their lowest-ever ODI total, while chasing a modest 123-run target. Previously, Oman's lowest ODI score was 81 against Namibia in Windhoek in April 2019.
With this win, the USA avenged their earlier defeat against Oman in the tri-series and strengthened their position at the top of the points table with 22 points from 16 matches.
Oman remained second with 18 at the end of the tri-series, which also featured Namibia (12 points from 16 games), while Canada, with four games in hand, is third on 16 points.
Batting first, the USA struggled early, losing four wickets inside the first 10 overs. Oman's spinners, led by Shakeel Ahmed (3-20) and Aamir Kaleem (2-22), ran through the top order, reducing the visitors to 31-5.
However, Milind Kumar (47 off 82, 6x4) held the innings together with two crucial partnerships. He added 30 runs with Aaron Jones (16) for the sixth wicket and another 33 with Sanjay Krishnamurthi (16) for the seventh, helping the USA post 122 before they were bowled out in 35.3 overs.
Oman's spinners dominated the innings, with nine of the ten wickets falling to them with Kenjige run out.
Shakeel Ahmed finished as the leading wicket-taker of the tri-series with 13 scalps. Samay Shrivastava (2/41), Siddharth Bukkapatnam (1/11), and Jay Odedra (1/23) also played key roles in restricting the USA.
OMAN'S BATTING COLLAPSE
Chasing 123, Oman struggled from the outset as both openers, including skipper Jatinder Singh (7), fell cheaply. Hammad Mirza (29 off 43) was the only batter to offer resistance, but he found little support.
Oman's highest partnership was a modest 22-run stand between Mirza and Hashir Dafedar (9) for the third wicket. The next-best was a 16-run fourth-wicket stand with Sufyan Mehmood (0).
Kenjige's relentless accuracy triggered a dramatic collapse, as Oman crumbled from 57-5 to 65 all out, losing their last five wickets for just eight runs. He dismissed Vinayak Shukla (5) and then sent back Mirza to leave Oman at 60-6. He swiftly ran through the tail, removing Shakeel Ahmed (0), Jay Odedra (0), and Siddharth Bukkapatnam (0) within three overs. Odedra and Bukkapatnam fell within three balls in Kenjige's eighth over.
Kenjige was well supported by the USA's spin attack, with Yasir Mohammad (2-10), Milind Kumar (2-17), and Harmeet Singh (1-25) contributing to Oman's downfall. Kumar was adjudged the player of the match for his all-round performance.
Meanwhile, Oman's Jiten Ramanandi made his ODI debut, receiving his first cap from skipper Jatinder Singh.
Brief scores: USA 122 in 35.3 overs (Milind Kumar 47, Aaron Jones 16, Sanjay Krishnamurthi 16; Shakeel Ahmed 3-20, Aamir Kaleem 2-22, Samay Shrivastava 2-41) beat Oman 65 in 25.3 overs (Hammad Mirza 29; Nosthush Kenjige 5-11, Milind Kumar 2-17, Yasir Mohammad 2-10).

England crush West Indies to complete 3-0 series sweep

LONDON: Jamie Smith struck a maiden one-day international fifty to set-up England's victorious run chase as they completed a 3-0 series sweep of the West Indies at his Oval home ground on Tuesday. Player-of-the-match Smith, opening in ODIs for the first time this series, launched England's pursuit of a revised target of 246 with a quickfire 64 in a match reduced by rain to 40 overs per side "It felt great on my home ground, getting the team off to a good start, taking the pressure off the middle order," Smith told Sky Sports during the presentation ceremony. "That is the role I want to take on." Victory meant Harry Brook led England to a whitewash in his first series as permanent white-ball captain after they had lost their seven previous matches at this level, culminating in a woeful exit from this year's Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Brook was 26 not out at the finish but it was Jos Buttler, his predecessor as captain, who ended the match with an emphatic six out of the ground off fast bowler Jayden Seales that capped an unbeaten 41. "We have been talking about being dominant and finishing the series 3-0," said Brook, adding: "Smith took the game away from West Indies in the powerplay which is what we like to see." England made a blistering start to their chase, scoring 93 in the first seven overs. Smith's fifty came off 25 balls, including nine fours and two sixes. He hit four boundaries in four balls in the seventh over before being bowled by Gudakesh Motie, who earlier made a fine 63 in West Indies' total of 251-9 but conceded 74 runs in his eight overs. EVOLVING ROOT Smith's exit brought in Joe Root, fresh from steering England to a three-wicket win in Cardiff on Sunday with an ODI best of 166 not out that saw the star batsman become his country's leading run-scorer in this Duckett completed a 34-ball fifty including four fours and three sixes, before the left-handed opener fell for 58 when he flayed off-spinner Roston Chase to cover. Root could only manage 44 on Tuesday before he was caught top-edging a hook off Alzarri Joseph. But that still meant the player-of-the-series had scored 267 runs in three innings at an average of 133.5. "There is so much data out there so you have to evolve and expand your game," said Root, also England's leading run-scorer in Test cricket. Earlier, Sherfane Rutherford top-scored for the West Indies with 70 in his first match of the series. The tourists slumped to 121-6, with veteran England leg-spinner Adil Rashid (3-40) taking three wickets in quick succession. But Motie and Alzarri Joseph (41) shared an eighth-wicket stand of 91 in 12 overs before Smith made the West Indies' total look inadequate. The West Indies' day got off to a bad start when traffic problems meant they arrived at the ground late, delaying the start by 30 minutes. England avoided the traffic by riding bikes and made the most of winning the toss to leave their opponents 28-3 inside seven overs. "There are always positives you can take from any series, any match," said West Indies captain Shai Hope, out for a golden duck at the Oval, ahead of a three-match T20 series against England starting at Chester-le-Street on Friday. — AFP

England's Bethell glad of Kohli influence after 1st ODI heroics

Birmingham, United Kingdom: Jacob Bethell said time spent with Virat Kohli compensated for a limited playing stint in the Indian Premier League after he bolstered his hopes of a Test recall with an impressive one-day international innings against the West Indies. Bethell's expertly-paced 82 off 53 balls on his Edgbaston home ground was the top score in England's 400-8 that laid the foundations for a crushing 238-run win as the hosts took a 1-0 lead in a three-match ODI series on Thursday. There were few signs of ring rust in what was Bethell's first international appearance in three months after a hamstring injury ruled the 21-year-old out of the Champions Trophy before his IPL commitments meant he missed last week's Test win over Zimbabwe. Bethell featured just twice for Royal Challengers Bangalore, but on both occasions he opened the batting with India star Kohli, who recently retired from Test duty. "I can't think of a specific thing he said to me that I was like 'that's what I'm going to remember', but it was just an accumulation over the couple of months of chatting to him," Bethell said. "I think he quite enjoys the overseas boys because we're pretty chilled around him, but he's definitely got whatever they say nowadays: 'aura'. It was pretty electrifying to walk out with him. He's got a certain intensity, he flips that switch on as soon as he crosses that line. "It was cool to experience someone of his calibre and how he goes about doing things. "(The IPL) was a great experience and I've definitely taken a lot for my game. I feel like I'm a better player now than I was a couple of months ago." Bethell's IPL stint meant England avoided having to choose between him and vice-captain Ollie Pope at number three in the Test against Zimbabwe. But they could now face a tricky decision ahead of an upcoming five-Test series at home to India, with the issues further complicated by Pope's 171 against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge. Bethell's focus for the moment is on Sunday's second ODI in Cardiff, where England could complete a first 50-over series win since just before the 2023 World Cup. "Whatever happens, it will be and when the time comes, it'll be fine," Bethell added. "I'm still trying to cement my place in this one-day side and the T20 side. If I get a chance in that Test side, I'll be looking to do the same. I'm just taking it game by game." — AFP

Archer out of Windies series in latest injury setback

LONDON: England fast bowler Jofra Archer has suffered yet another injury blow that could hamper plans for a Test return against India later this season. The 30-year-old express quick hurt his right thumb while fielding for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. He could now be out of action for at least a month, with England announcing on Wednesday he had been withdrawn from the upcoming one-day international series against the West Indies. If Archer is sidelined for several weeks, it may also scupper plans England had for reintroducing him to red-ball cricket as well. Archer was expected to play for the second-string England Lions at home to India next month in the hope of making a much-anticipated return during the subsequent five-match series. It is now more than four years since he played the last of his 13 Tests, with Archer since plagued by numerous injuries to his elbow and back. Despite his lengthy absence from Test cricket, Archer is still regarded as a potential match-winner when England look to regain the Ashes in Australia during a 2025/26 tour. An England and Wales Cricket Board statement issued on Wednesday said Archer "will be reassessed by the England medical team over the next fortnight to determine when he may return to action." Left-arm seamer Luke Wood, already in the T20 squad, has been named as Archer's replacement for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies. — AFP
