England's Bethell glad of Kohli influence after 1st ODI heroics
Birmingham, United Kingdom: Jacob Bethell said time spent with Virat Kohli compensated for a limited playing stint in the Indian Premier League after he bolstered his hopes of a Test recall with an impressive one-day international innings against the West Indies.
Bethell's expertly-paced 82 off 53 balls on his Edgbaston home ground was the top score in England's 400-8 that laid the foundations for a crushing 238-run win as the hosts took a 1-0 lead in a three-match ODI series on Thursday.
There were few signs of ring rust in what was Bethell's first international appearance in three months after a hamstring injury ruled the 21-year-old out of the Champions Trophy before his IPL commitments meant he missed last week's Test win over Zimbabwe.
Bethell featured just twice for Royal Challengers Bangalore, but on both occasions he opened the batting with India star Kohli, who recently retired from Test duty.
"I can't think of a specific thing he said to me that I was like 'that's what I'm going to remember', but it was just an accumulation over the couple of months of chatting to him," Bethell said.
"I think he quite enjoys the overseas boys because we're pretty chilled around him, but he's definitely got whatever they say nowadays: 'aura'. It was pretty electrifying to walk out with him. He's got a certain intensity, he flips that switch on as soon as he crosses that line.
"It was cool to experience someone of his calibre and how he goes about doing things.
"(The IPL) was a great experience and I've definitely taken a lot for my game. I feel like I'm a better player now than I was a couple of months ago."
Bethell's IPL stint meant England avoided having to choose between him and vice-captain Ollie Pope at number three in the Test against Zimbabwe.
But they could now face a tricky decision ahead of an upcoming five-Test series at home to India, with the issues further complicated by Pope's 171 against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge.
Bethell's focus for the moment is on Sunday's second ODI in Cardiff, where England could complete a first 50-over series win since just before the 2023 World Cup.
"Whatever happens, it will be and when the time comes, it'll be fine," Bethell added.
"I'm still trying to cement my place in this one-day side and the T20 side. If I get a chance in that Test side, I'll be looking to do the same. I'm just taking it game by game." — AFP

Shreyas Iyer steers Punjab Kings to second IPL final with commanding win over Mumbai Indians
Ahmedabad: Shreyas Iyer rose to the occasion with a captain's knock that will be etched in Punjab Kings' (PBKS) history, as his unbeaten 87 off 41 deliveries powered the franchise into their second Indian Premier League (IPL) final, and first in eleven years, with a five-wicket win over the five time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in the second qualifier in Ahmedabad on Monday. Chasing a stiff target of 204, Punjab showed both aggression and composure to overhaul the total with an over to spare, thanks largely to Iyer's clean striking and calculated leadership in the middle. Punjab's chase began on a shaky note as Prabhsimran Singh fell early to Trent Boult for just 6, leaving PBKS at 13/1 in 2.1 overs. Priyansh Arya provided a quick spark with a brisk 20 off 10 balls before being dismissed by Ashwani Kumar, with the score at 55/2 in 5.1 overs. Australian Josh Inglis then took charge alongside Iyer, stroking a confident 38 off 21 deliveries, including five boundaries and two sixes. However, MI skipper Hardik Pandya removed him at a crucial juncture, momentarily halting Punjab's momentum. With pressure building, Nehal Wadhera partnered with Iyer to put together a critical 84-run stand, maintaining the required rate and keeping Punjab in the hunt. Wadhera missed out on a half-century, falling for 48 to Ashwani Kumar, but by then, the platform had been set. Even as wickets fell around him, including a run-out of Shashank Singh for 2, Iyer remained unflustered. Punjab crossed 100 in 10.3 overs and brought up 150 in 15.1, keeping the scoreboard ticking efficiently. The chase was sealed in 19 overs, with Iyer finishing things off in emphatic style, taking his team to the final with a towering six. This win not only marked Punjab Kings' first IPL final appearance since 2014 but also added a new chapter to Iyer's captaincy legacy. Having already led Delhi Capitals (DC) (2020) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) (2024) to the summit clash, lifting the title with KKR, Iyer now becomes the first captain to reach three IPL finals with three different franchises. With this, he also has a shot at becoming a two-time IPL-winning captain, a feat very few have achieved. This was Punjab's first playoffs after eleven years. With momentum on their side and Iyer in sublime form, Punjab Kings will now set their sights on a historic first IPL trophy. For a franchise that has long lived in the shadows of more successful teams, 2025 might just be their year, and with Shreyas Iyer at the helm, they'll believe anything is possible. Mumbai's bowlers were not up to the mark, and Jasprit Bumrah was off-colour, as he gave away 40 runs in his four overs. Ashwani Kumar picked up 2/55, and Boult and Pandya picked up one wicket each. Earlier, an Exceptional batting performance from the Mumbai Indians powered them to a solid total of 203/6 in their 20 overs during Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Right-hand batters Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow came out to open the innings for the Mumbai-based franchise in the game. The side didn't have the start that they wanted, as the Hardik Pandya-led side lost the wicket of Rohit Sharma at the score of 19. The right-hand batter went back to the pavilion after scoring just eight runs. Following Rohit's dismissal, left-hand batter Tilak Varma was promoted up the order. The Mumbai side touched the 50-run mark in the fifth over of the innings. On the last ball of the seventh over, the Mumbai team lost their second wicket as Bairstow was dismissed by right-arm seamer Vijaykumar Vyshak. The right-hand batter went back to the dressing room after scoring 38 runs off 24 balls, which came with the help of three fours and two sixes in his innings. After Bairstow's departure, right-hand batter Suryakumar Yadav came out to bat. In the 10th over of the innings, the MI side completed their 100-run mark. The Mumbai Indians team lost their third and fourth wicket at the score of 142. The batters to get dismissed at 142 were Suryakumar Yadav (44 runs off 26 balls) and Tilak Varma (44 runs from 29 balls). In the end, right-hand batter Naman Dhir came out to bat and scored a crucial 37 runs in just 18 balls, which was laced by seven boundaries at a strike rate of 205.56. For the Shreyas Iyer-led side, two wickets were snapped by Azmatullah Omarzai (2/43 in 4 overs) and one wicket each was grabbed by Kyle Jamieson (1/30 in 4 overs), Marcus Stoinis (1/14 in 1 over), Vijaykumar Vyshak (1/30 in 3 overs), and Yuzvendra Chahal (1/39 in 4 overs) in their respective spells. Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians 203/6 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 44, Tilak Varma 44; Azmatullah Omarzai 2/43) vs Punjab Kings 207/5 in 20 overs (Shreyas Iyer 87, Nehal Wadhera 48; Ashwani Kumar 2/55).

Rohit stars as Mumbai knock Gujarat out of IPL
CHANDIGARH, India: Rohit Sharma led Mumbai Indians' batting charge with his 81 to knock Gujarat Titans out of the Indian Premier League with a 20-run win in the eliminator on Friday. Electing to bat, five-time champions Mumbai rode on a blazing opening stand between Rohit and England's Jonny Bairstow, who hit 47, to post 228-5 at Mullanpur in New Chandigarh. Bowlers combined to restrict Gujarat to 208-6 despite a valiant 80 by in-form opener Sai Sudharsan in a do-or-die playoff clash. Mumbai will now meet Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad on Sunday to decide Royal Challengers Bengaluru's opponent in the title clash on June 3. Wicketkeeper-batsman Bairstow joined Mumbai ahead of the playoffs due to a few players leaving the tournament to fulfil international commitments and made an instant impact in his 22-ball knock. Rohit, who recently retired from Test cricket along with Virat Kohli, picked up pace despite surviving two dropped catches on three and 12 in a sloppy display of fielding by Gujarat players. He made the most of the reprieves as he hit nine fours and four sixes in his 50 ball knock to be named player of the match. "I've got only four fifties (this season), I think I would have liked to get more," said Rohit. "Today, after having some luck going my way, I knew I had to make the most of it. I'm glad I could do that, and get the team into a good position." Gujarat missed wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler and his replacement Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis dropped two catches with the gloves. "Not easy when we drop three sitters, especially in the powerplay," said Gujarat skipper Shubman Gill. "Not easy for the bowlers to control." Left-arm spinner Sai Kishore denied Bairstow his fifty with Gerald Coetzee taking a relay catch from Sudharsan's rebound. MASSIVE ASSERT BUMRAH Rohit kept up the charge as he went past 7,000 IPL runs and reached his 47th fifty in the tournament with a four. Suryakumar Yadav hit three sixes and one four in his 20-ball 33 before falling to Kishore. Gujarat attempted to pull things back with some disciplined bowling in the middle overs as Prasidh Krishna dismissed Rohit and fellow quick Mohammed Siraj cut short Tilak Varma's knock on 25. Skipper Hardik Pandya finished with a flourish in his unbeaten 22 off nine balls as Coetzee conceded 22 runs in the 20th over. In reply, Gujarat lost Gill in the first over when former New Zealand left-arm quick Trent Boult trapped the opener lbw for one. Sudharsan, who leads the IPL batting chart with 759 runs, put the chase on track in key stands including an 84-run partnership with fellow left-hander Washington Sundar, who hit 48. Pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah bowled Sundar with a yorker and Mumbai's latest England import Richard Gleeson rattled the stumps of Sudharsan to dim Gujarat's hopes. Bumrah returned figures of 1-27 from his four overs and head coach Mahela Jayawardene called him a "massive asset". Impact substitute Sherfane Rutherford fell on 24 in the 19th and with 24 needed in the final over Gleeson, who bowled just three balls before pulling out with apparent cramp, and then Ashwani Kumar kept their calm to seal Mumbai's win. The league was extended by nine days after being paused due to a military conflict between India and Pakistan and some overseas players including Buttler left before the playoffs. — AFP

IPL 2025: MI book Qualifier two clash against PBKS, eliminate GT from title contention
Mullanpur: A brilliant half-century by Sai Sudharsan and his partnership with Washington Sundar went in vain as fine death bowling effort from Mumbai Indians (MI) helped the Blue and Gold franchise eliminate the 2022 champions from the competition with a 20-run win at Mullanpur on Friday. With this win, MI will now play Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Ahmedabad on June 1 for a spot in the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on June 3. During the run-chase, GT was off to the worst imaginable start as skipper Shubman Gill was trapped leg-before-wicket by Trent Boult for just one. GT was 3/1 in 0.4 overs. However, later, Sai and Kusal Mendis started to stitch a partnership, taking down Boult with three sixes in the third over and adding some pressure on MI. Sudharsan continued finding boundaries against Richard Gleeson and MI skipper Hardik Pandya, including three against Hardik in the fifth over. With a four, GT reached the 50-run mark in 4.4 overs. Sudharsan concluded a fine powerplay for GT with two fours against Jasprit Bumrah, taking GT to 66/1, with Sudharsan (43*) and Kusal (20*) unbeaten. The 64-run stand between Sudharsan and Kusal met the most unfortunate end, with the Sri Lankan being hit wicket by Mitchell Santner for 20 in 10 balls, with a four and two sixes. GT was 67/2 in 6.2 overs. Sudharsan continued to accumulate runs effortlessly, bringing up his sixth fifty of the season in 28 balls, with eight fours and a six. GT were in touch with the required run-rate, bringing up their 100-run mark in 9.2 overs. At the end of 10 overs, GT was 106/2, with Sudharsan (67*) and Washington Sundar (16*) unbeaten. In the next three overs, Sundar unlocked a new level against pace, taking down Hardik for a four and six and later hitting Boult for two sixes and a four in the 13th over, accumulating 18 runs for his side. GT reached the 150-run mark in 13.2 overs. Jasprit ended the partnership of 84 in 44 balls, cleaning up Washington with a beautiful yorker for 48 in 23 balls, with five fours and three sixes. GT was 151/3 in 13.4 overs. At the end of 15 overs, GT was 161/3, with Sai (80*) and Sherfane (8*) unbeaten. After Rutherford eased off some pressure with two boundaries, GT were dealt a massive blow as Gleeson cleaned up Sudharsan for 81 in 49 balls, with 10 fours and a six. GT was 170/4 in 15.4 overs. However, another boundary from Rutherford on the final ball reduced the deficit to 54 in the final four overs. In the final three overs, GT was left needing 45 runs. Bumrah bowled the next over, and Tewatia tried making a game out of it, dancing sideways and smashing him for a six. GT was left with 36 in the final two overs, with nine runs coming from the over. Boult started the next over with the wicket of Rutherford for 24 in 15 balls, with four boundaries. GT was 193/5 in 18.1 overs. Boult continued delivering fine yorkers, but Shahrukh Khan hit a six on the final ball, leaving GT with 24 to get in the final over. Ashwani removed Shahrukh on the fourth ball of the final over. GT finished their innings at 208/6, with Tewatia (16*) and Rashid Khan (0*) unbeaten. Boult (2/56) was the top bowler for MI. Bumrah, Gleeson, Santner and Ashwani got a wicket each. Earlier, a clutch half-century from Rohit Sharma and fine finishing from Tilak Varma and skipper Hardik Pandya powered Mumbai Indians (MI) to a massive 228/5 in their 20 overs. After electing to bat first, MI was off to a fine start thanks to their attacking opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow. Rohit smashed two fours against Mohammed Siraj in the third over. But it was nothing compared to what Bairstow unleashed on Prasidh Krishna in the next over, smashing him for three sixes and a four, bringing up MI's fifty-run mark in 3.5 overs. In the final over of the powerplay, Rohit clobbered Sai Kishore for two fours and a six. At the end of six overs, MI was 79/0, with Bairstow (44*) and Rohit (33*) unbeaten. Sai Kishore ended the brutal 84-run stand between Bairstow and Rohit, with Coetzee taking a brilliant catch at short third man. Bairstow was gone for a 22-ball 47, with four boundaries and three sixes. MI was 84/1 in 7.2 overs. A maximum over the square leg region on a Rashid Khan delivery helped Rohit become only the second India to score 7,000 runs in IPL history, besides Virat Kohli (8,618 runs). That hit also brought up MI's 100-run mark in 8.4 overs. With a pull over square leg, Rohit brought up his fourth IPL 2025 fifty in 28 balls, with seven fours and two sixes. At the end of 10 overs, MI was 113/1, with Rohit (56*) and Suryakumar Yadav (7*) unbeaten. In the 12th over, Suryakumar injected some life into his innings, with two successive sixes, crossing the 25-run mark for the 15th successive time this season. However, Sai ended his spell with his wicket, removing him for 33 in 20 balls, with a four and three sixes. Washington Sundar took a fine catch at deep backwards square leg. MI was 143/2 in 13 overs. MI reached the 150-run mark in 14 overs. The Hitman continued to tonk sixes, reaching the 80-run mark. With four overs left, MI was 175/2, with Rohit (81*) and Tilak (11*) unbeaten. A brilliant knock by Rohit ended due to a poorly timed shot, with Rashid getting a catch on Prasidh's delivery. He was gone for 81 in 50 balls, with nine fours and four sixes. MI was 186/3 in 16.4 overs. Tilak, on the other hand, unphased, continued to tonk sixes. But his brief, audacious knock ended as he edged into gloves of Kusal Mendis on a Siraj delivery for 25 in 11 balls, with three sixes. MI was 194/4 in 17.2 overs. 200 was up for MI in 18.2 overs. Prasidh gave MI another death-overs jolt, removing Naman Dhir for nine. MI was 206/5 in 18.4 overs. Gerald Coetzee's final over scored 22 runs, and skipper Hardik Pandya hit him for three sixes. MI ended the innings at 228/5 in 20 overs, with Pandya (22* in nine balls, with three sixes) and Mitchell Santner (0*) unbeaten. Sai (2/42) and Prasidh (2/53) were the top bowlers for GT.
