SIBU (May 28): A retired engineer here reported a loss of over RM220,000 after falling for a non-existent online investment scheme.
Sibu police chief ACP Zulkifli Suhaili said the 60-something victim first encountered the scheme on Instagram on April 9 this year, before being contacted via WhatsApp by two individuals claiming to be company representatives.
'The scammers convinced the victim to download the 'KKR Investment' mobile app, claiming it would allow him to monitor his stock portfolio and accumulated profits.
'Convinced of the scheme's legitimacy, the victim transferred a total of RM224,403 in 11 transactions to four different local bank accounts between April 9 and May 7 as his investment,' he said in a statement.
He said the suspects later informed the victim that his investment had generated a profit of RM750,000 but that he would need to pay a 'tax' of RM100,700 to withdraw the returns.
Suspecting he had been scammed, the victim refused to make payment and lodged a police report.

Traders May Use Subsidised LPG Until Regulation Amendments Finalised
GENERAL PUTRAJAYA, June 5 (Bernama) -- Micro and small-scale traders in the food and beverage sector may continue using subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders without a special permit until the amendments to the Control of Supplies Regulations (PPKB) 2021 are finalised this October. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said no legal action will be taken against this group of traders during the transition period. 'Small and micro food and beverage traders will be allowed to obtain supplies of subsidised LPG cylinders without the need for a scheduled controlled goods permit,' he told a press conference here. He said the Cabinet, in its meeting today, agreed to the ministry's proposal to amend the regulations, which initially came into effect on Oct 15, 2021, under the previous administration. Armizan added that the amendments would, among others, take into account the specific needs of micro and small-scale food and beverage traders, while also ensuring legal clarity in terms of compliance and enforcement. Armizan said the ministry aims to finalise the amendments once Op Gasak concludes on Oct 31. He added that enforcement against leakages involving illegal decanting activities and misuse by industrial users under Op Gasak would continue. 'The Op Gasak report will serve as a basis for us to determine the way forward in ensuring we have suitable legal provisions that are clear and take into account the needs of those providing services to the public, especially food and beverage businesses,' he said. He added that the amendment process will be coordinated through a technical committee established on May 1, chaired by the ministry's secretary-general, and involving relevant ministries and agencies.

Cops submit investigation paper on sexual assault involving actor to DPP
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have submitted the investigation paper on a well-known male actor and singer suspected of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP). Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Shahrulnizam Ja'afar said that the police are currently awaiting further instructions from the Attorney General's Chambers. "The investigation paper was submitted to the DPP this morning and is currently under review. Media reports stated police had arrested a well-known male actor and singer on June 3, who is alleged to have sexually assaulted a teenage girl at a hotel in Selangor. The suspect, was detained under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and released on police bail the same day. MCMC to track vape sales online, work with MOH and KPDN
PUTRAJAYA: The Communications Ministry, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), will monitor online sales of vape and e-cigarette products following increased bans on vape use in several states and concerns over the presence of synthetic substances in these products. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the issue was raised during today's Cabinet meeting and is being reviewed by the Health Ministry (MoH). 'At the same time, I will direct MCMC to examine the online sale of such products. We have found that these sales are largely conducted on platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. 'Any enforcement action will certainly involve the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN),' he told a weekly press conference here today. Fahmi said while vape-related issues fall under the Health Ministry's jurisdiction, the Communications Ministry will monitor the use of social media as a sales platform, particularly for e-cigarette products. 'Insya-Allah, MCMC will prepare a report on this matter, and the Communications Ministry will present it to the Cabinet for further discussion,' he said. He also reaffirmed the Communications Ministry's commitment to working closely with MoH and KPDN to ensure a safer internet environment, particularly for children and families, by addressing issues such as vape and e-cigarette advertisements.
