Ocean views and a taste of the sea: José Andrés opens a new restaurant on Miami Beach

Miami Herald4 days ago

A new restaurant and a new cocktail concept from Chef José Andrés' hospitality group are now open at a new Miami Beach hotel.
The Andaz Miami Beach from the Hyatt Lifestyle Group, formerly The Confidante Hotel, opened earlier this month and is now home to the Mediterranean restaurant Aguasal (named for agua salada, which is Spanish for saltwater) and Bar Centro, an all-day spot for small bites and drinks.
Fittingly, Aguasal is inspired by the sea, according to Andrés, who says the restaurant 'brings with it the flavors of both the Mediterranean coast and Florida's abundant produce.'
Aguasal, which serves breakfast and dinner, is located on the ground floor of the hotel, with indoor and outdoor dining and oceanfront views. Expect teak and woven furniture, stone floors, and lush tropical greenery.
Breakfast is what you might expect: eggs, pancakes and French toast, while the dinner menu leans to seafood. Highlights include chilled seafood like kumamoto oysters with harissa mignonette and Meyer lemon, stone crab and pink gulf shrimp as well as dishes like mussels Saganaki with feta cheese, chives and lemon. There's also a fried whole snapper and cobia with lemon-butter sauce, dill, braised fennel and trout roe.
You'll also find such vegetable dishes as grilled leeks with stracciatella, sumac, hazelnuts and brown butter breadcrumbs and roasted cauliflower with tahini, sesame seeds, ground coriander, pomegranate and puffed quinoa. Meat lovers can try the hanger steak with a marash rub, harissa roasted carrots and potatoes.
On the upper lobby level, Bar Centro features ocean views and is all about the cocktails like the house specialty, a Key lime pie daiquiri, although you can order small bites like croquetas, a new take on a classic Caesar salad or four-cheese grilled cheese. There's caviar service as well.
Aguasal and Bar Centro won't be the only dining concepts at the Andaz. In 2026, The Bazaar by José Andrés will open at the hotel, drawing on Andrés' Spanish heritage and featuring some of his most popular signature dishes. The hospitality group also operates Zaytina, a Mediterranean restaurant at the Ritz Carlton, South Beach.
The Andaz Miami Beach is the first hotel in Florida for the brand and sprawls across 25,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space. It's a Michelin Guide-recommended hotel.
Amar Lalvani, president and creative director of Hyatt's Lifestyle Group, said the Andaz and the José Andrés group were a perfect match.
'Our close collaboration with José and his talented team will bring some very special experiences to the Andaz Miami Beach,' he said. 'The combination of the freshest local ingredients and bold flavors with global influences aligns perfectly with what Andaz is all about.'

29-Year-Old Amaury Pierron from Brioude, France, Takes 2nd Place in Elite Men Downhill Race, Rises to Top Season Rankings 20-Year-Old UK Team Rider Jordan Williams Takes 3rd Place LOUDENVIELLE-PEYRAGUDES, France, June 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Stop Two of the 2025 season is in the books! Monster Energy congratulates Amaury Pierron on taking second place in the UCI Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup in Loudenvielle-Peyragudes, France, this weekend. In the second race of the season, the 29-year-old from Brioude, France, rose to the podium on the challenging track. Also rising to the podium, 20-year-old Jordan Williams from Bristol, United Kingdom, claimed third place in Sunday's final. Williams was joined in the Top Five by 28-year-old Monster Energy team rider Luca Shaw from Hendersonville, North Carolina, in fifth place with a finish time of 3:16.776. Shaw now holds fifth place in season rankings with 294 points. The Elite Women Downhill final concluded with 35-year-old Camille Balanche from Le Locle, Switzerland, in fourth place. The Swiss team rider battled high winds in the upper segment of the track and treacherous conditions in the lower half to earn a finish time of 3:48.776. Balanche now ranks fifth in the 2025 season standings with 305 points. From May 30 to June 1, the 2025 UCI Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup descended on the iconic trails of Loudenvielle-Peyragudes. In stop two of the season, the challenging and technical racetrack in the heart of the French Pyrenees mountains hosted the world elite of the sport. The action-filled weekend also stoked visitors with live concerts, mountain bike expositions, and fan activations in the event village. In Sunday's Elite Men Downhill final, Amaury Pierron dropped in as the number one qualifier and last rider on the course. Charging into the top section, Pierron managed to build a 0.7-second lead over the fastest rider by the third split of the race. But when the dust settled, the Frenchman concluded the track 1.5 seconds behind the winner with a time of 3:14.729 for a strong second-place finish. "It was a crazy race this time around in Loudenvielle. We've always raced here in the wet and later in the season. This was dry and really fast. The average speeds were scary, as if there was no limit! Everyone was going really fast all weekend, and I'm just glad to have stayed on my bike in these conditions, get through to the final, and now the podium. So happy with this," said Monster Energy's Pierron. On the strength of Sunday's result, Pierron now commands first place in the 2025 UCI Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup season rankings with 440 points. Joining Pierron on the podium, Jordan Williams claimed third place in Sunday's final with a finish time of 3:16.163. After battling a knee injury during the 2024 season, the former Junior Division Mountain Bike Downhill World Champion is fully back in the saddle and now holds eighth place in season rankings with 243 points. "It was insane - it was just so fast!" said Monster Energy's Williams, adding: "I did not expect to land on the podium here. It's been a while trying to get up to speed after my knee injury last year, and to do it here on this track in these conditions is wild! Huge thanks for all the support and for the team getting me back on track. I took a few risks and that paid off! Very stoked!" The action continues next weekend with the 2025 UCI Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup, in Saalfelden Leogang, Austria, from June 5 to 8, 2025. This Italian Island Hotel Sits Inside a Stunning 1920s Post Office—and It's Surprisingly Affordable

As we made the very short drive across Ponte Umbertino, the bridge that connects the beautiful island of Ortigia to the rest of Sicily's Siracusa (Syracuse), one of the first sights to greet us was a grand building formerly known as the Palazzo Delle Poste . Now home to the Ortea Palace Hotel, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, the former post office near the water's edge welcomes its guests with a stunning, sun-filled courtyard within an atrium, complete with Medieval columns and Italian marble floors. Outside, fishing boats gently bob up and down on the calm Ionian Sea. Flanked by statues and traditional Sicilian art, guests can soak in their surroundings upon arrival by enjoying an aperitivo at Champagnetta, the hotel's lounge bar in the heart of the atrium, before heading out to explore the historic center by foot. The hotel is in a prime location to start and finish a beautiful walking route along the entire perimeter of the island. A jog along the two-mile scenic pathway that hugs the rugged coastline quickly became our morning routine. Given the island is only just over half a mile long, and even less wide, all of Ortigia's attractions are within easy walking distance of the hotel. We even left the island to walk to the Neapolis Archeological Park in Siracusa, which only took around 45 minutes. After a day exploring the charming, narrow streets of Ortigia and indulging in some of Sicily's finest culinary delights—from artisanal gelato to arguably the best pizza I've ever eaten—the Ortea Palace Hotel offers a luxurious retreat to relax and recharge. Here, my review of Ortea Palace Hotel, Sicily, Autograph Collection. The grandiose lobby is the focal point of this hotel and home to the beautiful lounge bar, Champagnetta. The hotel has an unbeatable waterfront location within easy walking distance of all local attractions. The stunning spa effortlessly combines classic Italian architecture with modern amenities and treatments. With 75 rooms and suites, the Ortea Palace offers elegant yet comfortable accommodation with a wide variety of options depending on needs and budget. Given the hotel's enviable waterside location, many suites boast wonderful sea views, with internal-facing rooms above the atrium also an option. My wife and I stayed in a signature top-floor suite, which wowed us with a dual aspect view out to the Ionian Sea and a furnished wrap-around balcony, the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of Sicilian wine as the sun sank behind the distant hills of Siracusa. Floor-to-ceiling marble bathrooms fully stocked with Diptyque bath and shower products added a luxurious touch alongside the robes and slippers we enjoyed at the end of a busy day. Guests can enjoy a mixology experience in the historical setting of Champagnetta. Predrag Vuckovic/Ortea Palace Hotel, Sicily, Autograph Collection The courtyard feels like the epicenter of the Ortea Palace and has been designed for socializing and entertaining, so it's no surprise that two of the hotel's main food and beverage venues are located here, set at opposite ends of the atrium. Il Cortile, the hotel's Mediterranean-inspired restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Take a few steps across the marble floor and you will find yourself at the chic, art-deco lounge bar, Champagnetta. Pull up a plush stool and peruse the list of classic Italian cocktails to enjoy while you're entertained by the live musicians who perform regularly at the piano. The hotel's rooftop fine-dining restaurant, Incanto, serves elevated Mediterranean dishes with spectacular views over Ortigia from its terrace and is something of a hidden gem for a special occasion or private function. The indoor pool at the ITV Siracusa spa. Ortea Palace Hotel, Sicily, Autograph Collection The hotel's spa has been designed to stay true to the building's classic Italian style while making no compromises when it comes to ensuring it meets all the modern expectations of a five-star hotel guest. The ornate swimming pool, complete with a small hydrotherapy area, is reminiscent of a traditional Roman bathhouse. Additional facilities available to guests include a Turkish bath, oversized glass sauna, 24-hour gym, multi-sensory showers, and the hotel's latest experience, La Nuvola (the Cloud), where a unique therapy uses sound, light, and motion to create the feeling of being suspended on a cloud. The hotel is designed with accessibility in mind, incorporating ramps and elevators as well as accessible bedrooms and bathrooms. The hotel concierge is available to organize accessible transportation, assisted check-in, and personalized support for guests. Energy-efficient lighting, appliances, and building systems are utilized to reduce energy consumption, and the hotel takes part in Marriott International's efforts to minimize water waste by implementing low-flow fixtures systems and food waste by composting. Given the small size of the island and the fact that many areas are inaccessible to cars, the best way to explore Ortigia is on foot. The hotel is steps from the city center, with many options for eating and drinking, shopping, and enjoying historical sites including churches, piazzas, fountains, and the Medieval fortress. Should you decide to drive to Ortigia, the Ortea Palace Hotel does offer valet private parking for €40 per night, including the option to charge electric vehicles for an additional fee. As an Autograph Collection hotel, part of Marriott's portfolio, you can redeem Marriott Bonvoy points towards your stay at the Ortea Palace Hotel. Nightly rates at Ortea Palace Hotel, Sicily, Autograph Collection start from €300 (about $340 USD). Every T+L hotel review is written by an editor or reporter who has stayed at the property, and each hotel selected aligns with our core values.
