Canadian swimmer Aurelie Rivard to skip para world championship to focus on studies
The 29-year-old native of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., said she remains passionate about the sport but wants to focus on earning her law degree at Laval University.
'I've always put swimming first,' Rivard said Sunday in a statement. 'I took sabbatical sessions and built my life around this sport.'
'But at this point, with just under a year to go in law school and the goal of graduating in April 2026, I didn't want to put off again.'
Rivard has won six gold medals at the Paralympics since making her debut in 2012.
'I'm still training and I'm still enjoying the process,' Rivard said. 'LA 2028 is still in the back of my mind. This is my fifth cycle, and I want to approach it slowly and thoughtfully, without burning out. I was excited about the worlds, but this time it didn't fit into my schedule.'
Rivard was scheduled to compete at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Victoria on Monday and Tuesday.
Singapore will host the Sept. 21-27 world championship.

LA28 unveiled two new Paralympic emblems to mark three years out from the first Los Angeles Paralympic Games. One custom emblem — named Relentless Reinvention — has "a pixelated kaleidoscope of ideas that converge to create a transformed and multifaceted version of oneself - one that pushes the boundaries of what seems possible and reaches again and again for greatness," according to LA28. Another custom emblem — named Innovation Moonshot — tries "as many keys as possible until one unlocks full potential and maximum creativity." On Aug. 15, 2028, the first Paralympics to be held in Los Angeles will begin with an Opening Ceremony at SoFi Stadium. While LA previously hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984, the Paralympic Games did not start regularly following the Olympics in the same host city until 1988. The LA Paralympics will feature 560 medal events across 23 sports, including the debut of Para climbing. The venue plan calls for all of the competition sites to be within a 35-miles radius. After the Opening Ceremony at SoFi Stadium, medal events will be held at LA venues including the Coliseum (track and field), Arena (wheelchair basketball) and USC's Galen Center (badminton and wheelchair rugby). LA 2028 Olympic organizers offer venue naming rights to bring in revenue
In what's being called "the largest commercial revenue raise in sports," the LA28 Olympic organizing committee announced on Thursday that sponsors can purchase naming rights of competition venues. LA28 Organizers said it's the first time in Olympic and Paralympic Games that such a bid has been undertaken, and it's part of the committee's mission to keep the Games fully privately funded with no new builds. It's billed as an opportunity to bring multiple millions to the 2028 Games and LA28 Chairperson and President, Casey Wasserman called the first-ever Olympic venue naming rights program historic. "These groundbreaking partnerships with Comcast and Honda, along with additional partners to come, will not only generate critical revenue for LA28 but will introduce a new commercial model to benefit the entire Movement," he said. Honda already has naming rights for the volleyball arena in Anaheim, and Comcast acquired the rights to a temporary squash venue. Under the new pilot program, qualifying LA28 partners will have the opportunity to keep existing venue naming rights during Games time, as well as secure additional marketing assets to significantly bolster their activation efforts. "We're a private enterprise responsible for delivering these games," Wasserman said in an interview with The Associated Press. "It's my job to push. That doesn't mean we're going to win every time we push, but it's our job to always push because our context is pretty unique." Also, the opportunity for naming rights of up to 19 temporary venues will become available to Worldwide Olympic & Paralympic Games partners and LA28 partners. The naming rights for iconic venues like the Rose Bowl, LA Coliseum, or Dodger Stadium will not be for sale, and International Olympic Committee rules still apply for advertising on the field of play -- it's forbidden.
