S. Korea ranks 7th in domestic vehicle output in 2024

Korea Herald10-03-2025
South Korea ranked seventh in the world in terms of domestic vehicle output last year, an industry association said Monday, down one notch from a year earlier due to a drop in output amid an economic slowdown.
The country's domestic car production fell to 4.13 million units in 2024 from 4.24 million a year ago as local consumption slowed, according to a report released by the Korea Automobile & Mobility Association.
High inflation and high interest rates weighed on consumer sentiment in 2024, driving down vehicle sales in the domestic market, the KAMA report said.
"A combination of sluggish domestic demand and possible US tariffs on vehicle shipments to the United States will likely continue to weigh on local production," a KAMA official said by phone.
He called on the government to provide carmakers with more tax benefits for local production of next-generation vehicles and facility investments to minimize the impact of declining production on related industries.
China, the United States, Japan and India were the top four car manufacturing countries last year, with 31.28 million units, 10.56 million, 8.23 million and 6.01 million, respectively, the report said.
The world's overall vehicle production fell 0.5 percent to 93.95 million units last year, marking the first on-year decline since 2020, when the corresponding figure plunged 15.4 percent due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (Yonhap)

Over half of midsized firms report profit decline in H1: data

A majority of midsized firms reported declines in operating profit in the first half of the year amid economic uncertainties, industry data showed Wednesday. According to the data from corporate tracker CEO Score, 500 listed midsized firms posted a combined operating profit of 6.34 trillion won ($4.55 billion) in the January-June period, down 4.1 percent from 6.62 trillion won a year ago. Sales, however, climbed 3.1 percent on-year to 122.6 trillion won during the same period. Out of the 500 firms, 269, or 53.8 percent, saw operating profit fall, while 60 firms, or 12 percent, remained in the red. The information technology and electronics sector suffered the steepest decline, with combined operating profit dropping 25 percent to 1 trillion won from 1.35 trillion won a year earlier. The construction sector also struggled, as its combined operating profit plunged 42.5 percent, or 222.3 billion won, from a year ago. In contrast, the service sector recorded the strongest growth, with operating profit soaring 30.7 percent on-year to 1.04 trillion won from 797.7 billion won. "The IT and electronics sector was hit hard by sluggish demand driven by US tariffs," said an official from CEO Score, adding that a prolonged economic slump weighed heavily on midsized firms' bottom lines. S. Korea, Britain agree to accelerate talks to upgrade FTA

Senior diplomats of South Korea and Britain on Monday agreed to speed up negotiations to upgrade a bilateral free trade agreement as part of efforts to expand trade and investment, the foreign ministry said. Second Vice Foreign Minister Kim Jina and Catherine West, parliamentary under secretary of state for the Indo-Pacific at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in Britain, reached the agreement during the Senior Economic Dialogue. During the talks, the two sides explored ways to expand cooperation in areas such as trading and investment, economic security, artificial intelligence and quantum technology, the defense industry and energy, the ministry said in a release. They also agreed to expedite talks to revise the FTA in line with the agreements made by President Lee Jae Myung and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in Canada in June. Last month, trade delegations of the two countries held the fifth round of negotiations on easing regulations on product origins and introduced new rules in the areas of supply chains and digital trade. In addition, Seoul officials asked for the British government to "favorably review" its safeguard measures against homegrown steel products and an electric vehicle subsidy scheme to ensure fair competition for Korean companies, it noted. During the two-day stay, West will meet Second Deputy National Security Adviser Lim Woong-soon to discuss regional security and support for Ukraine, and visit the Demilitarized Zone separating the two Koreas and meet North Korean defectors, the British Embassy in Seoul said. Cha Vaccine Institute names Pfizer veteran as new CEO

Cha Vaccine Institute said Monday it has appointed its R&D chief Han Seung-il as its new CEO. Han, an industry veteran who worked at Pfizer for more than 20 years, joined Cha Vaccine Institute in June as vice president leading the R&D team. He studied biology at Korea University and earned his Ph.D. from Purdue University in the US. He continued his academic career as a postdoctoral research associate at The Scripps Research Institute and later as a research assistant professor at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, specializing in structural biology. In 2002, Han began his industry career at Pfizer, where he served as a research fellow at the company's US R&D center. He played a key role in bringing several new drugs to market with US Food and Drug Administration approvals, including the COVID-19 vaccine Comirnaty, the respiratory syncytial virus vaccine Abrysvo and the immunology treatment Cibinqo. In an industry first, Han introduced cryo-electron microscopy technology at Pfizer. The application of the technology to structure-based drug design led to the discovery of more than 10 new drug targets annually. 'I will quickly establish and execute a clear roadmap for technology transfer, clinical trials, and commercialization of the company's pipeline,' Han said. 'I will help the company leap forward as a competitive R&D player on the global stage.'
