Panthers fans make early preparations for this year's championship parade

Miami Herald22-06-2025
Fans showed up before the sun in Fort Lauderdale Beach to stake out spots. Marty Kareff of Coral Springs booked a room at the B Ocean hotel on A1A Saturday night to ensure a good spot.
He was saving spots for late arriving family and friends. 'It was easy at 5 o'clock,' he said. 'We missed the parade last year because we had a vacation planned. No more summer vacation until July.'
'Got a nice crowd out here,' Everett said, adding that they sell coconuts on the beach most weekends. 'We're out here on the regular.'
There were no takers early in, he said, but he was confident the heat would increase the popularity of his product. 'They're gonna come '
Brian and Christina Doogue of Davie arrived early too, around 6:15 with an entourage of about 35. They set up a big tent along the route — an excellent way to hide from the sun, at least for a while.
Doogue who coaches a 10-and-under team at Ice End in Coral Springs, said the group was named Bennett this year, after Panther Sam Bennett, the Conn Smythe winner.
'We'd love him to come by and give us an autograph,' he said. 'Our team has won the championship two years in a row, too'
The crowd, perhaps buoyed by the fact it wasn't storming like it was a year ago, was friendly and boisterous, sharing water and chanting together. Shouts of 'Bobby! BOBBY!' [for Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky] echoed through the streets near the Elbo Room [the first place the Cup made an appearance this year], a long with the requisite chants of 'Skinner, Skinner.' Skinner, the Edmonton goalie shelled by the Cats in the final game, may want to forget how many pucks got by him, but the Panthers fans haven't.
Despite the heat, fans showed up in the jerseys of their favorites, from Aleksander Barkov to Carter Verhaege to Brad Marchand. One fan in a Marchand jersey and what had to be a very hot rat mask, led the cheer of 'Let's go, Panthers.'
Along the extremely noisy parade route, which got louder as noon grew closer, Rhiannon Langley and Carmen Ellis were lying stomachs down on the pavement, reading. Or at least trying to read.
Langley was reading Ghosts of Honolulu by Leon Carroll Jr and Mark Harmon, while Ellis was absorbed in Suzanne Collins ' Hunger Games prequel, 'Sunrise on the Reaping.'
The clamor did not faze Langley, who says she reads 10 to 15 books a month.
'I just block it out,' she said.
Ellis, who gives two thumbs up to Sunrise on the Reaping, admitted the reading might not last much longer.
'We're just reading till the action starts,' she said.

Panthers DL Derrick Brown talks about his return to action after last season's knee injury

Carolina Panthers defensive lineman Derrick Brown is back where he should be. This past Saturday's exhibition outing marked the Pro Bowl defender's first game since Sept. 8, 2024—when he sustained a season-ending knee injury against the New Orleans Saints. Brown talked about his return following Monday's practice. "I was just definitely anxious, especially coming back from camp," he told reporters. "Soon as I got back, got the oblique injury. Knee's been good. "I think a big thing for me was just making it through a whole week. Traveling with the team Wednesday, practicing on Thursday, during the walkthroughs and everything and just being able to finish out the week and the game." Brown, who missed 16 of the team's 17 contests in 2024, played three snaps in the 20-3 loss to the Houston Texans. The sixth-year veteran, however, had some convincing to do to even get those looks. "I think it was a lot of pestering all week, leading up to that," Brown said of pleading his case to the coaching staff. "I definitely sat on the sideline in high anticipation the week before, for the Cleveland game. Didn't practice. So getting back out there was awesome." But that could be it this summer for Brown, as the Panthers are not expected to play their starters in Thursday's preseason finale versus the Pittsburgh Steelers. Panthers HC Dave Canales speaks on his team's new addition at QB

There's a new Bryce in town for the Carolina Panthers. Monday marked the first practice in Charlotte for quarterback Bryce Perkins, whom the Panthers officially signed this morning. Head coach Dave Canales was asked about his early impressions of his newest passer following the session. "Accurate," Canales replied. "He came in today, really excited to get him in here. The UFL MVP. He's earned this opportunity. And just going into the [Pittsburgh] Steelers game—if Andy [Dalton] can't turn it around and get the soreness out and we don't have to play him, then Jack [Plummer] and Bryce can play that game for us." That game, Thursday's preseason finale against Pittsburgh, won't see starting quarterback Bryce Young. The Panthers may also hold out their second-stringer in Dalton, who sustained a mild muscle strain during Saturday's outing in Houston. Those absences could set the stage for Perkins, the United Football League's reigning Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year. The 28-year-old, who was also a member of the Los Angeles Rams between 2020 and 2022, totaled 1,611 yards and 14 touchdowns over seven contests for the Michigan Panthers this past spring. Canales continued. "It's great to be able to just reward somebody who's gone to another league, played so well, but also spent three years with the Rams," he added. "So, there is some carryover. Some of the words are familiar to him, but it's kinda a marriage of two different systems. But football's football—and he's played a lot of it, he's played significant snaps. I'm excited for him to be here." Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

Panthers great Cam Newton to have jersey number retired by Auburn

Before he was a Carolina Panthers legend, Cam Newton was a University of Auburn legend. So before there was a No. 1, there was a No. 2. But that won't be the case, at least for the Tigers' football program, any longer—as the school announced on Monday that they will retire Newton's No. 2 jersey this upcoming season. Newton's lone year at Auburn is regarded as one of, if the not greatest season in college football history. That storybook 2010 campaign saw the Atlanta, Ga. native pass for 2,908 yards and 30 touchdowns and run for 1,473 yards and 20 more scores en route to a landslide victory of the Heisman Trophy and the second-ever national championship in Auburn's history. His efforts helped him become the first overall selection of the 2011 NFL draft—a pick made, of course, by the Panthers. Auburn is set to officially retire Newton's number on Oct. 11, before the Tigers take on the Georgia Bulldogs at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Newton will be the fourth Tiger to have his number retired—joining Bo Jackson, Pat Sullivan and Terry Beasley. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.
