Knicks' Jalen Brunson gives hysterical response to shock report about dad's coaching future in New York

Daily Mail02-07-2025
Jalen Brunson had a hysterical response on Tuesday to a surprising update regarding his father's coaching future with the Knicks.
The point guard's father, Rick, has been an assistant coach for the team since 2022 - the same summer that his son went to New York in free agency.
However, the Knicks fired head coach Tom Thibodeau last month, and it is not uncommon for assistants to be let go along with their former bosses.
And while the Knicks have yet to settle on a new head coach, it looks as if the elder Brunson will be sticking around regardless.
Veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein wrote in his Stein Line substack that Rick was expected to remain part of the Knicks' staff - as well as other 'key holdovers' from Thibodeau's staff.
And Brunson had a humorous reaction to that news.
'WHAT?!,' the Knicks star sarcastically wrote on X in response to the report.
Brunson enjoys a close relationship with his dad, who is known to have coached him with some tough love during his younger years.
However, some fans believe it's time to move on from Rick.
'This is not how a healthy team operates. For all the success of the Leon Rose era, nepotism and cronyism are a big part of what will eventually be his legacy,' one said on X. 'Hate rooting for a team that employs Rick Brunson.
'I genuinely think making Rick Brunson stay on the coaching staff has a trickle down effect,' another said.
Last month, Sam Amico reported for Hoops Wire that multiple Knicks players have been unhappy with Rick's presence on staff.
The report did not specify what the specific issue with Rick was, though sources suggested to the publication that Rick 'has had too big a say in things.'
Following their first run to the conference finals in 25 years, the Knicks are in the market for a new head coach - and the conclusion of that hunt seems to be getting nearer.
According to multiple reports, former Cavs, Lakers and Kings coach Mike Brown has emerged as the favorite for the job.
Brown is reportedly set to undergo a second interview for the role, while former Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins has also interviewed for the job.
The 55-year-old Brown was fired by the Kings after a 13-18 start to last season - which followed two straight years of 46-plus wins for the struggling Sacramento franchise.

Kyle Schwarber homers in Phillies' 20-hit attack to rout Mariners

August 20 - Kyle Schwarber doubled, homered and had five RBIs, giving him an MLB-leading 109 this season, as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the visiting Seattle Mariners 11-2 on Wednesday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep. Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo (12-6) allowed one run on three hits over six innings. The left-hander didn't walk a batter and struck out 12. The National League East-leading Phillies, who won for the fifth time in their past six games, got big contributions from the top and bottom of their batting order. Leadoff hitter Trea Turner went 5-for-6 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs to spark a 20-hit attack. Schwarber, who bats second, and No. 8 and 9 hitters Max Kepler and Bryson Stott each went 3-for-5, with Kepler hitting a home run and Stott adding a double and two RBIs. Julio Rodriguez and Eugenio Suarez hit solo shots for the Mariners, who went 2-7 on their nine-game trip. Suarez's leadoff homer to left field off reliever David Robertson in the top of the seventh pulled Seattle within 3-2. The Phillies pulled away with five runs in the bottom of the frame, then added three more in the eighth. Mariners reliever Tayler Saucedo walked Brandon Marsh and hit Harrison Bader with a pitch in the seventh. With one out, Stott grounded a run-scoring single to left, sending Bader to third. Stott stole second and Turner drove in a run with an infield single. After Turner stole second, Schwarber grounded a two-run single to right and took second on a throwing error by outfielder Luke Raley. Bryce Harper grounded an RBI single to left to make it 8-2. Turner drove in a run in the eighth with an infield single and Schwarber followed with a two-run shot to right. It was Schwarber's 45th homer of the season, two behind Seattle's Cal Raleigh for the MLB lead. Mariners starter Luis Castillo (8-7) gave up three runs on 10 hits over four innings. The right-hander walked two and fanned two. After Rodriguez went deep in the top of the first, the Phillies tied the score at 1-all in the bottom of the inning as Turner tripled and Schwarber hit a sacrifice fly. Philadelphia took the lead in the second as Bader led off with an infield single and reached second on third baseman Suarez's throwing error. With one out, Stott hit an RBI double. Kepler led off the fourth with a homer to right to make it 3-1. --Field Level Media

Tigers score early, go on to sweep series from Astros

August 20 - Dillon Dingler had an RBI triple during a six-run first and the host Detroit Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Houston Astros with a 7-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon. Dingler also doubled while scoring two runs for the American League Central Division leaders. Javier Baez contributed two hits and two RBIs, while Spencer Torkelson added an RBI double. Winning pitcher Charlie Morton (9-10) allowed two runs, three hits and three walks while striking out eight in six innings. Brenan Hanifee, Tyler Holton and Rafael Montero combined for three innings of scoreless relief. Detroit has won nine of its last 11 games. Mauricio Dubon's two-run homer ended Houston's 31-inning scoreless drought. The Astros were shut out in four of their previous five games. Houston starter Framber Valdez (11-7) was charged with all seven Detroit runs. He gave up seven hits and four walks with two strikeouts in five innings. Houston center fielder Taylor Trammell left the game in the first inning after crashing into the wall. Valdez got into trouble in the first by walking Jahmai Jones and Gleyber Torres. Andy Ibanez drove in the first run with a single. Torkelson then slashed an opposite-field, ground-rule double to bring home Torres. Ibanez scored on a wild pitch, and after Riley Greene drew a walk, Torkelson also scored on a wild pitch. Dingler's triple to deep center scored Greene, and Dingler scored on Baez's single against a drawn-in infield. Jeremy Pena had a leadoff double in the third but a pair of popouts allowed Morton to keep the Astros off the board. Dingler ripped a one-out line drive double to left in the bottom of the inning and scored on Baez's two-out single to center for a 7-0 lead. Dubon ended the Astros' scoring drought when he blasted a two-out sinker from Morton over the right-center field wall. Yainer Diaz, who walked two batters earlier, also scored on Dubon's seventh homer this season. Houston had runners in scoring position with one out in the fifth. Morton responded by striking out the next two batters. --Field Level Media
