Vaughan breaks down ‘science' behind Rishabh Pant's ‘madness': ‘MS Dhoni was fantastic. But…'

Hindustan Times4 hours ago

Rishabh Pant's extraordinary batting display in the opening Test against England at Headingley has sparked widespread admiration from some of England's most respected former cricketers. Pant's centuries in both innings were the highlight of India's performance despite a five-wicket defeat, and his fearless approach won over even those watching from the other side of the fence. Appearing on the episode of the Stick to Cricket show, former England captain Michael Vaughan couldn't help but praise the maverick left-hander. 'There's a lot of science in that madness, the way that he plays,' Vaughan said. 'You can see even Ben Stokes is admiring when he's batting.'
Pant's unique method, unpredictable, audacious, and still incredibly effective, drew comparisons to some of the greatest wicketkeeper-batters the game has seen. 'Adam Gilchrist for me is the best wicketkeeper-batter,' Vaughan remarked. 'But Pant just set a new trend. I mean, MS Dhoni, across white ball cricket, was fantastic. You would think with the way that he plays, Pant would be completely suited to the white ball game and not so much the Test game. But his Test record is miles better than his white ball record.'
Alastair Cook and David Lloyd joined Vaughan in commending Pant's influence with the bat, but also his attitude on the field, especially his ability to engage in banter with opponents. Former spinner Phil Tufnell lightened the mood by demonstrating Pant's flamboyant ramp shot, which the panel dubbed the 'roly-poly ramp shot.'
Lying flat on the floor in exaggerated style, Tufnell joked, 'It's like tossing a pancake when he hits that,' drawing loud laughter from his fellow panellists. Cook's praise
Cook, meanwhile, was quick to point out that behind Pant's jovial exterior lies a hardened competitor. 'That smile doesn't mean he doesn't like (to win). Or that he's not the most competitive (player),' Cook noted. 'You don't score two centuries and not really want to. He could have tossed (been casual in the second innings) and said I've scored a hundred in the first innings. But he didn't.'
Despite Pant's twin centuries in the Test, India were largely let down by underperforming lower-middle order and the bowling attack bar Jasprit Bumrah, as the side faced a five-wicket defeat. Both sides will return for the second Test of the series on July 2.

‘Shubman Gill's captaincy looked ‘reactive rather than proactive' in first Test': David Lloyd

Former English cricketer David Llyod said that new India skipper Shubman Gill's captaincy came across as 'reactive rather than proactive' in the 1st Test against England at Leeds. India failed to defend 371 runs in the 4th innings with England, courtesy of a century by Ben Duckett, won the match by 5 wickets and took 1-0 lead in the five-match series. 'The intrigue is with Shubman Gill, who's a very inexperienced skipper. How's he going to come back from that. He's got Ravindra Jadeja and Karun Nair, who are in their 30s. So he's got experience in his team. It's great having a young team that he's got. But he's tactically he's reactive rather than proactive in the stuff that he's doing,' Lloyd said on the Stick to Cricket show. Former England skipper Alastair Cook compared Gill's ascent as captain to current Three Lions leader Ben Stokes, saying that there is always a phase when the team gets used to the new captain. 'When you take over a team, there will always be a phase when the team gets used to the new leader. This happened with (Ben) Stokes when he came in. It took a while (for England players) to get used to him when he came in and said, 'We're going to try and smash every ball,' Cook said. Even former India spinner Murali Kartik had said that that multiple players giving instructions in the field in addition to the captain is never a good sign which was what happened on Day 5 of the Headingley Test. Among the many things that were noted about how India went about their business over the course of the final day of the first Test was the amount of instructions that senior players of the side like KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant were giving after Prasidh Krishna's strikes in the second session. 'At one point I felt there were too many captains,' said Kartik on Cricbuzz. 'I just couldn't understand that. KL Rahul was making hand movements, Rishabh Pant was also doing it, and so was Shubman Gill who is actually the man appointed as captain. I couldn't understand those multiple hand signals. You wouldn't want to complicate things. There is only one captain.' 'A senior player making slight changes here and there, correcting someone slightly when they feel they are slightly in the wrong position, sending third man or short fine, mid-on, mid-off; these are all fine occasionally. However, so many players taking calls so frequently is not a good sign.'

Pant could join Bradman, Dravid, Lara in elite list with another ton at Edgbaston

Edgbaston [UK], June 27 (ANI): Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant could join a list of legends like Don Bradman, Rahul Dravid and Brian Lara with another century at Edgbaston during the second Test against England. Pant continued his red-hot Test form, slamming entertaining, counter-attacking and stroke-filled 134 and 118 during the first Leeds Test, which went in vain as India failed to defend the target of 371 runs and lost by five wickets. The swashbuckling left-hander has a solid record in England, with 808 runs in 10 Tests and 19 innings at an average of 42.52, with four centuries and two fifties. His best score is 146. The last time he was at Edgbaston back in July 2022, he smashed a counter-attacking 146 in 111 balls, with 19 fours and four sixes, and his partnership with Ravindra Jadeja powered India to 416 from a troublesome situation of 98/5. India lost the match as England successfully chased down the 378 set by them. Now, if Pant scores another century at Edgbaston, he will join Bradman, Australia's Warren Bardsley, Dravid, Lara, Australia's Charles George Macartney and New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell as the seventh visiting batter to score centuries in three successive Tests in England. He will be only the second Indian after Dravid to repeat the feat after 23 years, slamming 115 at Nottingham, following it with 148 at Leeds and 217 at The Oval. The latest visiting batter who pulled off this feat was Kiwi all-rounder Mitchell, who smashed 108 at Lord's, 190 at Nottingham and 109 at Leeds. After surpassing MS Dhoni both for most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper-batter and runs by an Asian wicketkeeper-batter in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia (SENA) conditions and becoming the first Indian wicketkeeper-batter with twin tons in a Test at Leeds, will Pant continue his historic run in the series so far? The second Test will take place from July 2 onwards. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. England Men's Test squad for 2nd Test: Ben Stokes (capt), Jofra Archer, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.
