No Jasprit Bumrah In Combined India vs England XI: "The Greatest Doesn't Get In The Team"
Jasprit Bumrah played only three of the five Tests against England in the recently-concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Before the Indian team left for England, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir had said Bumrah wouldn't feature in more than three Tests on tour due to workload management, especially after picking up a back injury in the Sydney Test against Australia in January this year. Bumrah featured in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, followed by the third and fourth games at Lord's and Old Trafford, Manchester, respectively. In three games, Bumrah picked 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, coming off bowling 119.4 overs at an average of 26. Bumrah wasn't included in the playing eleven for the fifth Test at The Oval and was subsequently released from the squad ahead of day two's play. While Bumrah missed two crucial matches, both of which India won, Mohammed Siraj stepped up. So, it was not entirely a surprise when a group of former England players got together to pick a combined XI of the two teams and Bumrah missed out. Former England cricketers Alastair Cook, Michael Vaughan, David Lloyd (Bumble) and Phil Tufnell were part of the group. Here's how the conversation went. Vaughan: We're going to pit our composite team of the series. Tufnell: Little Ducky is my favourite. Bumble: Duckett and KL Rahul. Vaughan: No, Yashasvi Jaiswal? Tufnell: No, Duckett Rahul for me. Yeah, I'll have him. Just for the punch up. He's always there. He's always there, isn't he, Little Ducky? Who are you having? He's always there. Vaughan: I do like Duckett. Cook: No, Ducky's definitely in. Depends if we want two... Well, I... Smashing, like, as in, like... Attacking left-hander will go one and one. 'The greatest bowler I have ever seen doesn't get in the team!!' Who would make your England v India team of the series? — Stick to Cricket (@StickToCricket) August 11, 2025 Vaughan: Well, can we... Can we have Yashasvi at number three? You've just mentioned three openers. Can we have... If not, who's going to bat at three? Tufnell: Well, hold on a minute. We've got to get Shudman, Gill, Root and Brook in there. They're bankers. And Stokes. Yeah, and Stokes at six. Bumble: We can't have them all there. We can't have them all. Cook: No, Shubman Gill can back three, can't he? Let's go Gill at three, Root four, Brook five. Vaughan: No, Yashasvi? Tufnell: Let's just get them down and we can slot them in afterwards. Bumble: He doesn't get in. Sorry, mate. Vaughan: Well, Root... Shubman Gill and Root four and five, yeah? Cook: Yeah, three and four. Vaughan: Three and four? Cook: I don't know how else you get them all in. Bumble: Well, Stokes at six. Captain. Vaughan: Rishabh Pan at seven. Yeah, all right, that's the keeper. Bumble: Jadeja eight. Tufnell: Jadeja eight. Cook: Oh, you reckon? Well, I'm just thinking, mate. Vaughan: What about Washington Sundar 's offspin with his drift? Cook: Are you going with Jadeja? You've got six wickets, 150, didn't he? Vaughan: Well, Siraj at 11. All agreeing: Yeah. Siraj 11. Let's go Siraj. Yeah. Bumble: Gus Atkinson! Cook: He's only played one game. Tufnell: I'm going to throw one in there as a bowler… Josh Tongue. Vaughan: 19 wickets. Only played three matches. Big fella, the hoover. Hoover's up the tail. Cook: I'm just trying to think of who else. Are we having Bumrah? Tufnell: Oh, I forgot that (laughs). Vaughan: Well, I have him as the greatest I've seen, but... He's the greatest bowler I've ever seen. In this series, I can't have him in. Because he's played two games and they haven't won. Bumble: Let's get this straight. The greatest bowler I have ever seen doesn't get in the team.

Michael Vaughan explains why Ollie Pope is a brilliant vice-captain but not a captain, says he can't have him walk in as skipper in Ashes if Ben Stokes can't play
Former England player Michael Vaughan said that while Ollie Pope was a good vice-captain, he was not cut out to be the England captain. Vaughan pointed out that Pope was not a natural leader which made it difficult for him to have that influence on that team in the 5th Test vs India. With the Ashes coming up in 3 months, Vaughan said that he feels that Harry Brook can take up the captain's mantle if regular skipper Ben Stokes couldn't play. 'We don't laud how good some vice-captains are. (Marcus) Trescothick was the best vice captain. I think Ollie Pope is a brilliant vice-captain. But he's not a captain. And by giving him the captaincy, I can see it a mile off. He's not a natural leader out in the middle. I saw that last year against Sri Lanka. I have seen it again this week. Say you get to Perth and Ben Stokes, the shoulder or you know, his body's in bits. Anything could happen with Ben. Fingers crossed he's fine but just say you go to Perth and Ben can't play. I can't have Ollie Pope walk in as skipper. But I can have Harry Brook because I see a natural leader,' Vaughan said in the Stick To Cricket podcast. 'He's a brilliant vice captain… but he's not a captain' ‼️ Do you agree with Michael Vaughan on Ollie Pope? — Stick to Cricket (@StickToCricket) August 8, 2025 Pope was named captain in the 5th and final Test match of the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy after Stokes had to pull out due to injury. This led to India giving a terrific fightback in the 4th innings, clinching the match by 6 runs and drawing the series 2-2. 'We took as long as we could to make the decision,' Stokes had said. 'I came down [to the Oval] this morning to give myself every chance just to play as a batter – bowling was ruled out as soon as we got the scan results. It's one of those where weighing up the risk and reward, the risk was way too high. Hearing where it could head to, it wasn't something that was worth taking a risk on. I wouldn't expect to put any of my players at risk of an injury like this. So I'll start rehabbing now and focus on what we've got coming up in the winter. Once this series was done I was feet up anyway, so it doesn't make too much difference,' Stokes had said ahead of the match at the Oval.

‘I thought it was diabolical': Michael Vaughan explains why he felt sorry for Jacob Bethell at the Oval vs India
Former England player Michael Vaughan said that England had made a tactical mistake in playing a rather inexperienced Jacob Bethell in the 5th Test at the Oval against India. England went into the 5th Test with a host of absentees with captain Ben Stokes as well as pacers Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse and ultimately lost the Oval test to India by 6 runs in a thrilling match with the series ending all square at 2-2. 'I felt sorry for him. He's 21 years of age. I don't care who you were and Cooky (Alastair Cook) was 21. You'd got probably 4 or 5 first class hundreds by then maybe. Well, you probably got your 1st Test hundred by then. But you'd played a lot of cricket and when you came into the England side, and I know you got called into Nagpur and you went out there straight away and did well but you'd played a lot of cricket so in your body, in your mind, you knew how to bat. you knew your game,' Vaughan said on the Stick to Cricket podcast. 'Jacob Bethell, this summer has faced 67 balls in red ball cricket, he scored 32 runs. And I know they have to have players there for concussion these days so you need a spare batter at the ground in case someone gets it on the head. But surely, if you are trying to develop a young cricketer, you've got to give him time to go there and play cricket. So if it does come that he has to play, at least he has had a bit of game time. To throw a kid who's 21 out at the Oval in front of 27k when the series is on the line on a pitch that is doing plenty against Siraj. I thought it was diabolical. I thought it was unfair on the player,' he added. 'I felt sorry for him!' 😤 Michael Vaughan thinks England we're wrong to select Jacob Bethell for the final test against India 🏏 — Stick to Cricket (@StickToCricket) August 7, 2025 Bethell ended up scoring just 5 and 6 runs in the two innings he played at the Oval falling to Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna respectively. England suffered a collapse and lost a match they were in control of as India pulled off a miracle. Siraj was adjudged man of the match after he picked up 9 wickets, stepping up in the absence of India's premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

Ravi Shastri reveals the 10-figure incomes of cricket icons MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar
In a candid chat with former England players on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Ravi Shastri left the room stunned by pulling back the curtain on what India's cricketing elite truly make off the field. While fans are often aware of match fees and IPL contracts, Shastri brought up the staggering sums that come from brand endorsements. According to the cricket commentator, legends like Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Sachin Tendulkar each pull in over INR 100 crore, approximately EUR 10 million, every year through endorsements alone. 'Upwards of Rs 100 crore' from endorsements Shastri, speaking to Michael Vaughan, Sir Alastair Cook, David Lloyd and Phil Tufnell, emphasized that cricket in India offers commercial opportunities rivaling global football stars. 'They earn a lot. A lot through endorsements,' he said. When pressed for specifics, he broke it down bluntly: 'Upwards of 100 crores. Which would say 10 million pounds.' The calculation—roughly one pound to 100 rupees—sparked audible surprise among the English panel. Shastri then reiterated that this figure could be even higher in some cases, given the sheer scale of the Indian market. No time to do more, even at that rate According to Shastri, Indian cricket's top-tier stars are so busy that their endorsement opportunities are limited not by demand, but by time. 'Someone like an MS, or a Virat, or Sachin in his pomp... they would do over 15-20 ads. And it's per day,' he explained, 'There's no time; they could easily do more.' That intense scheduling pressure, combined with relentless on-field commitments, prevents even more commercial work, despite potentially higher paydays. 'They'll do an ad for a year… and give a day for the shoot, that's all you'll get. And then you play it out as many times as you want,' he stated, explaining just how massive cricket's commercial engine is in India.
