New York Giants bolster offensive line in 3-team trade proposal

New York Giants bolster offensive line in 3-team trade proposal

USA Today5 hours ago

The New York Giants will enter a crucial season relying heavily on an offensive line that needs to stay healthy.
While injuries are unpredictable, the Giants managed to add some depth to the offensive line this offseason. General manager Joe Schoen signed offensive tackles James Hudson III and Stone Forsythe in free agency while adding Marcus Mbow in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft.
Even with those additions, the Giants haven't had the benefit of injury luck over the last few seasons. When looking at potential three-team trades that would shake up the NFL, Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski included New York in a proposed deal that certainly fits the bill.
In his three-team trade pitch, the Giants send edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for Arizona Cardinals offensive tackle Jonah Williams. Miami would send wide receiver Tyreek Hill to Arizona in this scenario.
Arizona would have to send a proven blocker to the New York Giants to make a deal happen in this scenario. They have suffered through multiple false starts trying to rebuild their offensive line. Despite multiple high investments in the position group, it's still not quite where it should be.
Williams has the potential to slide into right tackle and complete the fivesome, while the ever-reliable Kelvin Beachum Jr. holds down the fort on Arizona's strong side.
To fully entice the Dolphins and make all of this happen, the Giants move Kayvon Thibodeaux thanks to the depth they now have among their pass-rushers after selecting Abdul Carter with this year's third overall draft pick. While New York plans to keep Thibodeaux in the short term, he's not likely to remain with the team beyond the 2026 campaign when his rookie deal is complete.
This would be a massive change for the Giants' roster. They would be trading from a position of strength with their defensive line after adding Abdul Carter with the No. 3 overall pick in the draft.
Williams, the former first-round pick with the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2019 draft, has struggled mostly to live up to his draft capital, allowing an average of 39 total pressures per season when he was the starter in Cincinnati from 2020-2023, per Pro Football Focus.
The Giants currently have Jermaine Eluemunor manning the right tackle position as he enters the final year of his contract. He's a versatile player, so he could slide inside to right guard if needed, but the right tackle position is his best spot.
It's that time of the offseason when we're simply waiting for football to return, so it's unlikely a deal like this gets done. But it does highlight the need for the Giants' offensive line to step up in 2025.

What's the Cardinals' ceiling with Kyler Murray under center?

Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz, Jori Epstein and Frank Schwab discuss the outlook this season for Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals. Hear the full conversation on 'Inside Coverage' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript 8 and 9 last year, over under 8.5. Advertisement The Cardinals uh mired in the sea of mediocrity usually. Where are you, Joey, today on the Cardinals versus a year ago right now on the Cardinals? I feel like I just don't think about the Cardinal Cardinals much. Maybe that's like an obnoxious national reporter thing to say, but I would say I think that retreat because I feel like a couple of years ago we did feel like, hey, they've got, or not a couple of years, like a couple of years ago they had. They were only winning 4 games, but it's kind of like, oh, but you kind of could see what the plan was that they were doing. Then they get Marvin Harrison Junior last year and you're like, well, now Kyler might have the guy, and they still had a losing record. Advertisement And so I, I just have a lot of questions about can they put all the pieces together I felt like they had the pieces last year that they should be able to take that big jump, and they didn't, and I don't think that their division is going to make it any easier now that the Rams are actually quite strong, and I will get to them. I'm just kind of, I guess, repeat on the Cardinals. They're one of those teams that. It's just they're just kind of stuck in the middle. Like, I don't see there being a higher ceiling for them. Now, I will say this, Jonathan Gannon, I think is a really, really good defensive coach, and he hasn't had much talent, so what do they do this offseason? Advertisement They pounded the draft, even free agency, defense, defense, defense. I think the defense is going to be a lot better than it has been the last couple of years, but my question is Kyler Murray, what's his ceiling really? What's his team ceiling with him? It's not like Kyler Murray hasn't played a lot of games already. He's played a lot and just kind of been One of those quarterbacks who's OK, he's fine, but he didn't get the most out of Marvin Harrison last year. He didn't really elevate this offense like I thought he would. I thought Kyler Murray coming back from the ACL, he played really well late two seasons ago, 2023 season. Advertisement I thought, OK, 2024, he's gonna have a really big season. Again, Marvin Harrison's there, he's and it just didn't happen, and now you get to a point in Kyler Murray's career where you just wonder, is this it, this is as far as we're gonna go with Kyler Murray. I think the Cardinals are gonna be slightly better, like, they did approve a lot last year, especially in the win loss column, but kind of to Joy's point, it's one of those improvements where you're like, uh, do I really think the next step is gonna be 10 wins, 12 wins? I don't. I, I think they're gonna be just kind of slightly better, we're gonna get to the end of the year, kind of just say, this is what the Cardinals are, they're gonna be hovering around 500, they're gonna be OK, but really, I just don't see there being another big step for them with this core.

Giants' Hayden Birdsong plunks Otto Lopez in finale of combative series against Marlins

SAN FRANCISCO — Right-hander Logan Webb hinted Wednesday night that Giants pitchers were prepared to enforce frontier justice after watching their teammates get hit by a spate of inside pitches. It didn't take long for Hayden Birdsong to sound a gavel. Birdsong threw a first-pitch fastball that hit Miami Marlins No. 3 batter Otto Lopez with two outs in the first inning Thursday afternoon. Umpires converged and issued warnings to both benches. That apparently wasn't good enough for Marlins manager Clayton McCullough, who argued until he was ejected by plate umpire Alfonso Márquez. The Marlins did not retaliate in the bottom of the first inning; they'd already gotten the sweetest revenge against Birdsong. Agustín Ramírez followed Lopez's plunking with a double and Kyle Stowers hit a home run to give the Marlins a quick 3-0 lead. It would be difficult for the Giants to argue that Birdsong's pitch lacked intent. A night earlier, several Giants players expressed frustration with what's become a concentration of hit batters on this nine-game homestand. Hot-hitting third baseman Casey Schmitt, who was struck on the left hand by Marlins closer Calvin Faucher in the ninth inning Wednesday night, was not in the lineup Thursday. Although initial X-rays did not conclusively show a fracture, the Giants sent Schmitt for a CT scan and will reevaluate him. Advertisement Giants left fielder Heliot Ramos, who was hit twice in 600 major league plate appearances entering this year, has been struck by pitches three times on this homestand and 10 times this season. 'I feel like the game finds a way to even itself out. And it will,' Webb said after Wednesday's game. 'It's starting to get frustrating (with) how many guys are getting hit. As pitchers, we've got to do a better job protecting those guys.' How would the pitchers respond? 'Baseball finds a way of working something out,' Webb said. 'Hopefully there's a little bit of edge tomorrow because of some of the stuff that happened today. Hope we come out with a lot of energy.' If the umpiring crew was aware of Webb's comments, they weren't proactive about Thursday. No warnings were issued prior to the game when Webb represented the Giants by taking out the lineup card.
