Six of the best as Spain sweep aside Belgium at Euros

Striker Alexia Putellas scored twice for world champions Spain as they shook off a slow start to beat Belgium 6-2 in their Women's Euros Group B clash.
Putellas blasted Spain into the lead on Monday, picking up the ball after some deft one-touch passing and lashing it into the net in the 22nd minute with a powerful left-foot shot.
The Belgians soon equalised when Justine Vanhaevermaet headed home at the near post but, despite struggling to maintain a consistent rhythm, Spain still managed to take a lead into the break after Irene Paredes scored with a towering header from a corner in the 39th minute.
Belgium levelled again in the 50th minute, with Hannah Eurlings running on to a long ball and slotting home.
Belgium's joy was short-lived as Esther Gonzalez restored Spain's lead a minute later.
Mariona Caldentey's fourth goal for Spain in the 61st minute put them at ease, before a brilliant curled effort from Claudia Pina in the 81st minute effectively ended the contest.
There was still time for Putellas to net her second goal four minutes from time to put Spain top of the group on six points and leave the Belgians, who lost their opening game against Italy 1-0, on the brink of elimination.
In Geneva, a last-gasp equaliser by Portugal's Diana Gomes in a thrilling 1-1 draw with Italy kept her country's campaign alive, her strike cancelling out a stunning second-half goal by Cristiana Girelli.
Le Azzurre thought they were through to the quarter-finals after Girelli scored in the 70th minute, shifting the ball to her right foot at the edge of the box before unleashing a curling shot into the top right corner.
But Gomes brought Portugal level in the 89th minute when a corner hit the bar and the Portuguese worked the ball back into the box for Gomes to fire home.
The draw spoiled Italy's chance of clinching a berth in the knockout round, with Spain the only Group B team to have so far guaranteed a quarter-final spot with their 6-2 win over Belgium.

Hauser boosts triathlon dominance with Hamburg win

Matt Hauser has successfully defended his Hamburg title in the World Triathlon Championships Series, extending his lead in the WTCS rankings and securing his fourth podium in four races this year. The 27-year-old Australian produced a trademark surge in the closing run leg to win Saturday's race by seven seconds. Hauser started strongly in the swim leg and was just behind the Alghero WTCS winner Miguel Hidalgo heading into the six-lap bike ride. Despite a couple of competitors crashing in the wet conditions, Hauser was able to transition into the final 5km run in the front pack. With 800m to go in the race, Hauser broke away from Portuguese rival Vasco Vilaça to take the tape and the gold medal to further cement his number one position. "I had an amazing time out there, executed the race exactly how I wanted," said Hauser. "In contrast to last year's win, I was first out of transition and it felt really great. With only Vasco sticking around for the last lap, I knew I had to play it smart and attack him before the finish. "A dream to go back-to-back on this iconic course." Up next in the series is Saint Raphael-Frejus on the French Riviera on August 31 as Hauser also eyes a glorious finale at the WTC Finals in Wollongong in October. Liverpool honour 'champion' Jota in return to action at Preston

Diogo Jota was hailed "a champion" on Sunday by Liverpool manager Arne Slot as the Reds returned to the field for the first time since the Portuguese's death in a pre-season friendly at Preston. Father of three Jota, who married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso 11 days before the accident, died alongside his brother Andre Silva on July 3 after their car came off the road and burst into flames in northern Spain. A rendition of Liverpool's anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone" was played before kick-off at Deepdale and Preston captain Ben Whiteman laid a wreath in front of the away supporters. A minute's silence was then observed and both teams wore black armbands. "I think what I take comfort in is that in the last month of his life he was a champion in everything," Slot said in an interview ahead of the match. "A champion for his family, which is the main and most important thing, because he got married. "A champion for his country because he won the Nations League with a country that he cared about so much, because he also wore the flag when we had celebrations. "And of course a champion for us by winning the Premier League." Mohamed Salah was among the Liverpool starting line-up and captain for the day as other first-team stars such as Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson were left out of the playing squad but were still in attendance. Multiple renditions of Jota's song, proclaiming him to be better than Portugal legend Figo, were belted out by the Liverpool support before a ball was even kicked. In the crowd, flags emblazoned with "forever our number 20" paid tribute to the man from just outside Porto, who died at just 28. Liverpool announced on Friday that the club will retire Jota's number 20 in his memory. Earlier this week Slot and his wife joined several players in attending the tributes that have appeared to Jota and his brother outside Anfield. "We will always carry him with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go," added Slot. "Nothing seems to be important if we think of what has happened. It's very difficult to find the right words because we constantly debate what is appropriate. "I've said to them (the players), maybe the best thing for us to do is handle this situation like Jota was. "And what I meant with that is that Jota was always himself.
