At least 9 killed, many abducted in ‘bandit' gang attack in Nigeria
The deadly attack on Friday took place in Zamfara state, the epicentre of attacks by heavily armed men known locally as bandits who have been wreaking havoc across Nigeria's northwest in recent years, kidnapping thousands, killing hundreds and making it unsafe to travel by road.
Hamisu Faru, a local lawmaker, confirmed the attack to the Reuters news agency, saying the assailants took 'no fewer than 100 people, including women and children'.
'As I'm speaking to you right now, they are searching house-to-house, abducting people,' Faru said by phone.
Yahaya Yari Abubakar, political administrator of Talata Mafara district, where the attack was carried out, told the AFP news agency that nine people were killed in total and at least 15 local people were abducted.
Abu Zaki, a resident of the district's Jangebe village, said the victims included the head of the village's vigilante self-defence group and his five colleagues, along with three residents.
'Everybody is now afraid of going to the farm for fear of being attacked,' said another resident, Bello Ahmadu, who corroborated the reported death toll.Jangebe village was the scene in 2021 of the mass abduction of almost 300 female students from a boarding school. The girls were freed days later after authorities made a ransom payment.
Another resident in the area, Mohammed Usman, told Reuters that the attackers laid siege to the town for nearly two hours before taking their captives. Thousands of residents have now fled the village, he said.
Zamfara police did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
Nigeria's bandits maintain camps in a huge forest straddling Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna and Niger states, in unrest that has evolved from clashes between herders and farmers over land and resources into a broader conflict fuelled by arms trafficking.
Zamfara's state government has recruited vigilantes and armed militias to assist the military in fighting the bandits.
Last month, vigilantes, with the aid of Nigeria's secret police, killed about 100 people when they raided the enclave of a gang kingpin in the state's Shinkafi district, according to officials.

Mexico: Veracruz prison riot leaves 7 dead
A prison riot in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz led to 7 people dead and 11 others wounded, regional authorities said Sunday. What do we know so far? The riot broke out at the Taxpan prison in the city of the same name. Videos circulating on social media showed fires at the penal facility and plumes of smoke rising from the prison grounds. "As a result of the riot, we report the tragic deaths of seven inmates and 11 injured people," the Department of Public Security of Veracruz said in a statement. Police and security forces intervened to quell the unrest at the prison. The riot reportedly broke out on Saturday after inmates expressed anger over extortion and abuse by members of the Grupo Sombra criminal organization at the prison. A 2012 report by Mexico's human rights commission found that six out of 10 Mexican prisons are controlled by either prison gangs or drug cartels. Mexican prisons also face other issues such as overcrowding and corruption. The Tuxpan prison had 778 inmates in June, exceeding the 735 prisoners it was designed to hold. Who is Grupo Sombra? According to Mexican newspaper Milenio, Grupo Sombra made its first public appearance in 2017, when its hitmen gave frozen turkeys and soda to residents in Veracruz for Christmas that year. Armed masked men forced women to smile for the camera and men had to give a thumbs up in a photo posted online to show gratitude for the "gift." More recently, Grupo Sombra was linked to the femicide of a 65-year-old retired teacher in July. Milenio reported that Grupo Sombra consider themselves a splinter group of the Gulf Cartel, and that they aim to fight the Los Zetas syndicate and Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in Veracruz. Grupo Sombra also claim to engage in social work that the Mexican government doesn't do. Edited by: Rana Taha

Boise store employee beat up during burglary, retaliates with gunfire, police say
Law enforcement arrested three suspects after a burglary turned violent Saturday night in Boise. Officers responded to reports of gunshots shortly after 9:30 p.m. at a business on the 6300 block of West Fairview Avenue in Boise, according to a Boise Police Department news release. Police said evidence indicated that an 18-year-old Boise woman entered the business and began to steal alcohol when an employee confronted her and told her to leave. 'She then approached the employee and punched him in the face,' police said. 'A physical altercation between the two occurred before two additional suspects…entered the store. They also began assaulting the employee, who was on the ground.' The two additional suspects were an 18-year-old Boise man and a juvenile. 'The employee was repeatedly punched, kicked, and stomped on as he remained on the ground, backed into a corner of the store,' police said. The employee then pulled out a gun and shot at the suspects, striking the man, according to the release. Police said the three suspects then escaped the scene in a vehicle. The employee received treatment at a local hospital for treatment of 'serious but non-life-threatening injuries,' police said. After locating the suspects' vehicle near the intersection of North Curtis Road and West Irving Street, law enforcement found the three suspects inside. They transported the man to a hospital for treatment of a single gunshot wound, according to the release. The three suspects were each booked in the Ada County Jail on a felony charge of aggravated assault. The woman also received a misdemeanor for commercial burglary.

Pittsburgh police looking for "person of interest" in Downtown shooting
Pittsburgh police are looking for a suspect in connection with Friday's shooting in Downtown Pittsburgh. Police released photos of the man they're looking for, and they're asking for the public's help in order to locate and identify him. He's being called a person of interest. The shooting, which took place in the area of Penn Avenue and Garrison Place, left two people injured. Penn Avenue was closed as police investigated. A woman was shot on the sidewalk in the lower leg, while a man was shot in the arm and the leg. He was located a block away. Police say the suspect ran down Garrison Place toward Liberty Avenue. "No one wants to see violence of any kind in our neighborhoods, especially acts that put lives at risk," Mayor Ed Gainey said, in part, in a statement. "Let me be clear: there is no place for this kind of behavior in our city." If you have any information, you are asked to contact Pittsburgh police.
