Islam Makhachev: Charles Oliveira has 'big chance' to upset Ilia Topuria at UFC 317

USA Today5 hours ago

Islam Makhachev thinks sees the UFC 317 main event between Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira as a coin toss.
Topuria and Oliveira will fight for the vacant lightweight title left behind by Makhachev in his move to welterweight when they meet in Saturday's headliner at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+).
Makhachev will be watching closely to see who begins the next era at 155 pounds, but former featherweight champ Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) enters as the heavy betting favorite over Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC), who held the belt previously.
"It depends who can follow his game plan," Makhachev told MMA Junkie. "If Charles can take him down, he can finish him easy on the ground. Or, if Topuria can catch him, he's going to sleep. It's two options. Who is going to make the game plan work?"
Of the two, Makhachev has only shared the octagon with Oliveira. He submitted the Brazilian in a dominant performance for his first UFC title win in October 2022, and since then "Do Bronx" has won two of thee fights.
The undefeated record, punching power and stellar technique of Topuria can't be underestimated, but Makhachev sees traits from Oliveira that could open up his path to victory.
"(Oliveira has a) big chance," Makhachev said. "He always fights good against strikers. He has good striking. Against (Dustin) Poirier he fought good, against (Michael) Chandler he fought good – both have good punch, both very good at stand up. But if you give him small chance, he's going to finish. That's why Charles is always dangerous. So I'll go 50/50."
Although Topuria vs. Oliveira is one of the more anticipated matchups of the 2025 UFC schedule thus far, Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) couldn't help but take a jab at two men he's had contentious moments with in the past.
"I feel bad, man – nobody speak about International Fight Week," Makhachev joked. "Nobody speak about main event."

Big men headed to 'Big Easy': Lukasz Brzeski vs. Ryan Spann set for UFC 318 in New Orleans

The UFC's return to "The Big Easy" continues to build with a little lagniappe at heavyweight. A bout between big men Lukasz Brzeski (9-6-1 MMA, 1-5 UFC) and Ryan Spann (22-11 MMA, 8-6 UFC) has been added to UFC 318 next month. A person with knowledge of the matchup confirmed the fight to MMA Junkie, but asked to remain anonymous because the UFC has not yet made a formal announcement of the fight. UFC 318 takes place July 19 at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. The card features a trilogy bout between the retiring local Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway for the BMF title. Spann will try to bounce back from a second-round TKO loss to Waldo Cortes-Acosta in March. That setback was his fourth in five fights, but also his first at heavyweight after years at 205 pounds. His final bout at light heavyweight, though, was a bonus-winning submission of Ovince St. Preux at UFC 307. Brzeski has a recent TKO loss to Cortes-Acosta on his resume, too. But after that 2023 setback, he bounced back with a win over Valter Walker – which stands as his only win in the UFC. The 33-year-old Polish fighter got into the UFC through a DWCS win that was flipped to a no contest for a failed drug test, and once in, he's struggled with losses in five of six fights. With the addition, the UFC 318 lineup now includes:

Kevin Holland's crazy pace continues with Daniel Rodriguez booking at UFC 318

Kevin Holland said he wanted to stay busy this year, and he'll do just that. Holland (28-13 MMA, 15-10 UFC) has been booked for a welterweight fight against Daniel Rodriguez (19-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC) next month at UFC 318, which takes place July 19 at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. The card features a trilogy bout between the retiring local Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway for the BMF title. MMA Junkie confirmed the matchup with a person with knowledge of the fight, and Holland confirmed the booking on social media. The UFC has not yet made a formal announcement of the bout, which first surfaced on social media. The two were booked to fight at UFC 279 nearly three years ago, but a weigh-in day abnormality pushed Holland into a new fight with Khamzat Chimaev, which he lost, and Rodriguez into a new fight with Jingliang Li, which he won. Holland has fought three times already this calendar year. In the UFC's first event of 2025, he was submitted by promotional newcomer Reinier de Ridder, a former two-division ONE Championship titleholder. But in March, he rebounded with a bonus-winning decision over Gunnar Nelson, and earlier this month he submitted Vicente Luque at UFC 316 for a second straight bonus. Rodriguez has bounced back from a rough patch of three straight losses to Neil Magny, Ian Machado Garry and Kelvin Gastelium with a decision win over Alex Morono this past fall and a third-round knockout of Santiago Ponzinibbio in May. That was his first stoppage win in nearly four years. With the addition, the UFC 318 lineup now includes:

Ilia Topuria seeks to join elite UFC company when he meets Charles Oliveira for lightweight title

Associated Press LAS VEGAS (AP) — Former featherweight champion Ilia Topuria will enter the octagon for potentially the biggest fight of his career on Saturday, when he faces former lightweight titleholder Charles Oliveira for the vacant UFC lightweight championship. Just don't tell him that. 'I don't know what to tell you, it feels exactly the same to be honest,' Topuria said with a coy smile during Wednesday's media availability. Topuria (16-0) moves up to the 155-pound weight class for UFC 317 following a successful 2024 at featherweight. He claimed that belt with a second-round knockout of Alexander Volkanovski and defended his title by finishing Max Holloway in the third round of their October bout in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The 28-year-old dual citizen of Georgia and Spain, ranked fourth on UFC's pound-for-pound list, now moves up a division hungry to win another belt and join nine others who have held a UFC belt in two weight classes. 'I think that I am a better fighter right now,' Topuria said. 'More mature, more experienced. You're going to see, for sure, a better version of myself. "When I was fighting in the featherweight division at this point, I was feeling really, really bad. I think I made a great decision. This is one of the best training camps that I've ever had.' Topuria, who is heavily favored with -550 odds at BetMGM Sportsbook, has registered eight wins by submission, including six by knockout, and has nine first-round finishes to his credit. Oliveira (35-10) will also be searching for history, as he looks to become the first fighter to win the lightweight belt on separate occasions. Last year, he lost a tough-luck decision to Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300 before bouncing back with a decision win over Michael Chandler at UFC 309 in New York City. The victory moved him into a three-way tie with Donald Cerrone and Andrei Arlovski for the second-most wins in UFC history. Oliveira, who has the most finishes in UFC history, has scored 21 victories by submission, including 10 via knockout. Despite his longevity in the sport, the 35-year-old Brazilian said he hasn't changed his approach. 'A guy that continues to be thirsty, a guy who is hungry for the win,' said Oliveira, the No. 2-ranked UFC lightweight contender. 'Yeah, he is younger, comes in undefeated. But does he want it more than I do, does he have more hunger and more thirst than I have? 'This is for my legacy, this is for my history. I'm ready for this fight.' In the co-main event, flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja (29-5) and Kai Kara-France (25-11) will meet for a second time, nine years after their quarterfinal clash on the reality show 'The Ultimate Fighter.' Pantoja won the first meeting by unanimous decision. This time, the winner will leave the octagon with the flyweight belt. Pantoja, who carries a seven-fight win streak, won the title two years ago, beating Brandon Moreno by decision. Since then, the 35-year-old Brazilian has defended the title three times, most recently at UFC 310 in December against Kai Asakura. Kara-France, 32, is hoping to make the most of his second opportunity at a UFC title after falling short against Moreno when the two battled for the interim flyweight title at UFC 277. Kara-France, the fourth-ranked flyweight contender, has 12 wins by knockout and three by submission. ___ AP sports:
