A female European tourist has been sentenced to one month in jail for shoplifting a designer handbag valued at Dh7,000 from a luxury retail store in a Dubai mall. After serving her prison sentence, she will be deported from the UAE.
According to court records, the theft was brought to light when a vigilant shop attendant noticed the disappearance of the handbag shortly after a group of five individuals, consisting of one man and four women, entered the store posing as customers.
The store employee explained that the group engaged him in conversation, ostensibly asking about product prices to distract him. 'The group engaged him in conversation under the pretext of asking about product prices,' the report stated.
Suspecting something was amiss, the employee reviewed the in-store surveillance footage after the group left. The video revealed the theft in clear detail: one of the women discreetly grabbed the high-value handbag while the others distracted the staff. The coordinated distraction and swift execution indicated a deliberate and premeditated shoplifting attempt.
Dubai Police acted promptly upon receiving the report.

A criminal investigation team reviewed the surveillance footage, successfully tracked down the suspect, and arrested her. During interrogation, the woman confessed to the crime, admitting she took the handbag while visiting the mall with her siblings.
Following her arrest, the woman was referred to the Misdemeanour Court, which found her guilty of shoplifting. She was sentenced to one month in prison, after which she will be deported.
Dubai Police reiterated their firm stance on retail theft, emphasizing that shoplifting is a criminal offense with serious consequences, regardless of the item's value or the offender's nationality or background. This case underscores the commitment of Dubai authorities to maintain law and order and protect retailers and consumers alike.

Online Gaming Bill: Cricket industry's revenue could be hit due to proposed ban on real money gaming

The 'Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 ', which was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, could spell the end of "real money gaming platforms", that have stakes in the sponsorship market of Indian sports, most significantly cricket. The contents of the bill, which aims to regulate one of the fastest growing industries, is music to the ears for the Esports fraternity in the country. But the multi-billion dollar fantasy gaming industry comprising companies that have spent big money in sponsorship of cricket might see a marked dip in their revenues. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Launch your PM career IITD PM Apply Now And as a chain reaction, it could also affect the sports sponsorship market, including individual players' sponsorship and franchise-based domestic leagues of disciplines like kabaddi and football. The Online gaming regulation bill looks to create a regulatory body that will look after four diverse segments -- Esports, educational gaming, social and casual gaming and real money gaming. Live Events Of these, there will be restrictions on online money games, states the document which is in possession of PTI. As per "PROHIBITIONS" clause: "No person shall offer, aid, abet, induce or otherwise indulge or engage in the offering of online money game and online money gaming service. "No bank, financial institution, or any other person facilitating financial transactions or authorisation of funds shall engage in, permit, aid, abet, induce or otherwise facilitate any transaction or authorisation of funds towards payment for any online money gaming service." The "OFFENCES AND PENALTIES" clause clearly terms real money gaming as a criminal offence which could lead to jail and humongous fine for the service provider. Clause 9. (1) reads "Any person who offers online money gaming service in contravention of section 5 shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years or with fine which may extend to one crore rupees or with both. Clause 9. (2) reads: "Any person who makes or causes to make advertisement in any media, in contravention of section 6, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or with fine which may extend to fifty lakh rupees or with both. The government makes it clear that real money gaming is leading to a lot of social problems and it needs some kind of regulation. "....the parallel proliferation of online money games accessible through mobile phones, computers and the internet, and offering monetary returns against user deposits has led to serious social, financial, psychological and public health harms, particularly among young individuals and economically disadvantaged groups; "...such games often use manipulative design features, addictive algorithms, bots and undisclosed agents, undermining fairness, transparency and user protection, while promoting compulsive behaviour leading to financial ruin." Implications of the Bill =============== Cricket is one sport which has seen a huge influx of real money gaming with Indian team's title sponsor being Dream 11. My11Circle is the official fantasy sports partner of the money-spinning Indian Premier League. Dream11 brought the Indian team's title rights for about USD 44 million (Rs 358 crore approx). My11Circle brought IPL fantasy gaming rights for a fee of Rs 625 crore for five years (Rs 125 crore approx annually). Add to this the country's top cricketers -- former as well as current -- have hefty personal endorsement deals with various real money gaming platforms. Noted sports lawyer Vidushpat Singhania, who has a deep understanding of the subject, explained the consequences in a nutshell. "Cricket is huge in India and there won't be any dearth of sponsors for Indian cricket and its properties. However, personal sponsorship market can shrink because of this bill. "Also fan engagement will be affected," Singhania told PTI. He, however, explained that fantasy games can still run a subscription based model. "There will be a subscription fee and say you pay Rs 100 for a gaming app and test your skills in fantasy gaming. But real money gaming which is paying and earning money, that is prohibited as per this bill." The gigantic revenue stream of all these fantasy gaming apps will certainly diminish due to the ban and hence money flowing back into the sport will decrease markedly. Joy for Esports Market ============== Esports made its debut at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023 and the International Olympic Committee will be conducting its first Esport Olympics in Riyadh in 2027. Sharing his thoughts on this development, Akshat Rathee, Co-founder and Managing Director of NODWIN Gaming, says, "The government's intent to recognise and promote esports, as highlighted in the recent bill, is an encouraging step towards building a structured and globally competitive ecosystem. "However, for this vision to truly materialise, it is critical that the terminology used in the bill, particularly the distinctions between esports, online gaming, online social gaming, and online money gaming be clearly defined and uniformly understood."

Parliament Monsoon Session: Congress' questions 'morality' of BJP over bills to remove PM, CMs and ministers; Amit Shah replies 'I resigned before being arrested'

NEW DELHI: Union minister Amit Shah called the charges, once brought against him, "false" on Wednesday, asserting that he adhered to constitutional principles by resigning from his post before his arrest. His remarks came during a heated exchange over the "Bill" that Shah tabled in the Lok Sabha, in response to Congress leader KC Venugopal's query about his 2010 arrest during Parliament's monsoon session. The discussion occurred shortly after Shah introduced three bills in the Lower House, including the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025. This bill proposes the removal of the Prime Minister or chief ministers facing corruption or serious offence charges if they remain in detention for 30 consecutive days. Additionally, the home minister tabled the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025. The latter seeks to amend section 54 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, to allow for the removal of a chief minister or minister in the event of arrest or detention on serious criminal charges. During the session, Congress MP KC Venugopal questioned, 'This bill is meant to sabotage the basic principles of the Constitution. BJP members are saying that this bill is to bring morality into politics. Can I ask the home minister a question? When he was the home minister of Gujarat, he was arrested – did he uphold morality at that time?' Responding sharply, Shah stated, 'Now listen to me, I want to clear the record. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo False charges were levelled against me. I had resigned before being arrested out of a moral responsibility. And I didn't take up any post until I was acquitted by the courts...' Shah further requested Speaker Om Birla to refer the three bills to a Joint Committee of the Houses consisting of 21 members of the Lok Sabha and 10 members of the Rajya Sabha to be nominated by the Speaker and the deputy chairman, respectively. In July 2010, then Gujarat minister of state for home Amit Shah was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the alleged fake encounter of gangster Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kauser Bi, and associate Tulsiram Prajapati. The agency implicated him in a conspiracy, presenting phone records and other evidence. Shah resigned from his ministerial position prior to the arrest and was remanded to judicial custody at Sabarmati Jail before securing bail later that year. In December 2014, a special CBI court discharged him from all charges due to a lack of evidence.

Every Parliamentarian has raised concerns about its ill effects. Between revenue from one-third of the industry segment and society welfare, the government has chosen society welfare," the source said. According to the source, actions against entities involved in money gaming under the bill will be mainly taken by state governments. The bill proposes that any person offering an online money gaming service in violation of the stipulated provisions will face imprisonment of up to three years or a fine that may extend to Rs 1 crore or both. The provisions also stipulate imprisonment of up to two years and or a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh, or both, for those indulging in advertisements in contravention of rules. Several online real money gaming platforms masquerade themselves as a "game of skills" to differentiate themselves from gambling or betting, the source said. "Those who play the games are victims. They will not be punished as per the bill, but there will be action on those who provide real money gaming platforms, facilitate transaction services, etc," the source said. On the other hand, the bill seeks to promote eSports and online social games, which are a part of the creative economy. "There will be a budget for it, schemes and authority for their promotion. They are two-thirds of the industry. It will create job opportunities for the online gaming industry," the source said. The government has been making efforts for the last three and a half years, which were being bypassed by the real money gaming players, the source added. "The government tried to check it through GST, but it was being bypassed. There was a proposal for a regulatory body, but it was impacted by a conflict of interest. The provisions under the bill were taken after several complaints were received from the public and their representatives," the source said. Meanwhile, industry bodies representing real money game players -- India Gaming Federation (AIGF), E-Gaming Federation (EGF), and Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS) -- in a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah raised concerns over the bill, saying it would kill the job-creating industry. The letter stated that the online skill gaming industry is a "sunrise sector" with an enterprise valuation of over Rs 2 lakh crore and annual revenue exceeding Rs 31,000 crore. It contributes over Rs 20,000 crore in direct and indirect taxes annually and is projected to grow at a 20 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR), doubling by 2028.
