Campers mourn tapir mascot killed near MARDI Cherating Agrotech Park
The incident occurred around 12.10 am when the animal was crossing the road and collided with a Perodua Alza.
Acting Kuantan police chief Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud confirmed the driver, a 41-year-old man, was unharmed.
Authorities quickly secured the scene to manage traffic on the dimly lit road.
The tapir's carcass, weighing over 120 kg, was handed to the Pahang Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan).
Badrol Hisham Mohamad, a local resident, was among the first to arrive and helped alert authorities.
He noted that several motorists stopped to assist in directing traffic due to the carcass blocking the road.
MARDI Cherating Agrotechnology Park expressed grief over the loss in a Facebook post, calling the tapir a cherished attraction for visitors.
'This protected tapir brought joy to campers and nature lovers,' the post read. – Bernama

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The health ministry has issued a stern warning to hospital mortuary staff not to accept any form of payment, gift, or donation in exchange for handling the remains of dead people or providing information about the deceased. In a recent circular sent to all hospitals, the ministry made it clear that accepting money or cooperating with funeral service agents could be seen as corruption. Hospital staff are also barred from giving third parties — especially funeral service companies or their agents – any information about dead people. The ministry said this directive is meant to protect the integrity of mortuary services and ensure that the remains are handed over to families without any interference or misconduct. 'Hospital authorities must make sure no external parties are involved in managing bodies before they are released to the next of kin,' the ministry said. 'Funeral service agents must not be allowed to loiter around mortuary areas.' All dealings with funeral companies must be handled directly by the deceased's family — not through hospital staff recommendations, said the ministry. This comes amid longstanding complaints of funeral agents harassing grieving families at mortuaries and allegedly offering to fast-track the release of remains, sometimes with the help of hospital insiders. These complaints led to a special operation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in May last year in which several suspects were arrested. Five government hospital employees in Seremban were charged in December with 21 counts of bribery related to mortuary services. The bribes ranged from RM600 to RM2,250 and were allegedly received between 2021 and 2024. In a similar case three months earlier, four suspects including a medical assistant attached to Kajang Hospital's forensic unit were also arrested for corruption.

EAIC Reveals Incident Of Client Beaten At PUSPEN In Pahang
PUTRAJAYA, July 14 (Bernama) — The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) has revealed that a client at the Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (PUSPEN) in Pahang was beaten and injured while undergoing rehabilitation there last year. In a statement issued today, the EAIC said it received a complaint regarding the matter, and an investigation was conducted. 'The investigation found there was evidence of the beating incident that caused injuries to the client who was undergoing rehabilitation treatment at the centre. 'There is a possibility of a cover-up by PUSPEN regarding the incident because the notification regarding the injury by the client was made within an unreasonable period to the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) Headquarters,' it said. In this regard, EAIC decided to refer the results of the investigation to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) with a recommendation for a criminal investigation under section 324 of the Penal Code (Act 574) or any related section to be made against the suspects involved. Regarding the elements of concealment by PUSPEN on the incident, EAIC said it will recommend disciplinary action against the officer involved under Regulation 38, Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations 1993 [P.U. (A) 395/1993] for disobeying an order as provided for under Regulation 4(2)(i) of the same regulations. 'In addition, EAIC recommends the installation of closed-circuit cameras within the PUSPEN area to ensure the safety of clients undergoing rehabilitation,' it said. — BERNAMA

KUANTAN, July 14 (Bernama) -- Police issued 194 traffic summonses and seized 24 motorcycles during Op Samseng Jalanan conducted around this city from 4 pm to 11 pm yesterday. Kuantan acting police chief Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the operation followed public complaints over illegal racing and dangerous motorcycle stunts that frequently occur on weekends. 'A total of 65 individuals aged between 15 and 25 were issued summonses for various traffic offences,' he said in a statement today.
