Joyce future in doubt after defeat by Hrgovic
Joe Joyce is facing serious questions about his boxing future following defeat by Filip Hrgovic at Manchester's Co-op Live Arena.Croatian Hrgovic, 32, won by unanimous decision after an absorbing 10-round heavyweight bout against the 39-year-old Joyce.Britain's Joyce, who looked sharp at times but allowed Hrgovic to take charge, has now lost four of his last five fights.Asked if he felt there was still more he could offer boxing, Joyce told DAZN: "Yeah. Are you not entertained?"It was a good fight, it was tough and he's a great fighter."However, his promoter Frank Warren said Joyce needs to have a "real serious think" about his future.
After being rocked early on, Joyce responded well and Hrgovic was cut after a clash of heads, but the Croatian, who won bronze at Rio 2016, landed the cleaner shots throughout the fight. The judges scored it 98-92, 96-95 and 97-93 in favour of Hrgovic, who has now won 18 and lost one of his 19 bouts - that defeat coming last June against Daniel Dubois, who Joyce beat in 2020.Joyce, a silver medallist at the 2016 Rio Olympics, won his first 15 professional fights but was stopped twice by Zhilei Zhang in 2023 before losing to Derek Chisora last July.He was meant to face Dillian Whyte in Manchester before his fellow Briton withdrew because of an injured hand."We'll all have a chat and see where we go from there," added Warren."It was a very close fight. Joe has been a great servant for British boxing and he's never in a boring fight."
Orie wins professional debut
On the undercard, British heavyweight Delicious Orie started his professional career with victory over Milos Veletic.Orie, 27, won 40-36 on points in the four-round bout, showing glimpses of his promise at times but proving unable to land a telling blow on his opponent from Bosnia and Herzegovina to secure a knockout.Orie won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and represented Great Britain in last year's Olympics in Paris.Elsewhere, David Adeleye claimed the British heavyweight title with a controversial stoppage of Jeamie Tshikeva.Adeleye dropped Tshikeva - known as TKV - twice in the sixth round, with the second resulting in referee Ron Kearney calling off the fight. But replays appeared to show Adeleye dropped TKV for the first time moments after Kearney called on the fighters to break after a clinch."The referee said 'break' and he got me," said Tshikeva. "It is what it is. I was boxing well, it was going well."Adeleye pointed out something similar happened to him in a defeat by Fabio Wardley in 2023, adding: "You know what they say, swings and roundabouts."

Kvitova loses on day one of new Queen's Club WTA event
LONDON, June 9 (Reuters) - Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia came from a set down to beat former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and reach the second round of the new WTA 500 event at Queen's Club on Monday. After a 52-year gap since the last top-tier women's event was held at the London grasscourt club, it was fitting that twice Wimbledon winner Kvitova opened proceedings on a court named after former British Wimbledon champion Andy Murray. After an impressive start on the pristine centre court lawn in front of a sizeable crowd, however, the Czech was unable to hold off her younger opponent who prevailed 2-6 6-4 6-4. Kvitova, who won her titles at the All England Club in 2011 and 2014, made her comeback from a 17-month maternity break in February and gained entry to the tournament via a protected ranking. After holding serve in a marathon fifth game, the 35-year-old surged on to win the opening set and looked on course for only her second victory since returning. The rust was apparent though as world number 23 Haddad Maia worked her way back into the match and claimed the win. After levelling the match she got an early break in the deciding set and that proved decisive as she sealed a clash against American third seed Emma Navarro. "For sure (Petra) is won of the best players on this surface and it's a privilege to be here," Haddad Maia said. German qualifier Tatjana Maria also made it through as she beat former U.S. Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez 7-6 6-2.

Gary Neville issues Liverpool transfer verdict including Florian Wirtz surprise
Liverpool have already secured the signings of Jeremie Frimpong and Armin Pecsi this summer, with the duo joining the club's under-21 setup, but are set to add more to their squad Gary Neville has praised Liverpool's recent work in the transfer window, but admitted he's surprised by their persistent pursuit of Florian Wirtz. The Premier League champions have already signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and young goalkeeper Armin Pecsi, who is expected to join the Reds' under-21 squad. Liverpool's summer spree doesn't stop there; they're on the verge of welcoming Wirtz and Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez, with the German attacker poised to set a record as both Liverpool's most expensive ever signing and potentially the priciest player in the history of British football. The Reds have reportedly made an offer totalling £113million for the Leverkusen ace, who, despite his current club's £125m valuation, seems eager to join the Merseyside club. Neville discussed Liverpool's summer signings on the It's Called Soccer podcast, applauding the club for potentially nailing down three significant deals surprisingly early, and he spoke glowingly of the possible acquisition of Wirtz. " Liverpool won the league four or five weeks ago, so they can start having their recruitment meetings very early," said the ex-Manchester United captain. "I know all clubs do but to involve your manager while you're going for a Premier League title is quite tough so once they've won the title they can be so focused. Wirtz would be a sensational signing. I think when you're talking about winning the league what is it that improves you? "The only thing that will improve you when you win the league is signing world-class players or players who have the potential to be world-class, so signing Wirtz is fantastic." He conceded that while he anticipates shrewd dealings from Liverpool in the transfer market, the sum they're willing to spend on Wirtz did catch him off guard. "[Jeremie] Frimpong and there's talks of [Milos] Kerkez, deals with their right and left backs situations so to get those three done if they were to get [them] done quite quickly would be smart business but I wouldn't have expected anything else from Liverpool," he continued. "Maybe slightly surprised they've gone so heavy in on Wirtz in terms of the fee, they don't normally go that big but [Arne] Slot deserves it by the way. "He waited 12 months for a player to sign, [they] signed [Federico] Chiesa for very little money. So I think they have two years of money tanked up and banked up plus they have all the income guaranteed from next season with the Champions League so I think supporting the manager is the right and only thing to do."

Florian Wirtz Liverpool transfer details as fourth bid made and debut given
Florian Wirtz played 'his last match as a Bayer Leverkusen player' on Sunday according to reports in his homeland, and he is soon expected to complete his move to Liverpool Florian Wirtz continues to close in on his record move to Liverpool - but in Germany they are considering the transfer to be as good as done. Wirtz played the full 90 minutes in Stuttgart as Germany lost the UEFA Nations League third-place playoff 2-0 to France on Sunday, with German publication Bild claiming that both the Reds and Bayer Leverkusen 'must have breathed a sigh of relief' that the 22-year-old came through the match unscathed. That is because Leverkusen are now counting on the deal to be done almost as much as Liverpool are, with the Bundesliga club now waiting on the final offer from the Reds following intense but amicable negotiations. Liverpool will offer around £118million for Wirtz, making him the most expensive player ever signed by a British club. The deal will comprise of a fixed fee upfront said to be over £100m, with the rest in a mixture of bonus payments. The offer still falls sort of the £126m that Bayer had been seeking for the outstanding player in the Bundesliga for the last two seasons, but an agreement between the clubs is widely expected to be reached. Bild add that Wirtz will sign a five-year contract at Anfield to tie him to the club until 2030, and following the completion of the formalities of the deal he will then head off on holiday as a Liverpool player. The German publication then go even further and claim that Wirtz will report for pre-season training with Liverpool on July 7, before making his debut for the Reds in the pre-season friendly against Preston North End at Deepdale on July 13. However that isn't set in stone, and it may well be that Reds boss Arne Slot opts to bring his players back for the new season gradually depending on how much international football they have played over the summer. Wirtz played the full 180 minutes of Germany's Nations League matches against Portugal and France, and so he is likely to be slowly introduced to his new club by the Dutchman. After Preston, Liverpool's only other friendly matches currently scheduled are against AC Milan on July 26 and Yokohama F Marinos on July 30, both on the club's pre-season tour of Japan. Wirtz is expected to be on the tour, and Liverpool could end up scheduling a European pre-season training camp before the Japan trip as in previous summers.
