Emma Raducanu says she is 'going through some stuff' just days before Wimbledon
Emma Raducanu admitted she wasn't 100 per cent focused during her brave defeat to Maya Joint at the Eastbourne Open after receiving "some pretty bad news" ahead of Wimbledon
Emma Raducanu admits she needs to "get my head in the game" for Wimbledon after crashing out of the Eastbourne Open. Raducanu almost pulled off an incredible comeback in her second-round match against Maya Joint before losing on a final-set tiebreak.
The 22-year-old revealed on Tuesday, after her opening round win over Ann Li, that she had received 'some pretty bad news'. That appeared to affect her against Joint as she looked subdued on court.
With her home grand slam around the corner, Raducanu says she needs to focus. She told the BBC: 'Unfortunately I couldn't get over the line today but I can get some rest ahead of next week.
'I feel quite tired. Just going through some stuff and I need to do my best to get my head in the game ahead of next week.
'Realistically, the turnaround is pretty soon – it's only four days away really that Wimbledon starts. I think I'm just going to start with [a day off] tomorrow and then hopefully I can get on the court on Friday.'
The British No.1 looked dead and buried against the Australian when trailed 5-2 in the deciding set. But she produced an inspired spell, breaking Joint three times when she was serving for the match to set up a tie-break.
Victory was in sight when she got a mini-break to lead 4-3 but Joint reeled off four successive points to claim a 4-6 6-1 7-6 (4) victory and move into the quarter-finals. Joint said: "Today was really tough, there was a lot of ups and downs, I was happy I was able to tough it out at the end. I am really glad I was able to win this match."
Meanwhile, Jodie Burrage let victory slip away against former Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova. With the deciding set poised at 6-5, Burrage found herself 0-40 up on the Czech player's serve but was unable to clinch the win, ultimately losing the tie-break.
In the men's tournament, Dan Evans maintained his recent resurgence with a remarkable victory over world No.13 Tommy Paul. The 35-year-old is striving to reclaim his position at the top of the sport after a decline in the rankings.
Performances like this will undoubtedly aid his cause. He secured a 6-4 3-6 6-3 win over the second seed, earning a quarter-final match-up against American Jenson Brooksby.
Meanwhile, lucky loser Billy Harris capitalised on his second chance, defeating Mattia Bellucci 6-3 6-4. However, Jacob Fearnley, Britain's second-ranked player, was eliminated after a 6-3 6-1 loss to Marcos Giron.
Eastbourne is the final tournament before Wimbledon, which begins on Monday, June 30.

Brad Pitt fumes as he's embarrassed by radio host Greg James at F1 simulator - after undergoing 'months of training' with professional drivers
Brad Pitt offered up his middle finger for a photo after being embarrassed by the BBC 's Greg James at a Formula 1 simulator in London. The A-lister, 61, was joined in the capital by co-star of his new F1 movie Damson Idris, 33, to take on a series of challenges at F1 Arcade. Harking back to the 2000s with his new buzzcut, Brad looked suave for the outing in a mint-coloured shirt and a pair of grey slacks. But while his style was typically impressive, Pitt's skills as an F1 driver were not so. Despite starring as race car driver Sonny Hayes in his 'epic' new endeavour, the actor came last (575 points) behind Damson Idris (1125) and Greg (1200) as the trio tried their luck behind the wheel. And Brad didn't seem to take the loss too well as he was pictured flipping the bird for a photo at the central London venue. The contest was seemingly played in good spirits though, as Brad was later seen laughing at Radio 1 host Greg before sitting down for an interview. It was previously revealed that for their roles, Brad and Damson had to undergo 'months of training' that also involved learning the art of this particular genre of racing under the tutelage of seven-time world champion Sir Lewis Hamilton. Speaking to Greg, 39, just a day after his highly-anticipated new movie premiered in the UK, Brad recalled the surreal moment he had the chance to get behind the wheel of British F1 driver Lando Neal's actual motor. Greg quipped: 'I heard a rumour that you've driven the McLaren F1 car?' To which the Hollywood star responded: 'Ask me if I hit 200 miles-per-hour?', before jokingly admitting that he didn't. Brad added: 'Three miles-per-hour short. It was Lando's 23 (car). I didn't sleep for 36 hours it was such a high. 'He (Lando) didn't have a lot of faith in me. Which is fair enough, the time I put up wasn't even close to his. 'His advice was just "don't c**k it up", which I think is fair advice.' The contest was seemingly played in good spirits though, as Brad was later seen laughing at radio 1 host Greg James before sitting down for an interview Brad was joined by a host of stars including Tom Cruise, 62, at F1: The Movie's London premiere on Tuesday in Leicester Square. The two movie stars appeared happy to see each other as they greeted with a hug. Brad sported a quirky green suit and a pair of orange-tinged glasses for the occasion, while Tom donned a simple but classy grey suit. Showing off his buzzcut, Brad was also joined by his girlfriend Ines de Ramon as the couple walked the carpet together. The 32-year-old completed her look with a with a sparkling tasseled handbag. F1: The Movie was made in collaboration with Formula One's governing body, the FIA, and one of the producers is Lewis Hamilton. Pitt plays the lead role of as troubled race car driver Sonny Hayes in the new release. His character pitted against rookie and rival Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) as they battle it out at various Grand Prix's around the world. While the reviews for F1: The Movie aren't quite all in yet, social media reactions from several critics began flooding in on X this week. Many praised Brad and Damson's onscreen chemistry, as well the movie's overall look thanks to director Joseph Kosinski, who last worked on Top Gun: Maverick. Some even branding F1 the 'Top Gun for racing fans' - three years after the Tom Cruise aviator movie made an eye-popping $1.496 billion worldwide. Commenting on F1: The Movie, iOne Digital's Bernard Smalls said: 'Buckle up #F1TheMovie is an high octane thrill ride. It's one of those films that you go to the movies for. Brad Pitt and Damson Idris are both dynamic. This is top gun for F1 racing fans. Truly a racing movie for a new generation'. While Rotten Tomatoes' Erik David wrote: 'Joseph Kosinski's #F1TheMovie hits the gas and doesn't stop. The races are epic, the sound design, editing, cinematography, performances and music are all top notch'. The movie, which boasts Tommy Hilfiger as it's lifestyle sponsor and Lewis Hamilton as producer, was filmed at various F1 races around the globe for the past few years. In the trailer Brad's character boasts an attitude and an addiction to gambling with a need for speed on the track. But Javier Bardem wants him to be the best in the world and asks him to team with a young talented driver who lacks experience. There is also romance. Brad is seen passionately kissing his screen mate, 42-year-old Irish actress Kerry Condon.

Eni Aluko returns to ITV for Euro 2025 as reason for Ian Wright absence revealed
Eni Aluko will return to ITV for its coverage of the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 but Ian Wright is not part of the broadcaster's line-up this summer. Aluko accused Wright of 'blocking' opportunities for female broadcasters in an interview with the BBC's Woman's Hour in April, and said that the former Arsenal and England striker is 'dominating' the women's game. 'I've worked with Ian a long time and, you know, I think he's a brilliant broadcaster but I think he's aware of just how much he's doing in the women's game. I think he should be aware of that,' Aluko said. 'The fact of the matter is, as I said, there is a limited amount of spaces available. If we had a situation where there was an equal opportunity in the men's game for broadcasters and coaches that there is in the women's game, it's a free for all. 'But that's not the case. I can't dominate the men's game in the way that, you know, you used Ian as an example, Ian is dominating the women's game.' The 38-year-old subsequently issued an apology for her comments, while it emerged that Wright has been paying £1,700 a month to fund Kayleigh McDonald's rehab from an ACL injury she suffered while playing for Stoke City, while he also made a £15,000 donation towards training courses to help increase the number of female grassroots coaches. Wright refused to accept Aluko's apology and she was not part of ITV's punditry line-up for England's following fixture, a 5-0 win against Portugal at Wembley, in May. But Aluko, who scored 33 goals in 105 appearances for England during her playing career, will be one of the studio pundits for Euro 2025 alongside Karen Carney, Emma Hayes, Vicky Losada, Laura Georges, Jayne Ludlow and Caroline Weir. France vs England (July 5, 8PM) England vs Netherlands (July 9, 5PM) England vs Wales (July 13, 8PM) Wright, meanwhile, was part of ITV's line-up throughout England's qualifying campaign for Euro 2025 and was with the broadcaster for the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia. 'I love football, and the girls are playing,' Wright said on the BBC's The One Show this week. 'I'll tell you what it is, it's Kelly Smith, Kelly Smith's story inspires me, drives me to want to make sure that girls have every opportunity to play that they can. 'She's the one who made me think to myself, 'right, I'm, going to really push this as far as I can', give the girls the opportunity just to play, just because they want to.' Edinburgh Commonwealth swimmer Archie Goodburn opens up on incurable brain tumour
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info An Edinburgh Commonwealth Games swimmer has opened up on a devastating diagnosis in a new BBC interview. Archie Goodburn, won bronze in the men's 50m breaststroke at the 2019 World Junior Swimming Championships and has represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games. In 2022, the then 22-year-old announced the heartbreaking news that he was diagnosed with three brain tumours. The athlete, from Edinburgh, has now shared heart-wrenching details about his journey with the incurable disease in a BBC interview. He said: "I get much strength for my family and my girlfriend, and ultimately, just dreaming of my future. I see the future in different ways on different days. There are days where I wake up from bed feeling positive and knowing that things are coming and hoping that things are going to be out there. "And other days, my eyes open and I realize I have a brain tumor, I have brain cancer, and there is an end point to my life, and it's much, much earlier than it should be." Despite his condition, Archie is still in the pool swimming and otherwise in good health. The now 24-year-old spoke on his goals for the future in light of his diagnosis. He added: "It's day to day. It's putting one foot in front of the other. One of the most important things for me is trying to stay present, trying to wake up in the morning and think about how much my day is going to be affected today. And if I can say the answer to that is not too much, then that's a huge positive for me to take away. I want to keep going for as long as I can. I want to be in Glasgow the next Commonwealth Games." Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community her e and get the latest news sent straight to your messages. Archie is fortunate in that he does not suffer from permanent side effects and his tumour symptoms can be managed with anti-epileptic drugs. The athlete said he can "live a pretty normal life at the moment". He continued: "But that's not to say that that's something that's going to last, and it won't be something that lasts. "I'm fortunately in a position where I haven't been diagnosed with a glioblastoma. I don't have 12 to 16 months, I may have considerably longer than that. "Often people don't get anywhere near as long as I get when they're diagnosed with brain cancer. And they're not really in a position where they're going to want to spend their time raising awareness. They're going to want to spend their time living each day as it comes, making the most of every hour they have. "I realized now that I'm in a position now with my sport with my diagnosis that I have time to raise awareness and shout about this horrible disease that does take so many lives."
