Emma Raducanu admits she needs to "get my head in the game" for Wimbledon after crashing out of the Eastbourne Open. Raducanu almost pulled off an incredible comeback in her second-round match against Maya Joint before losing on a final-set tiebreak.
The 22-year-old revealed on Tuesday, after her opening round win over Ann Li, that she had received 'some pretty bad news'. That appeared to affect her against Joint as she looked subdued on court.
With her home grand slam around the corner, Raducanu says she needs to focus. She told the BBC: 'Unfortunately I couldn't get over the line today but I can get some rest ahead of next week.
'I feel quite tired. Just going through some stuff and I need to do my best to get my head in the game ahead of next week.
'Realistically, the turnaround is pretty soon – it's only four days away really that Wimbledon starts. I think I'm just going to start with [a day off] tomorrow and then hopefully I can get on the court on Friday.'
The British No.1 looked dead and buried against the Australian when trailed 5-2 in the deciding set. But she produced an inspired spell, breaking Joint three times when she was serving for the match to set up a tie-break.
Victory was in sight when she got a mini-break to lead 4-3 but Joint reeled off four successive points to claim a 4-6 6-1 7-6 (4) victory and move into the quarter-finals. Joint said: "Today was really tough, there was a lot of ups and downs, I was happy I was able to tough it out at the end. I am really glad I was able to win this match."
Meanwhile, Jodie Burrage let victory slip away against former Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova. With the deciding set poised at 6-5, Burrage found herself 0-40 up on the Czech player's serve but was unable to clinch the win, ultimately losing the tie-break.
In the men's tournament, Dan Evans maintained his recent resurgence with a remarkable victory over world No.13 Tommy Paul. The 35-year-old is striving to reclaim his position at the top of the sport after a decline in the rankings.
Performances like this will undoubtedly aid his cause. He secured a 6-4 3-6 6-3 win over the second seed, earning a quarter-final match-up against American Jenson Brooksby.
Meanwhile, lucky loser Billy Harris capitalised on his second chance, defeating Mattia Bellucci 6-3 6-4. However, Jacob Fearnley, Britain's second-ranked player, was eliminated after a 6-3 6-1 loss to Marcos Giron.
Eastbourne is the final tournament before Wimbledon, which begins on Monday, June 30.

Eni Aluko returns to ITV for Euro 2025 as reason for Ian Wright absence revealed
Eni Aluko will return to ITV for its coverage of the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 but Ian Wright is not part of the broadcaster's line-up this summer. Aluko accused Wright of 'blocking' opportunities for female broadcasters in an interview with the BBC's Woman's Hour in April, and said that the former Arsenal and England striker is 'dominating' the women's game. 'I've worked with Ian a long time and, you know, I think he's a brilliant broadcaster but I think he's aware of just how much he's doing in the women's game. I think he should be aware of that,' Aluko said. 'The fact of the matter is, as I said, there is a limited amount of spaces available. If we had a situation where there was an equal opportunity in the men's game for broadcasters and coaches that there is in the women's game, it's a free for all. 'But that's not the case. I can't dominate the men's game in the way that, you know, you used Ian as an example, Ian is dominating the women's game.' More info An Edinburgh Commonwealth Games swimmer has opened up on a devastating diagnosis in a new BBC interview. Archie Goodburn, won bronze in the men's 50m breaststroke at the 2019 World Junior Swimming Championships and has represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games. In 2022, the then 22-year-old announced the heartbreaking news that he was diagnosed with three brain tumours. The athlete, from Edinburgh, has now shared heart-wrenching details about his journey with the incurable disease in a BBC interview. He said: "I get much strength for my family and my girlfriend, and ultimately, just dreaming of my future. I see the future in different ways on different days. There are days where I wake up from bed feeling positive and knowing that things are coming and hoping that things are going to be out there. "And other days, my eyes open and I realize I have a brain tumor, I have brain cancer, and there is an end point to my life, and it's much, much earlier than it should be." Despite his condition, Archie is still in the pool swimming and otherwise in good health. The now 24-year-old spoke on his goals for the future in light of his diagnosis. He added: "It's day to day. It's putting one foot in front of the other. One of the most important things for me is trying to stay present, trying to wake up in the morning and think about how much my day is going to be affected today. And if I can say the answer to that is not too much, then that's a huge positive for me to take away. I want to keep going for as long as I can. I want to be in Glasgow the next Commonwealth Games." Archie is fortunate in that he does not suffer from permanent side effects and his tumour symptoms can be managed with anti-epileptic drugs. The athlete said he can "live a pretty normal life at the moment". He continued: "But that's not to say that that's something that's going to last, and it won't be something that lasts. "I'm fortunately in a position where I haven't been diagnosed with a glioblastoma. I don't have 12 to 16 months, I may have considerably longer than that. "Often people don't get anywhere near as long as I get when they're diagnosed with brain cancer. And they're not really in a position where they're going to want to spend their time raising awareness. They're going to want to spend their time living each day as it comes, making the most of every hour they have. "I realized now that I'm in a position now with my sport with my diagnosis that I have time to raise awareness and shout about this horrible disease that does take so many lives."
