Odisha: 15-year-old girl set on fire by three men in Puri district
The girl has suffered 70% to 75% burn injuries and her condition is stable, Executive Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar Dr Ashutosh Biswas told The New Indian Express.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday said that the girl has been airlifted to AIIMS, Delhi for ' the best possible treatment ', adding that the state government would ensure all necessary support to the teenager.
A preliminary investigation found that three persons on a motorcycle allegedly intercepted her at an isolated spot, tied a handkerchief around her face, doused her with a flammable substance and set her on fire before fleeing, The Indian Express quoted the police as saying.
Locals took her to Pipili hospital in Puri, from where she was shifted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.
A special team has been formed to investigate the case, Deputy Inspector General of Police Pinak Mishra told The Indian Express.
'We will record the victim's statement once her condition improves,' the newspaper quoted Mishra as saying. 'The police have been taking information from her friends, relatives and other locals.'
He added that a few persons have been detained for questioning, The Hindu reported.
The incident comes almost a week after an undergraduate student set herself on fire on July 12 after her complaint of sexual harassment by a faculty member in Balasore district allegedly went unaddressed.
She died of her injuries on July 14.
Opposition slams state government
Opposition leaders have condemned the incident, saying that it points to a 'deep systemic failure of governance' in the Bharatiya-Janata Party-ruled state.
Former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said that he was 'deeply anguished' by the attack and claimed that such 'unthinkable' acts against women were now being reported almost daily in Odisha.
Referring also to the recent case in Balasore, where an undergraduate student died after setting herself on fire, the Biju Janata Dal leader said these were not 'stray' incidents.
'These incidents occurring with shocking regularity point to a deep systemic failure of governance,' he said on X. 'It shows that criminals have become emboldened under the present government and are not worried about being punished.'
Patnaik also claimed that Odisha was becoming increasingly unsafe for women.
Congress leader Bhakta Charan Das alleged that the BJP government and the state administration had become ' mere spectators ', while such incidents are occurring repeatedly, The Hindu reported.
'Girl students and women are unsafe in the state,' Das claimed. 'Criminals no longer fear the government, administration and police…Yet, the BJP government, utterly insensitive, continues to beat the drum of good governance.'
His party colleague, KC Venugopal, said that another 'horrific' crime had come to light while Odisha was still reeling under the shock of the Balasore incident.
'How deep must the systemic rot in the police system be for criminals to set a girl on fire in broad daylight with such impunity?' he asked on X. 'With every passing hour, Odisha is becoming an even more unsafe place for women.'

Woman gang-raped in M.P., four held
A 19-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by four men in Madhya Pradesh's Sidhi district, police said on Wednesday (August 6, 2025). Police said the incident took place on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) afternoon when the woman and her friend visited a forested area under Churhat police station limits. The four accused have been arrested. Sidhi Superintendent of Police Ravindra Verma told The Hindu that finding the couple in a secluded area, the accused followed them. Following the incident, State Congress president Jitu Patwari slammed the State's ruling BJP over the incident and said such incidents prove the 'failure of the government'. 'When will the horror of cases of Dalit, tribal, and women's oppression decrease? When will the government ensure their safety? In the past three years, 7,418 cases of rape of Dalit and tribal women, 558 murders, and 338 gang rapes have been recorded in Madhya Pradesh! Man murders friend's estranged wife before killing himself on Bengaluru's outskirts
A man allegedly killed his friend's estranged wife before allegedly dying by suicide at her home on Bengaluru's outskirts on Tuesday evening and their bodies were discovered on Wednesday. The Hebbagodi police in Bengaluru rural district said on Wednesday that the woman, Mandira Mondal, and her estranged husband's friend Suman Mondal, 27, hailed from West Bengal. Suman lived in Tirupalya in the Hebbagodi police limits, while Mandira lived in West Bengaluru before moving to Tirupalya. Police investigations revealed that Suman visited Mandira at her home on Tuesday evening and that a dispute escalated into a violent confrontation, during which Suman allegedly slit Mandira's throat before killing himself. Mandira separated from her husband Bijon Mondal two years ago after eight years of marriage, the police said, adding that the couple's six-year-old son, who used to live with his mother, was at his grandparents' nearby home on Tuesday evening. According to police sources, Suman and Bijon had travelled to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands a year ago seeking daily-wage employment. Suman returned to Bengaluru just 15 days before the incident and reconnected with Mandira, they added. The Hebbagodi police have registered a murder case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and launched an investigation. 'Mandira's parents have filed a complaint and we are investigating. Though it appears that Suman had killed Mandira before dying by suicide, we are also checking if there was any third person involved in the incident. It appears that Mandira and Suman were in a relationship, which her family may not have been aware of,' said a police officer.

Police book five, arrest one in child marriage case in Gurmitkal
The Gurmitkal Police have booked five, including two women, for organising a child marriage recently and arrested the minor girl's husband, who has been made the prime accused in the case. The police action came after a complaint lodged by the officials of the department concerned sought action against those who organised the child marriage in violation of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006. Superintendent of Police Pruthvik Shankar confirmed the arrest of the man for marrying the minor girl. Talking to The Hindu, Mr. Shankar said, 'A case, under Sections 9, 10 and 11 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 was registered against five people, including the minor girl's husband and the two women, and now, the husband has been arrested.' Reacting to the incident, Deputy Commissioner Harshal Bhoyar said that officials of the departments concerned and others, along with police staff, visited the venue where the marriage was said to have been scheduled as per information received at the Child Helpline 1098. Even after waiting for hours, the officers didn't receive any information about the marriage. Except the relatives of the bride and bridegroom, none other from the families were present. Thus, officers returned back, suggesting to the relatives to ask the parents of the bride and bridegroom to appear before the District Child Committee in Yadgir, he said. He added that after a subsequent complaint against the child marriage was received, the officers concerned lodged a complaint, after necessary inquiry, with the police for legal action against those responsible. 'The district administration has a zero tolerance to any offence against children. Stringent legal action will be taken against those responsible accordingly. If any lapses on the part of officers are found in this, action will be taken against them also. We will not spare anyone,' the Deputy Commissioner said. According to member of the Karnataka State Commission for Child Rights Protection Shashidhar Kosambe, the commission has sent a letter to the Deputy Commissioner to take action and submit a report on action taken.
