Alexander Isak training at former club Real Sociedad amid transfer speculation
His former club Sociedad confirmed on Thursday he was 'working with his trainers' at the club's Zubieta facility.
Newcastle have been approached for comment.
The player did not travel with the rest of the Newcastle squad earlier this month for their pre-season tour of Asia amid speculation over his future, with the club saying at the time he was absent due to a minor thigh injury.
The decision to train at his old club rather than his current one will heighten speculation that Isak sees his future away from Newcastle.
No offer has been submitted by Liverpool as yet to Newcastle, who would almost certainly be looking for a British record transfer fee for the player.
Should Newcastle price Isak out of a move or simply refuse to listen to offers, one option Isak and his representatives might consider would be to unilaterally terminate his contract with three years remaining.
A European Court of Justice ruling in favour of former Chelsea midfielder Lassana Diarra last year means players can now terminate their deals 'without unnecessary fears', according to the lawyer who led Diarra's case.
The ruling appears to have given players greater leeway to terminate a contract without just cause.
The court found some of FIFA's transfer rules were contrary to European law because they restricted freedom of movement and were anti-competitive.
Jean-Louis Dupont, who led Diarra's challenge and who was also at the centre of the landmark Bosman case which granted players free agency at the end of their contracts, believes last year's ruling lifts the threat of significant sanctions for players who choose to terminate their deals.
Dupont, speaking in general rather than specifically about Isak's case, told the PA news agency: 'In its Diarra judgement, the court ruled that players have a right to termination without just cause and that it is for the ex-employer to establish the existence and the quantum of damages, knowing that losing the opportunity to transfer the player is NOT a damage.
'According to the court, such termination cannot entail disciplinary sanctions (when effected in between seasons).
'FIFA has, imperfectly, amended its rules to abide by the court ruling. But the bottom line is that players have the right to terminate without unnecessary fears.'
Asked whether he thought players would now be free from the threat of sporting sanctions such as a ban for terminating their deals, Dupont added: 'Yes. If not, the right to terminate, as granted by the court, would just be theoretical. But, apparently, FIFA is still resisting on this point.'
Following the ECJ ruling, FIFA opened a global dialogue on its transfer rules and issued amended, interim rules just before Christmas last year.
The world players' union FIFPRO immediately pushed back on the amendments, saying they did not 'provide legal certainty' to players.
FIFPRO issued guidance to players in May stating that following the ruling, a player's transfer fee or transfer value could no longer be used in the calculation of any compensation due to the club where the player had been contracted, and advised that the compensation paid should be 'limited to the residual value of the contract, with a possible further reduction or increase on the basis of the national law'.
A presumption that a player's new club had induced the termination of contract was removed in the amended rules issued by FIFA last December. Now, a player's old club must prove the new club induced the player to break contract.

Hibs predicted XI for Scottish Premiership kick-off
Pick the same starting XI and hope they get the job done. All being equal, that would seem a pretty simple formula for Hibs at Dens Park today. Yeah, simple ... The issue, of course, is that a lot of the guys who SHOULD be expected to start against Dundee played a lot of minutes in Thursday night's Europa League contest with Midtjylland at Easter Road, which went into extra time before the Danes scored a dramatic late winner. Physically, as well as emotionally, a few of David Gray's go-to performers might not be feeling at their absolute best. Which is never ideal on day one of their domestic season. Hibs also travel to Belgrade on Wednesday to take on Partizan in the Europa Conference League the following night. Does the manager hold anything in reserve for that one? The club have never made it to European group/league phase football, so the prize on offer must be pretty tempting. On a day when Josh Mulligan is making a return to Dens, however, it's not as if Gray has a lot of options. Nicky Cadden played less than half an hour in midweek, stepping down at half-time in extra time with a tight hamstring after coming on as a sub midway through the second half. Hibs are still a midfielder short. The back three are set in stone. And new striker Thibault Klidje is yet to show much, in limited appearances. With all of that in mind, we probably shouldn't expect too many changes. Probably. Anyway, here's how we think the visitors - still without Joe Newell, Rudi Molotnikov and Lewis Miller, for different reasons - might line up: 1 . GK Jordan Smith Absolutely outstanding in the midweek loss to Midtjylland, with the Danes requiring a couple of world-class strikes to beat the 30-year-old Englishman. | SNS Group Photo Sales 2 . RCB Warren O'Hora Irish defender was another who emerged from his Europa League baptism of fire with credit. Back to the bread and butter menu of SPFL action today. | SNS Group Photo Sales 3 . CB Rocky Bushiri A force of nature. Has already started the season as he means to go on. With drama. So much drama. | SNS Group Photo Sales 4 . LCB Jack Iredale Looked absolutely spent - and possibly a little hurt - by the time he was replaced in extra time on Thursday night. Hibs could drop Jordan Obita into the back three, at a pinch. | SNS Group Photo Sales

'I rejected big-money Liverpool transfer - now I could replace Son Heung-min at Tottenham'
With the news that Son Heung-Min is to leave Tottenham Hotspur, Thomas Frank has reportedly identified a player who almost joined Liverpool and Manchester United as the South Korean's replacement Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing up a player who almost moved to Liverpool, as they now look to replace Son Heung-Min. The legendary Spurs forward dropped the bombshell announcement on Saturday that he had made the decision to leave north London. The South Korean forward relayed his intentions on Spurs' pre-season tour of his home country and he will leave a huge hole in Spurs boss Thomas Frank's final third. The Danish boss, while disappointed at the annoucement, will now have to quickly turn his attention to bolstering his frontline, with Paris Saint-Germain's Randal Kolo Muani reportedly at the top of his list. The France international was of interest to Spurs in January, but spent the second half of last season on loan at Juventus, where he scored 10 goals in 22 appearances. He has also courted many suitors in the past, famously Liverpool and Manchester United, while Cheslea have also been linked with the star. Back in January 2023, Sky Germany claimed that Kolo Muani decided against joining Jurgen Klopp at Anfield in what would have been a rumoured £88 million deal. The striker rebuffed the Reds in favour of staying at Eintracht Frankfurt. Kolo Muani claimed he felt at ease at the Bundesliga side. However, after scoring 26 goals in just 50 games for Frankfurt, Muani was snapped up by PSG for £76.2m in September of that year. The 26-year-old could have also made his way to the Premier League via Old Trafford. A report from The Athletic stated that Kolo Muani and Rasmus Hojlund were United's top two forward targets in 2023, but the latter's age, profile and slightly cheaper price gave him the edge. After leaving both Premier League giants red-faced, Kolo Muani had a solid debut season for PSG, starting 40 times and scoring nine goals. Yet he struggled for minutes at PSG last season, scoring twice in 10 Ligue 1 appearances, and so a loan to Juve followed. He flourished in Serie A, scoring eight times in 16 games and registering one assist. His form was so impressive that Juventus are in for him again, but face stiff competition from Spurs. No offers have been lodged yet, but both teams are looking to get a deal over the line. If Spurs are the team to finally bring him to the Premier League, the Frenchman will have big shoes to fill in replacing Son. The iconic South Korean was signed from German side Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and has gone on to score 173 goals in over 450 appearances for Spurs, eventually helping them win the Europa League last season. Speaking of his decision, Son said: "Before we start, I just want to share the information that I have decided to leave this club this summer," Son said. "Respectfully, this club is helping me to make my decision. I just want to share this before we start. "It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. I have spent 10 years at Tottenham. The main reason is I have achieved everything I can at Tottenham. I need a new environment for a fresh challenge. I'm grateful the club have respected my decision and wish Spurs well for the next season." Son refused to comment on his next destination. MLS side LAFC appear to be leading the race for his signature while there is also interest in the player from Saudi Arabia.
