Government of Canada issues statement to mark Italian Heritage Month.
OTTAWA, ON, June 1, 2025 /CNW/ - In June, we celebrate Italian Heritage Month. People of Italian descent have been in Canada since the 1880s and are an integral part of our society, making it more dynamic.
Our country's first Italian community numbered around 2,000 people at the end of the 19th century. In the 2021 census, more than 1.5 million people claimed Italian origins. Home to one of the largest Italian diasporas in the world, Canada is proud of this community's vibrant, shared culture. For generations, people of Italian descent have enriched Canadian society, thanks in part to the Little Italy neighbourhoods in many major Canadian cities that have helped make our country more diverse and more open to the world.
The contributions made by people of Italian descent don't stop at the gates of these neighbourhoods. They have also made notable impacts in finance, politics, cuisine, music, entrepreneurship, education, science and many other fields.
Italian Heritage Month is a time to recognize the rich culture and traditions of Italian Canadians and to celebrate the spirit of community that brings us together. Let's take this opportunity to come together and learn about the heritage of our neighbours of Italian ancestry!

Witkoff urges Hamas to accept ceasefire proposal

Negotiations between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the US, are ongoing despite significant gaps, a source familiar with the matter told The Jerusalem Post. Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, met with senior Hamas officials based in Doha. These officials emphasized that Hamas demands US guarantees that negotiations for a deal, including a ceasefire, will continue after the initial 60-day period, the source told the Post. Efforts are being made to reach new understandings with Hamas before Eid al-Adha, which begins on Friday. In Doha, Bishara Bahbah, an envoy of Steve Witkoff, continued to engage with senior Hamas officials. The mediators, Egypt, Qatar, and the US administration, are working to advance a deal or at least secure agreements between the parties despite the challenges. Canada's Carney and Trump hold secret talks on trade and security, Globe and Mail reports
(Reuters) -Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is secretly holding direct talks with U.S. President Donald Trump to work out a framework for a trade and security agreement, the Globe and Mail reported on Thursday. The talks between the leaders and top cabinet ministers are being held discreetly to ensure a positive outcome, the report said, citing the U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra. The talks include Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the newspaper said, adding that a deal could be reached before September. "The indications that they are talking and in communications regularly is a clear indicator to me that both sides recognize the importance and the urgency of moving this forward," Hoekstra told the Globe and Mail. Carney's office declined to comment and the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

After Trump's Tariffs Crash Exports, Canada Posts a Record Trade Deficit
Driven in part by a steep drop in auto shipments to the United States after President Trump imposed steep tariffs, Canada posted a record trade deficit of 7.1 billion Canadian dollars, about $5.2 billion, in April. Exports to the United States, Canada's largest market, were hard hit after the president began his trade war with Canada, declining by 15.7 percent since March, according to data by Statistics Canada, the national census and economic data agency, released on Thursday. Mr. Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on autos in April and introduced a similar levy on auto parts, although he has since suspended that tariff. This week, Mr. Trump doubled tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada and most of the world to 50 percent from 25 percent. Canada's economy is heavily dependent on trade, and last year about 75 percent of its exports were sent to the United States. Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada has framed the trade war Mr. Trump started as a crisis for Canada and made shifting the country away from its reliance on the United States a cornerstone of his leadership.
