'I'm coming in to compete with Pandur'

BBC News04-07-2025
Goalkeeper Dillon Phillips said he has not just joined Hull City to make up the numbers, he has every intention of vying for the number one spot.Phillips signed for the Tigers in June from Rotherham but he will face tough competition to break into the starting XI after an impressive 2024-25 campaign from Ivor Pandur, who was named the player of the season."If I said to you that I was going to come in and be happy to be a backup to Igor, then that would be doing myself an injustice," Phillips told BBC Radio Humberside."I feel like I can compete at this level and my career has shown that."I'm coming in to compete and coming in to push Ivor as hard as possible, and I already know after a week's training we've got a great dynamic."However, as much as Phillips will want his opportunity to shine, it does not mean he wants to see Pandur falter."It's not a direct competition between me and Ivor," Phillips added."At the end of the day, we are playing for the same football club, so there's not one part of me that wants him to not succeed and I'm sure he would say the same."Listen to the full interview and more on BBC Sounds.

Predictor review: Find out who topped the leaderboard in the season opener and which of our experts have bragging rights

There may be one game left in the Premier League for game week one but Predictor's opener has come to end following Manchester United 's 1-0 defeat by Arsenal. The Red Devils dominated at Old Trafford but Altay Bayindir's error proved costly and Ruben Amorim 's team came away empty handed. Riccardo Calafiori was the beneficiary of the United goalkeeper's mistake and so was Predictor player spevick. A total of 15 players had successfully predicted all seven outcomes of the seven Premier League games this weekend and sat on seven points. But spevick was the only player to choose the 13th minute for the first goal at Old Trafford to put them in a league of their own. In the Daily Mail Sport league it was football expert Nathan Salt who came out on top with five correct predictions and the closest time to Calafiori's 13th-minute goal. Football guru Tom Collomosse put his neck on the line to preview the game on Friday and got four out of seven correct. It was Aston Villa, Brentford and United who let him down from predicting all seven results correctly. Newcastle's 0-0 draw at Villa Park kicked off the Predictor season opener on Saturday lunchtime. Sunderland's 3-0 win over West Ham, Tottenham's 3-0 victory over Burnley and Manchester City's 4-0 thrashing of Wolves completed the first day of action. Nottingham Forest ran out comfortable 3-1 winners over Brentford, while Community Shield winners Crystal Palace held Chelsea to a draw at Stamford Bridge before all eyes turned to Old Trafford. Newcastle to launch improved £35million Yoane Wissa bid – but Brentford will block transfer until they sign replacement

NEWCASTLE are set to launch an improved £35m move for Yoane Wissa and hope to unleash him against Liverpool. Eddie Howe's side kicked off the campaign without a recognised forward available after on-strike Alexander Isak refused to play. 4 4 And the Magpies' need for a new striker was never more evident than after they failed to turn their dominance into three points at Villa Park. Newcastle have missed out on Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko in their so far unsuccessful hunt for a new frontman this summer. They also had a £30m bid rejected by Brentford for DR Congo forward Wissa - but he remains their top target. The 28-year-old has his heart set on joining the Magpies and missed the Bees' 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest yesterday as he tries to secure a move to St. James' Park. And now Newcastle, who forked out £39m to Villa for midfielder Jacob Ramsey on Sunday, are ready to pounce after Brentford completed the club-record £42m signing of Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth. Howe has been happy to wait for Wissa and knows his desire to sign for Toon. Sun Sport understands that the Magpies will re-open negotiations with the Bees by tabling a bid worth £35m in total within the next 24 hours. And confidence is growing within the North East club that they can get the transfer over the line and have the star, who scored 19 Premier League goals last term, in and ready to take on Liverpool next Monday. Brentford boss Keith Andrews claimed there had been no developments regarding Wissa following the loss at Forest but he wants the situation sorted ASAP. He said: "It's a day-by-day one in terms of Wiss. "As far as I know nothing else has happened today, definitely didn't yesterday, so it's as it was really. 'I have no idea what the situation will be, I have been up here since yesterday so we will deal with that during the week. 'Hopefully it can resolve itself sooner rather than later.' Brentford are continuing to hunt for a new centre-forward and SunSport understands they will not sanction a sale of DR Congo star Wissa until they do. And in bad news for the Toon, it is believed the Bees are not close to sourcing a new main man to play up top. They were interested in Arnaud Kalimuendo but the 23-year-old looks set to join Forest instead. Brentford were well beaten in the City Ground as Forest ran into a three-goal lead before half-time Chris Wood netted a brace while new signing Dan Ndoye got off the mark on his debut. The Bees were handed a consolation as Igor Thiago scored his first goal for the club despite signing from Club Brugge for £30m last summer. The Brazilian striker slotted home after Ibrahim Sangare gave away a penalty for a handball. 4

Liverpool target Marc Guehi SNUBS manager Oliver Glasner in awkward post-match moment - sparking Roy Keane rant about 'new garlic bread'

Liverpool target appeared to snub Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner moments after the full-time whistle of his side's goalless draw with Chelsea - fuelling another famous rant by Roy Keane. Sky Sports cameras showed Glasner shouting over to Guehi only for the England centre back to head straight towards the tunnel, leaving Glasner visibly confused. The alleged snub led to Keane hitting out at a new fad in football which sees managers take to the pitch to speak to their players once the referee blows for full-time. Keane believes the conversations should be held in the confines of the dressing room - comparing it to comedian Peter Kay 's infamous 'garlic bread' joke. The Bolton comedian inferred that garlic doesn't belong on the top of bread over 20 years with the catchphrase being heralded as one of the greatest one-liners in British comedy. 'Why has this happened over the last year or two? 'Where managers come on to the pitch and shake hands with everybody and the opposition players. 'A player has just had a tough match, he's physically exhausted, and the manager is just trying to go and have a little chit-chat knowing that there's talk of him leaving. 🗣️ "It's like the new garlic bread" Roy Keane's thoughts on that Oliver Glasner and Marc Guehi interaction at full-time of Chelsea vs Crystal Palace... — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) August 17, 2025 'As a player you don't want to get involved in that as well. 'I've had managers come up after the game and you're going, "what's up with you? Let's get down the tunnel. If you want to have a chat, we will do it inside". 'Managers are always wanting to do something on the pitch. That's all come in the last few years. 'What happened to years ago when the manager would shake the other manager's hand and walk down the tunnel? 'It's the new thing. It's the new garlic bread. Just get down the tunnel, it's just a league match.' Palace striker Jean-Phillipe Mateta also appeared perplexed, and looked to question Glasner about what happened, while turning his head Guehi's way. Keane's fellow Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards added of the frosty interaction: 'Yeah, I don't know if the manager asked him if he's alright. 'Maybe he's got a little knock or something, but it was the reaction after when he went to Mateta, and then Mateta was like, "Is something wrong?" 'Now we don't want to speculate and Marc Guehi is ultra professional.' Daniel Sturridge also weighed in. He said: 'I don't know. I don't know if it's performative. I don't know. Obviously, the cameras are there. 'Is it a: "Oh yeah, I'm going to put my arm around you", and that could have been what it was. 'Guehi, he's made a decision to go down the tunnel. They'll have a chat when he gets to the dressing room. And I'm sure over the course of the next few days, we might find out what exactly happened.' Eberechi Eze also fuelled speculation he could be on the verge of leaving Crystal Palace this summer with Tottenham Hotspur closing in on a move for the attacker. 🗣️ "He looked emotional" 🗣️ "That's part of the food chain I'm afraid" Daniel Sturridge and Roy Keane discuss full-time scenes at Stamford Bridge where Ebere Eze looked like he was saying goodbye to Palace fans — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) August 17, 2025 The England internationals have been pivotal to Palace's success under Oliver Glasner in the past year, with both playing their hand in the club's FA Cup success last season and triumph in the FA Community Shield earlier this month. However, after Palace's stalemate at Stamford Bridge, many have suggested that the pair have made their swansong for the south London club. Eze appeared to shed tears while sitting on the bench after being withdrawn in the 84th minute. After full-time, he looked emotional as he lapped up the support from Palace's away fans. Regarding Eze's emotional scenes, Sturridge said: 'He's on his own thanking them. It looks that way. I think the Palace fans love the player and admire everything he's done for the football club. 'For him, if this is the end, he's been a fantastic servant for the team. I don't know his routine, and that might be his routine that he goes and claps the fans after the game, but he looked emotional. He looked emotional.' Keane, meanwhile, looked onwards and upwards and welcomed the prospect of a big-money move for Eze. The veteran pundit added: 'Palace must realise where they are on the food chain. I think it's a good sign. 'The bigger clubs are coming for your players, and you're getting £50, 60, 70million. That's what's going to happen. That's credit to the players in the club. 'You know the bigger clubs are going to come looking for you. I think it's just part of the food chain, I'm afraid.'
