Air India cancels Zurich-Delhi flight citing technical issue
Agency: PTI Mumbai, Aug 18 (PTI) Air India on Monday said it cancelled its Zurich-Delhi flight of August 17 due to a technical reason, days after the Tata Group-owned airline stated that it had carried out a detailed 'inspection" of its Boeing 787 aircraft fleet and 'no issues" were detected. However, a passenger on board said the flight aborted take-off at the last minute due to an engine issue. In the last two days, Air India has cancelled at least two flights, including one international, at the last moment, citing technical reasons. Air India operates its Boeing 787-8/9 aircraft fleet to cater to the European market. 'Flight AI152 scheduled to operate from Zurich to Delhi on 17 August has been cancelled due to a technical reason, and subsequently due to night curfew in Zurich," Air India said in a statement. The airline said it has arranged alternative flights to the passengers' destination and is providing hotel accommodation, along with full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling options for the passengers. 'Air India flight from Zurich to Delhi is cancelled: aborted moments before take-off, technical issue in engine cited," said the passenger in a post on X. A Delhi-bound Air India plane, carrying Lok Sabha Member and Congress leader Hibi Eden among others, aborted take-off at the Kochi airport on Sunday due to a technical issue, officials said. Earlier, the airline was forced to cancel its Milan-Delhi flight owing to a technical issue which was detected during pushback. The airline, which came under private hands in January 2022, has recently been delaying and cancelling some flights at the last minute due to technical and maintenance issues. This comes despite repeated assurances from Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson that the airline has carried out comprehensive checks on its Boeing 787 aircraft fleet. In a message to the customers recently, while listing out the various steps taken after the fatal crash of an AI-171 flight to London soon after take-off from the Ahmedabad airport, Wilson said detailed inspections of its Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft were done and 'no issues were found during inspection". At 21, Indian-Origin Krishangi Meshram Becomes Youngest Solicitor In UK
Last Updated: Meshram began her legal journey at just 15, enrolling for a law degree with The Open University (OU), UK Krishangi Meshram, a 21-year-old raised in the ISKCON Mayapur community in West Bengal and now based in the UAE, has become one of the youngest solicitors in England and Wales. Meshram began her legal journey at just 15, enrolling for a law degree with The Open University (OU), UK. Three years later, she graduated with a First-Class Honours LLB, the youngest OU student to do so, before completing a Master's degree. She recently cleared the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), officially marking her entry into the legal profession. 'Studying with flexibility not only gave me academic freedom but also taught me discipline, focus, and organisation. These skills helped me secure a role at an international law firm, where I am now gaining practical experience," Meshram was quoted as saying by TOI. She added that distance learning allowed her to balance studies, travel, and family commitments. Her parents, Tapan and Indira Meshram, said they were proud but surprised by her achievement. 'We encouraged her to give it her best shot, but we couldn't have anticipated such a remarkable outcome," they said. Meshram's interest in law began early, after completing a short course at Harvard University. 'It resonated deeply with her core values of justice and fairness," her father recalled. He credited her Mayapur upbringing — 'away from toxic academic competition" — for instilling self-discipline and focus from a young age. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Rupee Rises 20 Paise To 87.39 On Strong Equities, GST Reform Hopes
Last Updated: The rupee rose 20 paise to 87.39 against the US dollar, boosted by strong domestic equities. Sensex surged 1000 points, and Nifty retested 25,000 after PM Modi's GST reform hint. The rupee gained 20 paise to open at 87.39 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday, supported by strong domestic equities. Meanwhile, India's equity indices jumped over 1000 points or 1 per cent in the opening trade, followed by PM Narendra Modi's comment on GST reforms by this Diwali during his 12th consecutive Independence Day speech on August 15. Sensex was trading over 800 points higher at 81,482 at noon, while Nifty gained 300 points to retest 25,000-mark. In a statement issued after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence day address where he announced that GST reforms which will lower tax burden substantially and benefit small industries will be implemented by Diwali, the ministry said that the central government has sent its proposal on GST rate rationalisation and reforms — specifically linked to structural reforms, rate rationalisation, and ease of living — to the Group of Ministers (GoM) constituted by the GST Council to examine this issue. Forex traders said lingering uncertainty over India-US trade tariffs is likely to keep market participants cautious. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 87.46 before strengthening to 87.39, compared with Thursday's close of 87.59. Both forex and equity markets were shut on Friday due to Independence Day. Meanwhile, Brent crude futures slipped 0.06% to USD 65.81 per barrel, with prices easing on reduced concerns over Russian supplies after the US refrained from imposing fresh curbs at its August 15 meeting. Investors will also track US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at Jackson Hole this week for signals on the timing of rate cuts at the September policy meeting, Bhansali noted. The dollar index inched up 0.01% to 97.86. On the domestic market front, the Sensex surged 1,021.93 points to 81,619.59 in early trade, while the Nifty gained 322.2 points to 24,953.50. Foreign Institutional Investors, however, were net sellers on Thursday, offloading equities worth Rs 1,926.76 crore, exchange data showed.
