KUCHING (June 13): Every Sarawakian, regardless of their location, deserves access to high-quality healthcare services, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, Abang Johari reaffirmed the Sarawak government's commitment to building an inclusive and equitable healthcare system, particularly for those in rural and interior regions.
'Our aim is to ensure that all Sarawakians, no matter their geographical location, can access the highest standard of healthcare,' he said during his address at the 51st Annual Scientific Congress of the College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching today.
The Premier highlighted that the state's health transformation agenda is well underway.
This includes expanding access through telemedicine, extending specialist outreach to underserved regions, and strengthening collaboration in medical education and research.
While embracing technology as a driver for healthcare reform, Abang Johari also raised concerns over emerging ethical issues.
'There is a fine line between innovation that uplifts humanity and developments that prioritise profit over people.
'The concern is whether these innovations will be accessible to all, or only to those who can afford them,' he said and called on medical institutions and practitioners to strike a balance to ensure that no one is left behind in the pursuit of progress.
'Innovation must not only be commercially viable but also inclusive, addressing the needs of the wider population – not just the privileged few,' he added.
Abang Johari also urged the medical fraternity to continue advancing science with a people-centred approach, ensuring that new developments enhance the collective well-being of society.

Milestone for Sarawak's livestock sector as 800 live pigs shipped to Selangor

Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom described the occasion as a significant step in the state's journey towards becoming a net food exporter by 2030. 'Today we are witnessing 800 heads of pig all the way to Selangor. This event is indeed very significant. In fact, it is a historic moment that we have to share not only with Sarawakians, but also with Malaysians and the world – that we are now able to export live pigs. 'And in the future, perhaps poultry and more. This has been a dream for us. Becoming a net food exporter by 2030 is a gigantic task, but nonetheless, we are making it happen. 'Once people see that it can be done, they get motivated. And once they believe it's possible, the rest is just history,' he told reporters at the official loading ceremony at Pending Port. The shipment is expected to arrive in Klang within 60 hours or approximately two and a half days. Dr Rundi said this first shipment to Peninsular Malaysia would not be the last. 'In the future, there will be bigger shipments and consignment containers that we send to Selangor. They can have the abattoir in Selangor and the meat can be distributed all throughout West Malaysia. And also the plan is to send directly to Penang and Johor,' he said. The pigs were supplied by Green Breeder Sdn Bhd, a Sarawak-based company led by Dr Ng Siew Thiam and his family, who currently export approximately 2,000 pigs weekly to Singapore. Dr Rundi commended the company's efforts and biosecurity standards, noting their success in maintaining exports even during the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak that impacted many other regions. 'Sarawak has been fortunate to remain an exporter of live pigs to Singapore, and now, other Asean countries may also be looking at us in the same light. 'Sarawak is free from foot and mouth disease (FMD) and that gives us a real advantage and leverage in attracting investors and encouraging more livestock farming activities here in the state,' he explained. Dr Rundi pointed out Sarawak first began exporting live pigs to Singapore in 2017, starting with a farm in Simunjan. He said the initial goal was to involve smallholder farmers, but biosecurity and technological requirements proved challenging. 'Not many could survive under such tight protocols, so we had to move from subsistence farming to high tech. Dr Ng told me they are going all the way with high-tech systems and biosecurity. That's why they can survive,' he said. To support the livestock sector's growth, Dr Rundi said the state will establish a new School of Veterinary Medicine in Semenggok through a collaboration with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Sarawak, formerly known as UPM Bintulu Campus. 'At the moment, we are lacking veterinarians. We need many more to manage and support the livestock industry. 'When we visited Brazil, they had 4,000 vets looking after their cattle. Here, we have only 15 government vets handling everything, while the rest are private. So, it has to be comprehensive – we must plan everything properly so that we can realise the dream we have. 'With this initiative, we can plan more effectively for the future of the livestock and agricultural sectors in Sarawak. I see great potential for Sarawak to become an agricultural hub,' he added. On the issue of pork prices, Dr Rundi said the government is monitoring the situation, but market rates are ultimately driven by supply and demand. 'When you talk about business, it's supply and demand. What we need now is to increase the supply to help reduce the price. 'At the moment, the supply is limited, so prices go up. That's why everyone is craving for it and they have to pay for it. But if we can increase production and volume, we will have better control over supply and pricing,' he said. He explained that the government is taking steps to prevent prices from soaring too high. 'At the moment, the price is around RM32 per kg. In Sabah, it's RM45, and in West Malaysia, even more — over RM40 to RM45 in the Klang Valley. We are the cheapest now. We cannot complain — but still we complain,' he added. Among those present at the event were Deputy Minister for Modernisation of Agriculture and Regional Development Datuk Martin Ben, Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak director Datu Dr Adrian Susil, Kuching Port Authority general manager Robert Lau Hong Thiam, Sarawak Agriculture Department director Dominic Chunggat, and Green Breeder Sdn Bhd director Dr Ng Yong Han. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the centre is set to expand to Miri and Bintulu, extending its HIV support network. 'We take the issue of HIV and AIDS seriously. The increasing number of new cases is a concern we monitor closely. There is no room for complacency,' he said in his speech at the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) Kuching Gala 2025 at a hotel here last night. His speech was delivered by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. The state government also contributed a further RM200,000 during the gala, bringing the total funds raised at the event to RM3.5 million. This amount includes donations from various corporate donors to support the sustainability and expansion of the TKTN safehouse and outreach model. Abang Johari further reaffirmed the state's support for high-impact initiatives, such as the Differentiated HIV Services for Key Populations (DHSKP), a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Health and its partners. 'By reaching out to key populations with tailored care and outreach, the programme reflects the realities of our state — where geography, diversity, and vulnerability require localised and responsive solutions,' he added. He commended MAF Sarawak for its collaborative approach with the government and private sector partners, including Sunway Group and Yayasan Petronas, in expanding DHSKP services. Abang Johari also highlighted youth as a key focus in the state's HIV response, stressing the need to equip them with knowledge, tools, and safe spaces to make informed decisions, particularly in reducing the risk of sexual transmission and safeguarding their wellbeing. He went on to call for greater collective responsibility in addressing the stigma surrounding HIV. 'For many, it is not the virus itself, but the isolation, shame, and discrimination that cause the deepest pain. This is a burden no one should bear — and it is one we all have a duty to lift,' he said. Abang Johari expressed appreciation to MAF Borneo patron Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Puan Sri Jamilah Anu for continuing the legacy of the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem (affectionately known as Tok Nan), who helped to establish the first TKTN facility here nine years ago. Among present were Ministry of Health deputy-director general (Public Health) Dr Ismuni Bohari, MAF trustee Assoc Prof Dr Raja Iskandar Shah Raja Azwa as well as MAF and Malaysian AIDS Council executive director Jasmin Jalil. Mayor Wee urges vigilance as Sarawak logs three more rabies cases

File photo shows a pet owner bringing his dog for vaccination at a Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak's rabies awareness and immunisation programme. KUCHING (July 13): Sarawak recorded three rabies cases from July 7 to 11, two of which involved stray dogs, said Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng. According to him, the two positive cases involving stray dogs occurred in Moyan Square, Batu Kawah, and Bintulu. 'The other case involved a pet dog from Lorong 3, Taman Sri Moyan, Batu Kawah,' he said during his Facebook live 'Shall WEE Talk' yesterday. Wee said all dog owners are required to send their pets for anti-rabies vaccination regularly, as stipulated under Section 40 of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999. Failing this, he said they will face a fine not exceeding RM2,500. He added that dog owners who fail to show proof of vaccination may also face legal action. Pointing out that rabies remains a public health threat to Sarawakians, the Mayor urged everyone to remain vigilant and do what they must to curb its spread. Wee also called upon pet owners to bring their dogs for the jab at a mass anti-rabies vaccination campaign to be held at the MBKS Dewan Masyarakat on Sept 20, in conjunction with the World Rabies Day. He said another similar drive is scheduled to take place at the Sarawak Basketball Association's premises in Taman Seng Goon on Oct 4. 'MBKS has been organising free anti-rabies vaccination programmes, and the last of its kind was held at the Mayor Song Swee Guan Park in Tabuan Jaya.' Wee hoped that dog owners will seize these opportunities to make sure that their pets are vaccinated against rabies. He said this is a move to protect not just their own pets but also their family and the community at large. He also reminded all that rabies is fatal, and that prevention is better than cure. lead new cases rabies vaccination drive wee hong seng
