Kevin Spacey declares it's 'nice to be back' as he accepts lifetime achievement award

Perth Now21-05-2025

Kevin Spacey declared it's "nice to be back" before accepting a lifetime achievement award during a charity gala in France.
The 'House of Cards' star made a return to the spotlight at the Better World Fund Gala in Cannes to accept a prize honouring "excellence in film and television" marking his first major public appearance since he was cleared of sexual assault charges in London in 2023 - and Spacey used his speech to address his legal issues.
According to Deadline.com, Spacey thanked Better World Fund Gala President and Founder Manuel Collas de La Rochefor inviting him to the event, saying: "I'd like to congratulate Manuel for the decision to invite me here tonight to accept this award,.
"Who would have ever thought that honoring someone who has been exonerated in every court room he's ever walked into would be thought of as a brave idea. But here we are."
He went on to talk about screenwriter Dalton Trumbo - who was blacklisted from Hollywood after being accused of having Communist links - and praised the "bravery" of actor Kirk Douglas for standing up for Trumbo and giving him the chance to pen the screenplay for his Oscar-winning movie 'Spartacus'.
Space added: "Kirk Douglas took the risk, and would later say ... 'It's easier for us actors to play the heroes on screen. We get to fight the bad guys and stand up for justice. But in real life, the choices are not always so clear. There are times when one has to stand up for principal'.
"I've learned a lot from history - it often repeats itself. The Blacklist was a terrible time in our history [we must remember] so that it never happens again."
He went on to praise his manager Evan Lowenstein for helping him through the tough times.
Spacey said: "Through Evan, I have learned to seek understanding instead of judgement and with this guidance, I've been able to come out these last few challenging years, not angry, not bitter, not resentful, but more present, more loving, more understanding and more forgiving in my life."
Spacey's speech came after he walked the red carpet at the event and told reporters: "I feel surrounded by so much affection and love.
"I've heard from so many of my friends, and colleagues and co-stars in the last week since this award was announced. I feel surrounded by support and it's very nice to be back."
When asked if he is planning a career comeback, Spacey replied: "Well, I'm glad to be working - I'll tell you that!"
Spacey denied all allegations of misconduct against him and he was acquitted of nine sexual assault charges he faced in the UK in 2023. He was also found not liable in a sexual assault lawsuit filed in New York which was dismissed in 2022.

Nick Jonas 'to play KISS frontman Paul Stanley in biopic'

Nick Jonas has reportedly been lined up to play KISS frontman Paul Stanley in a new biopic. The pop star/actor is believed to have been tapped to portray the band's frontman in 'Shout It Out Loud', which will be directed by McG and will chart the rock band's rise to fame. The Hollywood Reporter reports Jonas is in "final talks" to take on the role of Stanley, while movie bosses are still looking for an actor to play the singer's bassist bandmate Gene Simmons. The group is helping to develop the project while Stanley and Simmons are among the producers along with McG. reports Jonas plans to take on singing duties in the film and needs time to train his voice to be able to emulate Stanley's signature vocals. Longtime KISS manager Doc McGhee previously revealed the movie would focus on the band's first four years together after forming in the 1970s. Speaking to Talking Metal in 2021, he explained: "[The script is] completely done … And the script is about the first four years of KISS. Basically, it's before they were famous - it was up to Cadillac High [KISS' famous gig in a high school gym in Cadillac, Michigan in 1975] , that kind of thing ... "And I think it's a very interesting look at the formation of KISS, the mindset of how that came about, the social pressure that everybody was in in the '60s and '70s that brought something like KISS to the forefront, that it could actually happen. So it's a very interesting, and I think it's a well-written movie." Stanley has also previously spoken about the movie, telling broadcaster Kylie Olsson in 2021: "[The movie is] definitely happening. And that's gonna be really interesting. The script was really good. And we really waited until we felt comfortable." He added of actors who could play him in the film: "I will tell you this: for casting to be accurate in terms of age, we are looking at actors in their early 20s. "Honestly, I don't know a whole lot of actors in their early 20s. When people get asked these kinds of questions, they'll say, 'Oh, Brad Pitt,' or this one or that one. "Well, those guys are in their 50s or 60s, so you're talking about another generation of actors. And I'm the first to say I'm not up on a lot of them. "But as the casting process goes on, I'll certainly be there and watching. It'll be interesting to see how someone else- be it the casting people or the director - how they view who I am and who they see doing that. I think I'll learn a lot about their perception of me by who they cast."

Hollywood icons become owners of Aussie sports team

Australia's ocean dominance has got a Hollywood upgrade as Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds became co-owners of the country's three-times champion SailGP team, now rebranded as the BONDS Flying Roos. The investment adds star power to the Australian outfit who have dominated the global sailing championship, winning a trio of titles in four seasons of the high-speed racing series. 'We're incredibly excited to set sail together in this new adventure,' Jackman and Reynolds said in a statement. 'Hugh brings a deep love for and pride in his home country as well as being an avid fan of sailing.' The move comes just days after Oscar winner Anne Hathaway sailed into sports ownership, joining a female-led consortium who acquired the Red Bull Italy SailGP Team in what circuit CEO Russell Coutts called 'another significant milestone in SailGP's growth as a league'. SailGP director Andy Thompson added: 'Today marks a landmark moment not just for the Australia team, but for the trajectory of SailGP globally,' highlighting the 'extraordinary combination of global reach, vision, commercial nous' the Hollywood duo bring. Miley Cyrus takes stab at Aussie ex-husband Liam Hemsworth at album signing, fan shares images

Miley Cyrus has thrown some very obvious shade at ex-husband Liam Hemsworth using just three words at a meet and greet with fans. During the event, the 32-year-old Hannah Montana star met a fan who shared the same first name as her former spouse. As she signed a copy of her new album, Something Beautiful, Miley wrote a playful message: 'The Best Liam.' The fan, delighted by the moment, posted a photo with Cyrus and captioned it: 'me when I'm 'The Best Liam.'' The autograph quickly caught attention online. Cyrus and Hemsworth's relationship began on the set of the 2010 film The Last Song and spanned a decade, including a secret wedding in December 2018. Their marriage ended less than a year later, with Hemsworth filing for divorce, citing 'irreconcilable differences.' Their split was finalised in January 2020. Since then, Miley has been in a relationship with drummer Maxx Morando, while Hemsworth has dated model Gabriella Brooks since late 2019. Since their breakup, Liam has kept a relatively low profile and rarely comments on Miley or their past. Despite Miley's public remarks, Liam has never publicly retaliated or spoken negatively about her. The pointed autograph is just the latest in a series of public moments where Miley has seemingly taken aim at Liam. Her Grammy-winning hit 'Flowers' sparked massive controversy when it was released on Liam's birthday on January 13, 2023, with fans dissecting the lyrics for references to their breakup and even rumours of infidelity. The lyrics appear to reference their shared Malibu home that burned down in the 2018 wildfires, as well as themes of independence and moving on after their breakup. In a recent interview on The Zane Lowe Show, Miley opened up about a health scare, sharing, 'I had a medical emergency – I had an ovarian cyst rupture – we didn't know exactly what was going on so we did it.' She added, 'It was pretty traumatic because it was extremely excruciating and I did the show anyway.' Cyrus also discussed her decade-long sobriety, saying, 'I need it. I live for it. It's changed my entire life. I've learned this about myself over the years: sobriety is, like, that's like my God.' Miley is currently promoting her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, which dropped on May 30. The album release is accompanied by a musical movie of the same name, set to hit theaters on June 6.
