Hajj pilgrims advised to limit exposure to midday sun

MAKKAH: The Ministry of Health has advised pilgrims to avoid direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. — when temperatures at the holy sites are at their highest — to help avoid heat exhaustion and sunstroke. The importance of following preventive measures such as using umbrellas, drinking plenty of water and complying with instructions from the authorities has also been emphasized. The guidelines have been issued to protect pilgrims and ensure their safety during Hajj, the Saudi Press Agency reported. So far, the ministry has reported a 90 percent reduction in the number of cases of heat exhaustion from last season. The improvement aligns with the goals of the Health Sector Transformation Program and the Pilgrim Experience Program, both part of Vision 2030, which aim to ensure a safer Hajj experience. The Ministry of Health said the decrease was a result of stronger preventive measures, expanded awareness campaigns and effective coordination across relevant agencies. These actions have included the launch of an awareness kit in eight languages to help prevent heat-related illnesses during Hajj. The kit includes guidelines, videos, social media posts and printable materials advising pilgrims to stay hydrated and use umbrellas to avoid direct sun exposure.

How Ihram clothing is tailored and designed for Hajj

RIYADH: During Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Makkah, Muslim men wear Ihram — simple attire representing purity and equality. Ihram is made of two white unstitched pieces of fabric. One, the Izar, is wrapped around the waist while the other, the Rida', covers the shoulders. 'Ihram is worn by men during Hajj and Umrah, and it is always unstitched and white,' Abdullah Al-Ahmad, who owns a menswear store in Riyadh, said. '(It) usually consists of two pieces, a lower piece and an upper piece, and the most popular types of Ihram in the market are those made of elastic, and those tied around the belt. People usually prefer cotton, especially Egyptian cotton, for its high quality; also because cotton is softer on the skin and does not absorb heat.' Hamad Al-Yami, a Saudi inventor in nanotechnology and member of the International Federation of Inventors' Associations, talked to Arab News about his nano-silver technology Ihram. 'The idea originated while I was working at the Saudi Ministry of Health, where I noticed the need for antibacterial medical clothing,' he explained. 'The concept later evolved to include Ihram clothing after studying the challenges pilgrims face, such as the spread of infection in crowded conditions, wearing Ihram for a long period of time, sometimes for days at a time, and the limited effectiveness of traditional fabrics.' He added he was inspired by the historical use of silver for sterilization and developed a technique using silver nanoparticles, each about one-millionth of a millimeter, to sterilize cotton fabric. The primary purpose of his invention was to reduce infection, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Along with his antibacterial clothing, he has future plans to work on recycled Ihrams and turn them into eco-friendly products like bags or pillows that could be used in mosques. While men wear Ihram, women have more flexibility when it comes to clothing choices during Hajj, although modesty is still a requirement when choosing fabric and colors. Due to the hot weather in the Makkah region, most women prefer lightweight, breathable materials such as cotton and linen. 'There are no specific clothes for women. Any texture, any color, as long as it is not decorated and is socially appropriate for Hajj. It should be modest and mostly white or beige,' said pilgrim Afnan Al-Harbi. 'I used to wear white because it was hot and sunny in Makkah and the color is cooler a little bit. We also don't wear perfumes, we don't cover our faces, and we don't wear gloves. Still, a lot of pilgrims at the time were wearing black abayas.' Wearing the Ihram is not a fashion choice. It indicates a state of spiritual readiness to submit to God and clear the mind and body of all negativity, so that Hajj can be begun with a positive mindset.

Interior Ministry: Hajj success a shared responsibility as pilgrims arrive in Mina

Saudi Gazette report MINA — Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior emphasized on Wednesday that the success of the Hajj season is a shared responsibility, calling on all parties to adhere strictly to official regulations. Security and organizational preparations are in full effect to ensure smooth pilgrim movement between the holy sites. In a press briefing, Ministry of Interior security spokesperson Col. Talal Al-Shalhoub confirmed that pilgrims had been safely transported to Mina to observe the Day of Tarwiyah, in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). 'We are utilizing advanced technologies across all sectors to ensure the safety and service of pilgrims. There are no challenges we cannot overcome,' Al-Shalhoub said. 'Our efforts stem from the deep-rooted values of Saudi society—our security personnel serve without seeking reward except from God.' He underscored that the success of the Hajj pilgrimage is a collective responsibility, urging everyone to comply with safety instructions, adhere to scheduled group movement times, and respect approved transportation plans. He also warned of legal consequences for unauthorized transport of pilgrims. Al-Shalhoub revealed that authorities have issued 357 administrative decisions against 397 individuals involved in violating Hajj transport regulations. He added that anyone issuing visitor visas to those attempting to perform Hajj without permits would also be held accountable. Dr. Ghassan Al-Nouaimi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, reiterated Saudi Arabia's welcome to the pilgrims, noting the arrival of over 1.5 million pilgrims from abroad. He said more than 94,000 employees and 3,000 volunteers are serving the pilgrims this year. Al-Nouaimi projected that over one million pilgrims would arrive in Mina by the end of Wednesday, the 8th of Dhul Hijjah. He emphasized the importance of complying with the official pilgrim movement schedules and avoiding walking between the holy sites outside approved plans. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has also launched an updated version of the 'Nusuk' card with enhanced security features, linked to the Nusuk and Tawakkalna apps. Carrying the card is mandatory for all pilgrims during their movements in the holy sites and the Grand Mosque. He also highlighted that 97% of service providers were found compliant following more than 62,000 inspection tours of pilgrim accommodations. In addition, the operational capacity of the Mataf (circumambulation area) has been raised to accommodate 107,000 pilgrims per hour.
