Amid Deepika Padukone's 8-Hour Work Demand, Banita Sandhu Says, "I Have Always Believed In 12-Hour Turnovers"

New Delhi:
Deepika Padukone and director Sandeep Reddy Vanga have been at odds over an 8-hour work demand. The disagreement led to the actress exiting Vanga's upcoming film Spirit, sparking a wave of speculation about clashing work ethics. Now, actress Banita Sandhu has shared her opinion on the same.
The October actress, in an interview with SCREEN, recalled facing a similar issue. On the contrary, Hollywood, she revealed, has many unions to support the stars and the crew.
Banita Sandhu said, "It is so important. One thing that we have in the West is really strong unions. They protect actors and crew. I have always been a firm believer in 12-hour turnovers for everybody on sets. We are not at war, we are making movies."
She added, "I do not think anyone's mental health should be sacrificed for that. At the end of the day, it is a job, and everyone deserves an adequate amount of rest and sleep. It is a basic human right."
Speaking about Hindi cinema, Banita Sandhu shared that work-life balance is slowly "getting better now." The 27-year-old, however, disclosed that things were not that great during the initial years of her career.
"With Hindi cinema, it is getting better now. But early in my career, when I really did not understand how industries work, I just assumed this was the way to work. I did 16-18 hours a day shifts, where producers aligned my schedule, I would shoot the whole day and then fly at night," Banita Sandhu told the outlet.
Without mentioning Bollywood, Banita Sandhu added that voicing her concerns led to her being "blacklisted" from the industry.
She said, "I did not sleep for 24 hours straight. I stood up for myself and the crew. I told the producers that this is not okay. Maybe, I am blacklisted from that industry now, but I don't care. I just believe in standing up for what's right."
On the work front, Banita Sandhu will next be seen in Detective Sherdil. The murder mystery, directed by Ravi Chhabriya, also features Diljit Dosanjh, Boman Irani, Diana Penty, and Sumeet Vyas in key roles. Detective Sherdil will premiere on Zee5 on June 20, 2025.

Shah Rukh Khan embraces the cast and poses for pictures at Sitaare Zameen Par screening. Watch video

Just a day prior to the release of Sitaare Zameen Par, actor Aamir Khan hosted a special screening of his latest film for family and friends from the industry. Besides stars like Rekha, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Vicky Kaushal and Jeetendra, Shah Rukh Khan also attended the event. Shah Rukh, who had previously met the cast of the film, walked the red carpet and greeted actors Vedant Sharma, Naman Misra, Aayush Bhansali and Aroush Datta, among others. SRK was spotted in a casual look, wearing track pants, jacket and a beanie. Aamir smiled in the background as the cast of the film hugged and posed with Shah Rukh. Watch | Aamir Khan and Gauri Spratt arrive hand in hand at Sitaare Zameen Par screening A post shared by SCREEN (@ieentertainment) Aamir Khan is making an attempt to bring back the traditional theatre viewing experience with Sitaare Zameen Par. He announced during the press run for the film that he doesn't want to release the film on OTT, and he wants people to come to the theatre with their friends and family to enjoy the movie. Staying true to his word, Aamir also rejected a Rs 120 crore OTT deal from Amazon Prime Video. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the advance bookings for the film have reached Rs 2.32 crore without accounting for block seats. The total number with the block seats is Rs 5.76 crore. He said, 'The box office run (of Aamir Khan) currently depends on word-of-mouth. Since the promotion for the film is very light, now the film's success depends only on Aamir Khan's face-value. For the opening weekend, it could be around Rs 30 crore.' Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par features Aamir Khan, Genelia Deshmukh, Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishnan Varma, Vedant Sharmaa, Naman Misra, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain and Ashish Pendse, among others. The story has been penned by Divy Sidhi Sharma, and the film has been jointly produced by Aamir and Aparna Purohit. Music for the film has been composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, and the lyrics have been written by Amitabh Bhattacharya.

Sitaare Zameen Par box office prediction: Early estimates not in sync with Aamir Khan's stardom, says expert

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan returns to the big screen after a gap of three years. His long absence could lead to one of two outcomes – either a massive turnout at the box office from eager fans, or the risk that audiences may have forgotten the unique magic only Aamir brings to the screen. Ahead of its Friday release, Livemint reached out to industry analyst Taran Adarsh for his early box office predictions. It seems Aamir Khan's spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par might see an opening business of a single digit. According to the industry tracker Sacnilk, as of 9 pm Thursday, Sitaare Zameen Par collected ₹ 2.21 crore from the advance booking. Considering blocked seats, the film's revenue now stands at ₹ 5.59 crore after selling over 79,000 tickets so far. Taran Adarsh weighed in, 'The advance booking is not in sync with the star status of Aamir Khan. Yes, the advances should have been better because Aamir Khan returns to the big screen after a big gap with his own production, starring in it. It should have been better.' 'I genuinely believe Sitaare Zameen Par is a word-of-mouth film. It should grow with word of mouth,' he added. Sitaare Zameen Par will be screened in 8,747 shows across India. The film will be released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Releasing on 20 June, the film sees no major clash at the ticket window. Adarsh points out, 'The film enjoys the advantage of a solo release. There's Housefull 5, which will be entering the 3rd week tomorrow, so I guess there's not much of an opposition for this film. It's an open run as of now.' Sitaare Zameen Par will mark its debut exclusively in cinema halls, going against the current trend of OTT releases. Unlike the usual 4 to 8-week window between theatrical and digital premieres, the film will not be released on any streaming platform at all, as confirmed by Aamir Khan. Adarsh opined about the new strategies adopted by Aamir and his team. "There was always an 8-week gap between theatrical and OTT release. This time, Aamir has decided to only release it in cinemas. It all depends on how the audience takes to this film, how the word of mouth is, and then I guess we will be able to know if this idea of having a straight theatrical release without any OTT release works or not. Right now, it's a wait and watch." "Not just Aamir, but the entire industry is looking at it because this is something that has not happened in the past. People sign lucrative contracts with digital players, and depending on how the film fares, after 10–12 weeks or maybe later, they premiere it on a digital platform. We will be looking at it closely. Theatrical business is very important. I stand with Aamir on that front." However, it is certain that the film might not register a double-digit figure on Friday. The business is likely to grow over the weekend. 'The opening numbers, to me, are looking to be in single digits unless a miraculous turnaround happens on Friday and the film gathers momentum, picks up post-noon shows, and registers double digits. As of now, Thursday, it is looking at a single-digit opening,' the industry insider concluded. Sitaare Zameen Par is directed by RS Prasanna. It is produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. It also stars Genelia in the lead, alongside 10 special actors in the cast.
