Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is one of the most iconic movies in Hindi cinema, continuing to entertain audiences even decades after its release. The 1995 film starred Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol as the main leads.
The shooting for the musical romantic film wasn't easy for the makers in the 90s. Unlike today, there were no vanity vans for the actors. In fact, Kajol once changed saree behind a tree on the DDLJ sets.
Karan Johar recalls Kajol changing saree behind a tree during DDLJ shoot
In a recent podcast with Jay Shetty, Karan Johar shared his experience of working on the sets of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. KJo, who assisted director Aditya Chopra, spoke about the time they were shooting in Switzerland.
The filmmaker recalled that they were a team of 21 people travelling in a bus where the DDLJ director would make impromptu stops to shoot at picturesque locations.
Talking about Kajol, Karan remembered how the actress would change her outfits during the Switzerland shoot. 'We used to take Kajol behind a tree and make her wear a saree,' he said.
The Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani director added that Shah Rukh Khan would change anywhere for his shoot. He recalled that they didn't have enough money back then.

In the same podcast, Karan Johar also shared that the DDLJ team, including Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, would walk with equipment in hand during the filming of the 1995 classic. This is because there was no additional support back then.
Karan Johar called the experience 'best learning' of his life
Karan Johar, who worked on the sets of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge for a year, described his experience as the 'best learning' of his life. KJo also revealed that he was responsible for maintaining continuity, handling the crowd, arranging costumes for female actors, and purchasing their accessories at a lower cost from a railway station.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge marked Aditya Chopra's directorial debut in Hindi cinema. It also featured actors such as the late Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Anupam Kher, Mandira Bedi, Satish Shah, and others. Karan Johar played a brief role as SRK's on-screen friend in the 1995 film.

Kerala unveils draft film policy; focus on financial framework, gender equality, global presence

Thiruvananthapuram, The Kerala government on Saturday unveiled a draft film policy at the two-day Malayalam film conclave here, with a focus on establishing a transparent financial framework for the industry and promoting gender equality. Kerala unveils draft film policy; focus on financial framework, gender equality, global presence According to the draft, film production and exhibition will be designated as an industry, enabling access to various incentives and easing financing processes. "The recognition of film production as an industry will bring multiple advantages, enhancing transparency and promoting social responsibility within the sector," the policy stated. The government aims to ensure opportunities for all sections of society to contribute to Malayalam cinema's growth, positioning it as a key global stakeholder and preserving its cultural heritage for future generations. The vision statement outlines the goal of building a strong visual communication ecosystem, ensuring equality across related sectors, and transforming Kerala into a regional production hub by adopting advanced technology and increasing the industry's contribution to the state's GDP. The draft notes that India is the world's largest film producer, with over 2,000 releases annually. Hindi cinema leads with about 400 films a year, followed closely by Malayalam with approximately 300. In 2015, India was the fourth-largest film market globally, with theatrical revenue of USD 2.1 billion. Between 2016 and 2021, the Indian film industry grew at an annual rate of 7.7 per cent. The film industry is optimistic about cinema exhibition prospects this year, with experts estimating theatrical revenue for 2023 in India at around ₹12,000 crore. Kerala alone recorded box office collections exceeding ₹2,000 crore in 2023, the draft said. The policy affirms the government's commitment to continued dialogue with various film industry associations, supporting demands for better wages, job security, medical benefits, and insurance. A general financing incentive scheme for Malayalam cinema will be introduced, with specific provisions for women and marginalised communities. The draft also encourages the production of other Indian languages and foreign films in Kerala. A dedicated film development fund will support promotional and humanitarian initiatives outlined in the policy. A venture capital fund for film production, with private participation and crowdfunding options for socially relevant films, will be created and managed by the Kerala State Film Development Corporation . To promote an equitable work environment, the state will issue detailed guidelines and best practices for the film industry. A single-window film facilitation centre will be established to streamline all shooting-related permits in the state. A Film Development Council, chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and co-chaired by Culture Minister Saji Cherian, with an industry representative as vice-chairman, will be established as the apex body to oversee the development of the film industry. The council will monitor industry activities and recommend policy interventions to the state cabinet as required. The draft policy was distributed among delegates and will be discussed in detail during the two-day conclave, which concludes on Sunday, official sources said. Is Priyanka Chopra Making Her Bollywood Comeback With Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love And War?

Priyanka Chopra's recent throwback post about Ram Chahe Leela has sparked major speculation about her return to Bollywood. It's been a while since Priyanka Chopra graced the Hindi film screen — six years, to be precise. Ever since the global icon shifted base to the US in 2015, she's made only two Bollywood appearances, the most recent being The Sky Is Pink in 2019. But if recent speculation is to be believed, the desi girl might just be on the cusp of a long-awaited homecoming. On Friday, Chopra set the internet abuzz with a rare throwback post on Instagram — a tribute to her fiery dance number Ram Chahe Leela from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013). What stood out wasn't just the choice of memory but the unusually long, heartfelt caption that accompanied it — a rarity for the actor when it comes to revisiting past work. Sharing an insight into how the iconic number came to be, Priyanka wrote, 'When Sanjay Sir came to me with this song, it was a complicated decision, but he, as a filmmaker, has always inspired me. His creative mind, his nostalgic stories usually over incredible food, the conversations of art and music to dance… the beauty of the yesteryears but also what the future holds. And then he played the song… and I knew I was her." She went on to recall working with choreographer Vishnu Deva and cinematographer Ravi Varman, adding, 'Under Sanjay sir's guidance, Ravi Varman's cinematography shone, and Vishnu Deva's choreography was magic. Him and I would rehearse during lunch breaks every day to perfect the dance sequences. This brings back such great memories." While the post read like a sentimental throwback, it also sparked intense speculation online. Industry insiders began to wonder: Was this more than just nostalgia? Now, a source has confirmed to Hindustan Times that the post may, in fact, be a subtle nod to something on the horizon — a possible special appearance in Bhansali's next directorial, Love & War. According to the source, Priyanka may feature in a high-octane special number in the period war drama, which stars Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal. While nothing has been officially signed yet, discussions are reportedly underway. If the collaboration materialises, it would mark Chopra's grand return to Hindi cinema — and that too with the very filmmaker who gave her one of her most celebrated dance numbers. Love & War, currently under production, is slated for release on March 20, 2026, and is being mounted on an epic scale. Reports suggest Bhansali is planning a face-off sequence between Ranbir and Vicky that could rival some of the most iconic scenes in Indian cinema history. Meanwhile, Priyanka is also committed to a major Indian production — SSMB29, her upcoming pan-India film with SS Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu. The ambitious venture also features Prithviraj Sukumaran, though the release date remains under wraps. The film is being pegged as one of the most anticipated cinematic events of the decade. Vaibhavi Merchant wins National Award, says Dhindora Baje Re was always special

Choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant was on her way to work in London when a journalist informed her about her winning the National Award. Her song 'Dhindora Baje Re' from 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' won the Best Choreography award at the 71st National Awards an exclusive conversation with India Today, she said, "It all feels so surreal right now. Because I am not in the country, I didn't know it was happening today. It's an emotional moment, but it has yet to sink in. I am soon going to be 50, and I think it's come as a wonderful birthday surprise."advertisementThis is her second honour after 'Dholi Taro' from 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', but the excitement remains the same. Merchant shared what the award means to her. She said, "It's infused a lot of life back into my work. I'll be honest, as an artist, I still look at every new project as my first one. I still get those goosebumps and the nervous energy. I still choreograph all my pieces with butterflies in my stomach."She added, "For me, entering that rehearsal hall is sacrosanct; it's my temple, the world I was born into. It's also the world that brought me up. Dance is something I have known ever since I was a child. Also, because I've been trained in Bharatnatyam, any piece that celebrates semi-classical or Indian forms, and is encouraged in the Hindi film industry, becomes special for me." The choreographer added that people are often surprised by how she can pull off a classical and a contemporary song like 'Besharam Rang' in the same year. She shared that she "now feels there's an instinctive switch in her brain, which helps her take on different genres at the same time."Merchant discussed in detail the song that brought this honour. She mentioned that 'Dhindora Baje Re' was an extremely important part in the narrative, and kind of lifts the film."It almost felt like a pre-climactic scene, a sequence. For me, it was very clear that I wanted this to become the biggest number in the film. It comes at a very crucial point. Tota Roy Choudhury and Ranveer Singh also have a dance sequence from 'Dola Re Dola' just before that. I remember it was another high to get them to do Kathak, and because I am a huge Saroj Khan ji fan, it was rather very fulfilling," she 49-year-old also spoke about her experience of working with Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh. She said, "I also got to work with both my proteges, since I worked with Alia Bhatt and Ranveer in their first films. So for me to get both these artists to come and do the song was truly remarkable and special. It was my gift, my love for Karan. It's so much fun shooting with him, I would leave everything to be on Karan Johar's set any day."The choreographer added that every member of the film was a delight to work with. And while people keep talking about how the song was 'iconic', broke 'gender roles', Merchant shared that she doesn't work with such preconceived this happens later. It reaches legacy status much later when another generation that's waiting recognises it. Like I would watch a Saroj Khan or people prior to that generation and learn from them. So hopefully, we will also see those days someday," she added with a with the Best Choreography award, 'Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani' also bagged the award for Best Popular film for wholesome entertainment.- Ends
