Beloved family-run record store in Brooklyn to close its doors amid financial challenges
BENSONHURST, Brooklyn (PIX11) — A beloved Brooklyn record shop that's been part of the Bensonhurst community for nearly 60 years is preparing to close its doors. Silvana Conte's parents opened SAS Italian Records in 1967, driven by a dream to bring Italian-Americans a taste of home. More Local News 'I grew up here and I raised my son in here on top of everything else,' said Conte. 'We would do homework in the back together while we took care of the customers. This was the place for everybody to come to, to buy things that were Italian.' What started as a record store selling cassettes and CDs has evolved over the years, offering everything from beauty products and household items to Italian novelties — bringing a touch of Italy to Brooklyn. The shop has become a neighborhood staple, but following the recent passing of Conte's mother, it will soon close its doors for good. Conte says she kept the store open to preserve her mother's legacy, but with mounting financial challenges, the family has made the painful decision to let it go. 'She used to come down here and say, 'This is my goal store. This is what I created.' And I said, 'Don't worry, it's going to be here.' And now she's not here and I can't — I did what I could,' she said, holding back tears. News of the closure has hit longtime customers hard. Paul Ingrisano stopped by for one of his last visits, hoping to hold on to a few memories. 'Always playing Italian music in the summertime and in the streets walking by it just reminds me of my childhood and growing up in the area,' said Ingrisano. He added, 'I came to support, buy a coffee maker and a keychain. Buy something before it closes.' Salvatore Fuda has been coming to the shop for years and said its closing brings a wave of nostalgia. 'I feel bad 'cause it's good memories that's all. Memories old fashioned, old times. Good memories,' said Fuda. Conte doesn't have an exact closing date yet, but she's hoping the store's legacy will live on in the hearts of everyone it touched. 'I want people to remember the good things, you know. All the beautiful memories that we've had here and how we all supported each other,' she said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Confused by latest order? How to calculate if your Jackson County assessment is within limits
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jackson County assessments are showing up in homeowner's mailboxes. Some people may be surprised at the increase after a May order from the State Tax Commission. Some taxpayers may receive tax refunds in June: When payments could arrive That order capped increases in each assessment period at 15% and set 2022 as a starting point for this year's assessments after 2023 assessments were heavily contested. But determining your maximum 2025 assessment is a little bit more complicated than a single multiplication or division. Legislator Sean Smith and Preston Smith (no relation) have been helping homeowners with appeals since assessments skyrocketed in 2023. This week as they went out again they've been getting questions about what the latest State Tax Commission Order and 15% cap really means. 'People look at it and the first thing they see is, I thought it was only going to be a 15% increase and that was the perception. I've probably answered it online 100 times,' Preston Smith said. 'A lot of people are contacting me thinking they only do the 15 percent once, but you have to do it twice,' Legislator Sean Smith explained. To illustrate how it works with the latest rules using 2022 assessments as the starting point, consider a home with a $100,000 assessed value in 2022. To calculate the maximum assessed value in 2023 multiply $100,000 by 1.15 which is $115,000. But then you have to multiply by 115% again to determine the maximum value a home could be assessed at this year. In this example it would be $132,250. The two 15% increases end up yielding a maximum increase of 32.25% during the two assessment periods. 'I would really urge people to do the math themselves to check it, check and really verify,' Preston Smith said. To do that, however, you have to know your home's 2022 assessed value, which according to those who have received this year's assessments, isn't on this year's notices. You can find that historical information online at the Jackson County Parcel Viewer or Ascend Web. If your increase ends up beyond the allowances under the State order or if you simply don't agree with your value, you still can appeal. Appeals have to be filed by July 14. Download WDAF+ for Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV As for seniors, 40,000 are already enrolled in a new tax credit program freezing tax bills. The county says estimated savings are included on notices, but are subject to change. Both Sean and Preston Smith say they are pressing the Assessor's Office for complete assessment data in 2022, 2023 and 2025 to see how much home values increased, and how many of those increases equated to the maximum allowed if no new construction was done under the State Tax Commission Order without a physical inspection. Penn Entertainment responds to ISS report
Penn Entertainment (PENN) made the following statement in response to the report issued by Institutional Shareholder Services related to the company's 2025 annual meeting of shareholders on June 17: 'The ISS report confirms that two director seats are up for election at the 2025 Annual Meeting and that PENN and HG Vora have nominated and are recommending the same two highly-qualified candidates – Johnny Hartnett and Carlos Ruisanchez. ISS recognizes the open-mindedness with which PENN evaluated HG Vora's director candidates, noting: 'To its credit, the board appears to have given serious consideration to all three dissident nominees, and was open to accepting two of these nominees as its own.' PENN encourages all shareholders to vote for Messrs. Hartnett and Ruisanchez for election and looks forward to welcoming them to the Board. Following the Annual Meeting, 75% of PENN's directors will have joined the Board since 2019. In reaching its conclusions however, the ISS report fails to reflect a realistic view of William Clifford's candidacy. We remind shareholders that, during his time as PENN's CFO, Mr. Clifford advocated against key initiatives that were critical to succeeding in a competitive market. Following Mr. Clifford's departure in 2013 as PENN's CFO, these changes were implemented under the publicly announced P30 program and resulted in meaningful margin improvement. Further, during his interviews with PENN's Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee, Mr. Clifford demonstrated antiquated views of a rapidly changing industry, and the same posture of resistance to exploring value-generating solutions, which we believe would hinder constructive decision-making. PENN attempted multiple resolutions with HG Vora, but all of our resolution attempts were rejected. Given HG Vora's violation of its institutional waivers by multiple state gaming regulators, our ability to allow HG Vora to influence the governance of the Company beyond the evaluation of the nominees was expressly prohibited. We appreciate the feedback and advice we have received from our shareholders in advance of this year's Annual Meeting. We want to assure shareholders that we understand and share their focus on ensuring that PENN's Board of Directors is optimally comprised to oversee the Company's execution on a strategic plan to drive shareholder value. The Board and management team remain committed to creating value for all shareholders and will continue to take actions in support of that objective.'
