Kris Lees hoping Tavi Time can take the first step towards Big Dance redemption with victory in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup
Lees will nearly have all bases covered with runners in four of the five feature races at the meeting, which is expected to take place on a rain affected track.
Tavi Time ($8) will line up as one of the leading contenders in the Group 3 $250,000 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) with Jason Collett back in the saddle.
A spot in this year's $3m Big Dance is the main carrot for Tavi Time, which started favourite in the same race last year before finishing fourth in the main event.
The consistent five-year-old has returned in top order this preparation after finishing a narrow second to Sandpaper first-up at Royal Randwick on All Aged Stakes Day.
'He was good first-up on a solid tempo and was at his top a long way out, which might have just found him out a touch,' Lees said.
'He's going well and the plan is to get him to the Big Dance again.
'He has good soft track form and the one run on really heavy was when the Gosford meeting got transferred to Newcastle so I would probably run him on an (heavy) eight or so.'
Tavi Time will be supported by new arrival Love Poem in the Group 3 $250,000 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m), promising colt Damien in the Clarendon Stakes (1400m) while Brudenell and Bubba's Bay make up a two-pronged attack in the Listed $200,0000 Hawkesbury Gold Rush (1100m).
Love Poem ($16) is making her debut for Lees in the Guineas.

Kiwi trainer Stephen Marsh had the Snitzel filly to start her career and brought her over for the Group 3 P J Bell Stakes at Royal Randwick on day one of The Championships, where she finished ninth.
Lees was a close observer of the race.
'I thought she raced a bit keenly watching the replay and we didn't have her then,' he said.
'She was little keen and has arrived in good order.
'She looks great and has had a tick over trial. From that gate (14) we probably have to give her a chance to be smothered up a touch.'
Damien ($3.90) is on trial for a potential trip to Queensland and a crack at the Group 1 JJ Atkins Stakes if he can perform in the Clarendon Stakes with Jason Collett aboard.
The emerging son of Hellbent put a field of older horses away stylishly first-up in a dominant 1200m event on home turf at Newcastle.
'Damien has returned in good order,' Lees said.
'It was a pretty strong maiden win against older horses, albeit I am not sure how much depth there was, it was a good test for him.

'Being by Hellbent would suggest he will handle the ground but we will see. He looked OK when he trialled on it and wasn't put under a great deal of pressure so I would say it was a little inconclusive on whether he handles it.'
Sprinters Brudenell ($12) and Bubba's Bay ($9) are at opposite ends of their preparations.
Brudenell, to be ridden by Dylan Gibbons, is deep in his preparation and is looking to bounce back to his best after being caught wide and fading in the Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes last start.
Bubba's Bay is returning from a spell with Josh Parr booked to ride.
'Brudenell was a forgive run, off the track and working at Rosehill, they never win,' Lees said.
'He is a fit horse so soft is fine but really heavy is a reconsider.
'Bubba's Bay is a really consistent race mare and her trials have been good.
'She will sprint well fresh and improve with racing. We don't want it really heavy first-up.'
'There are a lot of fillies and mares options for her and I wouldn't rule out a Tatt's Tiara for her.'

Missile Stakes washout sends Brudenell south to Caulfield in chase for $1m milestone
Newcastle trainer Kris Lees is one trainer that's happy NSW officials decided to scrap the Missile Stakes after it was rained out in Sydney last week. The leading NSW provincial trainer had one of his favourite horses Brudenell set to line up in the unofficial start to the Sydney spring carnival but last Saturday's Randwick card was rained out and Racing NSW chose to scrap the race this year rather than rescheduling it. That decision opened the door for Lees to book the float and send the 10-time winner to Melbourne to contest Saturday's Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield. 'The rain washing out Rosehill last Saturday was probably a blessing for us,' Lees said. 'The Missile was set weight and penalties and this is a handicap and where he sits in the pecking order means he's probably better served in a handicap. 'I reckon it's worked out all right.' Brudenell is closing in on $1 million in earnings and his trainer said while he's not the best horse in his Broadmeadow barns, you'd struggle to find a more durable and genuine racehorse. • 'He's a beauty, your typical Macquarie Stud type of horse,' he said. 'Born out at Wellington in Central Western of NSW, he's a tough and hardy horse that cops whatever you throw at him. 'I trained his mum Knit 'N' Purl, I trained his grandam Zingaling and Max (Kris' late father) trained her mother Done That. 'They were all cut from the same cloth and I guess you could say we know a bit about the family. 'I didn't pay a lot for him; it was less than $100,000 ($80,000 at the 2021 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale) and he's been a real stalwart for the stable. 'If he can win on Saturday, he cracks the million and there'd be no horse more deserving.' Brudenell last raced in the Listed Bob Charley AO Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on June 7 – when narrowly beaten by subsequent Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes winner In Flight – and Lees said his tough gelding wouldn't be in need of the run. 'The formguide says he's had a spell but it's not the case,' he said. 'He's been in work the whole time and we had our sights on a race in July but I'd been happy with how he was going so I decided to bypass the July Sprint and wait for the Missile Stakes with an additional trial. 'He races well whenever we travel him and he's a winner at the track. 'Drawn to get the right run and with Mark Zahra in the saddle, you know he's going to get every chance.' Brudenell is a $6.50 chance to join million-dollar earners club at Caulfield on Saturday.

Promising filly Cantiamo made a winning return at Randwick Kensington on Wednesday with Kris Lees expecting bigger things to come
Trainer Kris Lees will contemplate giving classy filly Cantiamo her chance in Sydney's upcoming Princess Series following her determined fresh victory at Randwick Kensington on Wednesday. Cantiamo, sporting a noticeable winter coat, kicked off her campaign on the right note as a hot $1.55 favourite when wearing down the race fit Nullarbor Jane to score in the Myplate 3YO Fillies Maiden Handicap (1150m). Lees holds Cantiamo in high regard and felt the win had plenty of merit on a heavy track in her first run back from a break. 'It was a slowly run race and she will learn a lot from today,' Lees said. 'The second horse went really well and is race fit and up and going so I think there is a bit of merit to the win. 'She is a work in progress and as you saw in the parade she has some improvement to come so I think she will measure up in better races. 'We will see how she comes through this and see if we try to test her now or try and place her softer.' Lees indicated the Group 2 $300,000 Furious Stakes (1200m), the second leg of Sydney's Princess Series, on September 6 was a possible target for Cantiamo. Cantiamo is already prominent in Group 1 $750,000 Flight Stakes (1600m) betting where she shortened from $26 into $15 following her fresh success. Jockey James McDonald did the steering on Cantiamo and it wasn't long before he helped enhance another promising three-year-old's spring claims. The Chris Waller-trained Sixties broke through for his maiden success at start three in emphatic fashion with a seven length romp in the Inglis Xtra Bonus Handicap (1150m). Waller hopes Sixties will play a part in the spring but won't raise the bar too high.'Naturally we would like to see him in a 1200 or 1300m Handicap on a Saturday, well short of the good horses so he can take a gradual step and maybe join up with them in the late spring,' Waller said. The first of the 'good horses' will make their return this Saturday with the Listed $200,000 The Rosebud (1100m) set to be the main event at Rosehill Gardens. The Rosebud attracted a field of seven acceptors but that number was immediately reduced to six when Shaggy was scratched. Trainer Michael Freedman will saddle up the horse to beat in the form of Pallaton ($2.50 favourite) while Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou have key chances with Skyhook ($3.90) and Blitzburg ($4.60).

Kris Lees withdraws Adelaide River from Premier's Cup Prelude at Randwick-Kensington as he sweats on start for Age Of Sail
Trainer Kris Lees has decided against rising classy stayer Adelaide River first-up on the very heavy Kensington track but is sweating on a start for Age Of Sail in the Premier's Cup Prelude (1800m) on Wednesday. The Prelude was added to the Kensington meeting after the Royal Randwick washout last Saturday, with the field size subsequently reduced to 12 starters. This left Age Of Sail ($31) as fifth emergency but there have already been three scratchings including stablemate Adelaide River. 'We are going to need a bit of luck to get Age Of Sail into the race,'' Lees admitted. 'He's had a couple of trials and is ready to go. I've nominated him for a race at Doomben on Saturday if he doesn't get a start in the Prelude.'' Kensington was rated a heavy 10 late on Tuesday which prompted Lees to withdraw the Lloyd and Nick Williams-owned Adelaide River from the Premier's Cup Prelude. 'I've nominated Adelaide River for Rosehill and Caulfield on Saturday so we have options,'' Lees said. Adelaide River came to Australia with a big reputation after showing considerable staying potential earlier in his career including a second placing behind champion Auguste Rodin in the Group 1 Irish Derby. But Adelaide River has been unplaced in five starts since joining the Lees stable although he ran encouraging races when fourth in both the Chelmsford Stakes and Caulfield Stakes last spring. I think now that he is a gelding, we might see the best of him.'' The champion Newcastle trainer also has promising filly Cantiamo resuming in the Myplates Handicap (1150m), Cantiamo is superbly bred by Darley's boom sire Too Darn Hot out of Valencay, herself a direct descendant of the legendary broodmare Eight Carat, dam of five Group 1 winners including champion Octagonal and Mouawad. 'The heavy track is not ideal but she has had a couple of trials and has been fit and ready to go for a while now,'' Lees said. 'If we wait too long we might miss our chance to get her to the better fillies races.'' TAB Fixed Odds price assessors are taking no risks with Cantiamo who is the $2.30 favourite in overnight betting to win the Kensington opener. Lees takes another well-bred three-year-old Woodrow ($19) to the races for the first time in the Inglis Xtra Bonus Handicap (1150m). Woodrow, by champion sire Exceed And Excel out of Group 1 winner Miss Wilson, cost $225,000 at the 2024 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and has shown promise in two recent trials. 'We've also had Woodrow ready to race and I'm happy to give him his chance on Wednesday,'' the trainer said. Lee's other stable starter is former French gelding Valimi ($17) in the PKF Global Handicap (1550m). 'Valimi is a work in progress,'' Lees admitted. 'I've got to say he has been a little disappointing from what we expected of him when he arrived here but I think his most recent run (fourth behind The Years at Warwick Farm) was a step in the right direction. 'He has been comfortable on soft ground overseas, we will put him up on speed and he should run well.''
