"As per the tradition, the Pana or sweet water pots are broken on the chariots so that the spirits and ghosts that surrounded the chariots during the Rath Yatra, get their thirst quenched," Bhaskar Mishra, a researcher in the Jagannath culture, said as quoted by PTI.
'Suna Besha' Of Lord Jagannath In Puri
Around 15 lakh devotees on Sunday witnessed 'Suna Besha' (golden attire) ritual on chariots. The idols were decorated with golden attire, with sibling deities wearing gold jewellery weighing nearly 208 kg on the occasion of Suna Besha, which translates to "Golden Attire" or "Golden Adornment," symbolising divine prosperity, victory of good over evil and the Lord's eternal guardianship over the universe.
It is observed five times a year, with the most significant one taking place on Bahuda Ekadashi, the day after the return of the deities from the Gundicha Temple during the Ratha Yatra festival.

Suna Besha represents the supreme sovereignty of Lord Jagannath and is a celebration of devotion, faith and community. It's a moment when the mortal world merges with the divine, filling devotees with hope, peace, and spiritual awakening.
The tradition of Suna Besha is believed to have originated during the reign of King Kapilendra Deva in the 15th century CE, who donated gold and diamonds to Lord Jagannath after conquering southern kingdoms.

New Delhi Building collapse in Seelampur, Delhi: Two people were killed and eight others — including a one-year-old baby — injured after a four-storey building collapsed in the Welcome area of northeast Delhi on Saturday morning, according to a PTI report. Rescue operations are underway as some people are still feared trapped under the rubble, officials said. The injured include members of a family living in the building and a few bystanders. All eight victims have been hospitalised — seven were taken to JPC Hospital and one to GTB Hospital. A senior police officer said the Welcome Police Station received a call at 7:04 am reporting the collapse near Idgah. On reaching the site, officials found that three storeys of the building had crumbled. Additional DCP (Northeast) Sandeep Lamba said the building's owner, Matloob, lived there with his family. The ground and first floors were reportedly unoccupied. A building across the street also suffered structural damage. Seven fire tenders were rushed to the site in Gali No. 5, Janta Colony near Idgah Road in Seelampur, to assist with rescue efforts, said Delhi Fire Service chief Atul Garg. Ramban road accident, Jammu and Kashmir: In another tragic incident, five people lost their lives and another sustained critical injuries after a private SUV veered off the road and plunged into a 600-foot-deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district, officials confirmed on Saturday. The accident occurred late Friday near Senabathi in the Ukhral Pogal Paristan area. Rescue teams recovered the body of 20-year-old Tauqeer Ahmad at the scene, while five others who were severely injured were rushed to the hospital. However, three of the injured succumbed to their injuries while being transported. Another passenger died at a hospital in Srinagar on Saturday morning. The sole survivor, 25-year-old Yawar Ahmad, remains in critical condition. New Delhi, Jul 12 (PTI) As the preliminary report into one of the country's worst aircraft accidents has been released by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), here is a brief look at the related happenings since June 12. * Air India's nearly 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 aircraft, VT-ANB, enroute to London Gatwick crashed soon after take off into the residential quarters of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad on June 12. * There were 242 people, including 12 crew members, on board the ill-fated plane. While only one passenger survived, many died on the ground as well due to the crash. The tragic incident claimed a total of 260 lives. * The lone survivor, British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh (45) was seated in '11A' -- the window seat near one of the emergency exit doors. * The Ahmedabad crash is the first time that Boeing's best-selling 787 plane suffered a fatal accident resulting in hull loss. * On June 13, AAIB initiated an investigation and set up a multi-disciplinary team. * A high-level multi-disciplinary committee, headed by the Union home secretary, to examine the causes that led to the crash and to also suggest comprehensive guidelines to prevent such incidents in the future set up on June 13. * Any theory going around the plane crash will be analysed, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said on June 14. * Both the Cockpit Voice Recorders (CVRs) and Flight Data Recorders (FDRs) were recovered -- one from a rooftop of the building at the crash site on June 13 and the other from the debris on June 16. * The black boxes were brought from Ahmedabad to Delhi by IAF aircraft with full security on June 24. * The front black box arrived AAIB Lab, Delhi with the DG, AAIB at 1400 hours on June 24. * The rear black box was brought by a second AAIB team and reached AAIB Lab, Delhi at 1715 hours on June 24. * Data extraction process for the black boxes began on June 24. * On June 25, the Crash Protection Module (CPM) from the front black box was safely retrieved; the memory module was successfully accessed and its data downloaded. * Observer status has been accorded to the UN body International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO's) expert in the ongoing probe. * Air India is observing 'Safety Pause', the deliberate temporary scale-back of its international and domestic networks. * The airline has reduced 38 services per week on international routes besides suspension of services on 3 overseas routes operated with wide-body planes. Fuel switches cut off before AI plane crash; no recommended action for 787-8 operators for now: AAIB
New Delhi, Jul 12 (PTI) Both switches feeding fuel to the two engines of Air India flight 171 were cut off followed by pilot confusion before the plane crashed in Ahmedabad, seconds after taking off, the first investigation report into the crash has revealed. It said that one pilot asked why he had shut off the fuel, and the other responded he didn't do it. The crash on June 12 was the first fatal disaster involving a Boeing 787, killing a total of 260 people -- all but one of the 242 people on board the aircraft died -- when the plane ploughed into a medical college hostel. The preliminary report by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, released on Saturday, recommended no action for now for the operators of Boeing 787-8 planes. At the time the aircraft took off, the co-pilot was flying the plane, while the captain was monitoring. "The aircraft achieved the maximum recorded airspeed of 180 Knots IAS at about 08:08:42 UTC and immediately thereafter, the Engine 1 and Engine 2 fuel cutoff switches transitioned from RUN to CUTOFF position one after another with a time gap of 01 sec," the report said. As per the report, the engine N1 and N2 began to decrease from their take-off values as the fuel supply to the engines was cut off. "In the cockpit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cutoff. The other pilot responded that he did not do so," it said. The aircraft took off at 08:08:39 UTC (13:38:39 IST) and at about 08:09:05 UTC (13:39:05 IST) one of the pilots transmitted 'MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY'. "The ATCO (Air Traffic Controller) enquired about the call sign. ATCO did not get any response but observed the aircraft crashing outside the airport boundary and activated the emergency response," the report said. In the report of the fatal plane accident that happened in around 30 seconds after take off, AAIB also said fuel samples taken from bowsers and tanks used to refuel the aircraft were tested at the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) Lab and were found satisfactory. The preliminary report was widely anticipated to throw more light on what could have led to the crash, which was one of the worst in India in decades, and also it was the first accident involving a Boeing 787 aircraft that resulted in hull loss. The AAIB said the wreckage site activities, including drone photography/ videography have been completed and the wreckage has been moved to a secure area near the airport. "Both engines were retrieved from the wreckage site and quarantined at a hangar in the airport. Components of interest for further examinations have been identified and quarantined," it said. According to the report, fuel samples taken from the bowsers and tanks used to refuel the aircraft were tested at the DGCA's Lab and were found satisfactory. "Very limited amount of fuel samples could be retrieved from the APU filter and Refuel/Jettison valve of left wing. The testing of these samples will be done at a suitable facility capable of carrying out the test with the limited available quantity," it said. The AAIB is gathering additional details based on initial leads and data downloaded from the forward Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorder (EAFR) is being analysed. "At this stage of investigation, there are no recommended actions to B787-8 and/or GE GEnx-1B engine operators and manufacturers," the report said. The plane that crashed was powered by GEnx-1B engines. Statements of the witnesses and the surviving passenger have been obtained by the Investigators. The complete analysis of post-mortem reports of the crew and the passengers is being undertaken to corroborate aeromedical findings with the engineering appreciation, the AAIB said. The probe is continuing and the investigation team will review and examine additional evidence, records and information that is being sought from the stakeholders. There were 230 passengers on board -- 15 in the business class and 215, including two infants, in economy class. The Pilot In Command (PIC) had more than 15,638 hours of flying experience while the first officer had over 3,403 hours of flying experience. Air India on Saturday said it is working closely with regulators and other stakeholders, and will continue to cooperate with the authorities in the ongoing probe into the plane crash. Boeing, in a statement, said it continues to support the investigation and Air India. "We will defer to the AAIB to provide information about AI171, in adherence with the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization protocol known as Annex 13," it added.
