Washington Nationals vs Kansas City Royals Game Thread

While the Nationals have shown some fight, they have come up short in their first two games in Kansas City. They just have not quite had the pitching to get the job done. Now they look to avoid the sweep as they wrap up the road trip.
Miguel Cairo has made a couple changes to his lineup. After a couple days off, the struggling Brady House will be back in the lineup. Drew Millas will also get the start behind the dish today. Robert Hassell III will remain in center field over Jacob Young. Jake Irvin will get the ball for the final game of this series.
With a righty on the mound, Mike Yastrzemski will be back in the leadoff spot. John Rave will also get a start in the outfield. Otherwise, it is a very familiar lineup for the Royals, who are fighting for their playoff lives. Their ace Seth Lugo will be on the mound.

While they have not gotten blown out, the Nats have been unable to get the job done in Kansas City so far. Now, they will try to avoid a sweep. It has been a solid road trip so far, but a sweep would be demoralizing. Comment your Nationals related thoughts down below.

Stefanski likely to reveal Browns' starting QB for opener this week

CLEVELAND (AP) — Coach Kevin Stefanski is expected to announce this week the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback for the Sept. 7 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. 'I want to get through the next couple days. But certainly that's something that we're going to do here sooner than later,' Stefanski said on Sunday about announcing his starter. 'I need to get the football team in here, talk to the players, those type of things.' The Browns were off on Sunday after their 22-13 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. They return to work on Monday with practices leading up to Saturday's preseason finale over the Los Angeles Rams mostly being geared like a normal game week. 'We'll give the guys a normal game plan as you would get ready for the game," Stefanski said. "We will do more competitive periods than we would say in the regular season, so we'll do plenty of Browns versus Browns in practice, as well as introducing carded periods where we'll be simulating the Rams offense and defense.' Joe Flacco has not played in either preseason game, but has seen most of the first-team snaps throughout camp as well as getting plenty of work in joint practices against Carolina and Philadelphia. The 40-year old Flacco is the only one of Cleveland's quarterbacks in the four-way competition that has not been sidelined because of an injury during training camp. Kenny Pickett has been mostly limited the past couple of weeks after suffering a hamstring injury on July 26. Shedeur Sanders missed the second day of joint practices against the Eagles and did not play in the game after suffering an oblique injury last Wednesday. Stefanski was optimistic that Pickett or Sanders could possibly return to practice sometime this week. Sanders got the start against Carolina and completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two TD passes. Dillon Gabriel, who did not play in the preseason opener at Carolina on Aug. 8 because of a hamstring strain, played the first half against the Eagles. In five series, he completed 13 of 18 passes for 143 yards. Three of the drives resulted in points while the other two ended with turnovers, including a 75-yard, pick-6 by Eagles safety Andrew Mukuba. What pleased Stefanski the most about Dillon was that he completed all six of his passes on third down. The Browns were 6 of 8 on third down in the first half. 'Protection was good. We were able to find completions. But those third down conversions were huge,' Stefanski said. ___ AP NFL:

Lions Fans React to Injury Update on Sam LaPorta

Lions Fans React to Injury Update on Sam LaPorta originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Lions are gearing up for another NFL campaign after winning the NFC North title in 2024. Unfortunately, the team just got some unfortunate injury news before the start of the 2025 season. On Thursday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell announced that third-year tight end Sam LaPorta has suffered an undisclosed injury. The injury is not considered "major," but the 24-year-old pass catcher is expected to miss at least a few days with the issue. "LaPorta will be down. It's not major, but he will miss a little bit of time here," Campbell said before the Lions' second joint practice with the Miami Dolphins on Thursday. While LaPorta's injury is not considered serious, some Lions fans are sounding the alarm on what could spell future injury issues for the star TE. "I don't like this," one wrote. "He seems injury prone," another added. "This team is cursed, if it weren't for the injuries last year, they would have won the Super Bowl," another said. "Don't overreact. Just be right for Week 1," another wrote. LaPorta burst onto the NFL scene as an elite tight end weapon in 2023, reeling in 86 catches for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns in his rookie season with the Lions. His record-breaking statistics regressed in Year 2, seeing him collect 60 catches for 726 yards and seven touchdowns. The Lions will face off against the Dolphins in their next preseason matchup on Saturday afternoon. The team will kickoff its regular-season schedule with a matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Sep. 7. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 14, 2025, where it first appeared.

Sophie Cunningham ruled out of Fever vs. Sun after going down with a knee injury

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Connecticut Sun with a knee injury, marking the latest injury to a Fever squad that has already been decimated. The injury occurred during the second quarter of Sunday's game. Connecticut guard Bria Hartley drove to the basket but fell, and collided with Cunningham's leg on her way down. Cunningham stayed down as the rest of the team went to the other side of the court, clutching her right knee and visibly in pain. She was helped off the court and into the locker room, wearing a towel over her head. Cunningham's injury is just the latest for the Fever, who have lost most of their guards due to injury. Indiana star Caitlin Clark has missed most of the season with a groin injury, while the other two point guards — Aari McDonald and veteran Sydney Colson — both suffered season-ending injuries in a loss to the Phoenix Mercury earlier this month. Colson went down with an ACL tear, while McDonald suffered a broken bone in her foot. Last week, the Fever signed veteran guard Odyssey Sims to a hardship contract to help replenish their point guard depth. Sims made her first start for Indiana in Sunday's game. This story will be updated.
