'It's clearly a huge loss'
Outside of the club, practically nothing was known about the Norwegian defender when he arrived from Swedish top-flight side IF Brommapojkarna in July 2024.
Heggem cost under £600k and, fast forward 13 months, he is a Norway international and is going to be playing in Serie A after sealing a move which is worth in the region of £10m.
He was deservedly crowned the Baggies' player of the season after featuring in all but one of their Championship games in the 2024-25 campaign, and provided further proof of his credentials with a solid performance for his national team in a 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory against Italy during the summer - which may have alerted Bologna to his talents, although it is likely he was on their radar already.

Roma working on loan deal for Manchester United's Jadon Sancho
Roma are working on a loan deal to sign Manchester United's Jadon Sancho. The Serie A side have made an offer for the England international but there is an acknowledgement that it would be a tricky deal to complete. Roma are also in talks to sign Aston Villa's Leon Bailey on loan as they look to add to their attacking options. Advertisement The Athletic reported on June 10 that Borussia Dortmund had expressed their interest to Sancho's representatives over a return to the club United paid £73million (now $98.9m) to sign him from in the summer of 2021. Sancho had options in England and around Europe that he was expected to explore before making a decision on his next step. His United contract runs until next June, with the option of a further year. The 25-year-old spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Chelsea, where he made 42 appearances. Chelsea's agreement with United last summer included an obligation to make the move permanent for £25m. The clause was triggered in April when it was mathematically guaranteed that Chelsea could not finish lower than 15th in the Premier League. However, Chelsea did not agree personal terms with Sancho and exercised the option to pay £5m to send him back to United. He scored five goals and provided ten assists during his time at Stamford Bridge, helping the side win the Conference League and finish fourth in the Premier League. Sancho was one of five United first-team players left out of their pre-season tour squad, alongside Marcus Rashford — who has since joined Barcelona on loan — Tyrell Malacia, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony. The group were asked not to report for training until after 5pm, after Ruben Amorim and the rest of the first-team group had left Carrington, earlier this summer. Sancho has played 83 games for United, with his last appearance for the club in the 2024 Community Shield against rivals Manchester City, when he came on as a substitute. He only made three appearances for United in 2023-24 after a public disagreement with then-head coach Erik ten Hag, resulting in him being excluded from the squad and re-join Dortmund on loan in January 2024. Roma finished fifth in Serie A last season and will play in the Europa League this term under new head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. Spot the pattern. Today's Wrexham Daily Headlines
Wrexham Set to Shatter Transfer Record with Broadhead Deal Wrexham prepared to break club record with £10m move for Nathan Broadhead Ollie Palmer's crucial brace helps Wrexham advance in EFL Cup Kieffer Moore's injury fears quelled, set to be available for West Brom clash Callum Doyle and other defensive targets eyed to bolster depth Tactical tweaks on the horizon to better utilise new signings A record-breaking sign signifies intent as Wrexham eye their next Championship fixture. Transfer Watch Wrexham's pursuit of Ipswich Town's Nathan Broadhead is poised to culminate in a club record £10 million signing, underscoring their ambitious Championship aspirations. The Bangor-born forward, previously in Wrexham's youth ranks, has the potential to bolster the Welsh club's attacking options significantly. Broadhead's recent performances have showcased his ability, and his impending addition is a testament to Wrexham's commitment to competing at this level. His move is seen as a strategic reinforcement amid a busy transfer window that already includes notable acquisitions such as Lewis O'Brien and Conor Coady. Wrexham fans can delight in this high-stakes transfer that promises to make waves in the Championship. Injury News Concerns over Kieffer Moore's injury have eased, with reports indicating that the forward's knock may not be as severe as initially feared. Moore, a key figure in both build-up play and finishing, remains a pivotal component of Wrexham's attacking setup. His availability ahead of the upcoming fixture against West Brom will be a significant boost for manager Phil Parkinson, who is already navigating the challenges of squad depth early in the campaign. Squad Insight The call for reinforcements continues at Wrexham, with defensive solidity emerging as a pressing need. The interest in Manchester City's Callum Doyle highlights the club's efforts to strengthen their backline. However, the task of integrating new faces into the squad remains, especially as battles intensify across the Championship landscape. Manager Phil Parkinson's search for additional signings—possibly up to four more—reflects a proactive approach in enhancing both tactical flexibility and squad depth, crucial for surviving the rigours of the second tier. Tactical Notes Wrexham's recent nail-biter against Hull City in the EFL Cup underlined their fighting spirit, with veteran Ollie Palmer stepping up in the decisive moments to spark a remarkable late comeback. Despite a gut-wrenching experience at Southampton, where they narrowly slipped to defeat, tactical recalibrations are apparent. Parkinson appears poised to experiment with formations that could better exploit the talents of new signings, aiming for a blend of resilience and attacking fluidity that will stand them in good stead against Championship opposition. Quick mentions Ollie Palmer's dazzling late doubles against Hull affirm his knack for clutch contributions. Wrexham's journey continues with home advantage as they prepare to face West Brom. Phil Parkinson reflects on tactical adjustments necessary after Southampton setback. Kieffer Moore's assessment suggests he is fit for Wrexham's Championship endeavours. Co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney remain pivotal in fuelling club excitement and momentum. 📸 Stephen Pond - 2025 Getty Images

Barca execs agree to risk €7m in personal wealth in bid to register Rashford, Garcia
Follow live updates from the summer transfer window as the new Premier League season edges ever closer Getty Images Barcelona's board agreed to take emergency financial action at a meeting yesterday as the club continues to try to register their new signings in time to start their La Liga title defence on Saturday. With three days to go before Barca's first match of the 2025-26 campaign, Hansi Flick's major signings of the summer — including new goalkeeper Joan Garcia and Manchester United loanee striker Marcus Rashford — are still not eligible to play. Because Barca have been overspending on their salary limit — calculated by La Liga for each club according to their revenue — they have not been able to register new players. Now, in an attempt to ease the situation, Barca executives have prepared the action of putting their own personal wealth at risk as part of a bank guarantee worth €7million (£6m, $8.2m). GO FURTHER Barcelona board agree to risk €7m in personal wealth in bid to register Rashford, Garcia Getty Images That is the question on everyone's lips after a few days of speculation for the Italy goalkeeper. It looks like he will be on the move away from PSG, who won the UEFA Super Cup last night with a penalty shootout win over Tottenham Hotspur, following their signing of talented youngster Lucas Chevalier. Subscriber Petter C. asks: 'Chelsea are in need of a goalkeeper and Donnarumma seems to be available. Are there any possibilities of a deal here?.' A very valid question... send yours to: live@ Now for one from Europe, more specifically Italy's Serie A. Alvaro Morata has joined Como on loan from AC Milan after cutting short his stay at Galatasaray. The Spain international arrives on a season-long loan arrangement with an obligation to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign. The 32-year-old joined Galatasaray in January on a 12-month loan deal, while the Turkish club also held an option to make the move permanent. GO FURTHER Alvaro Morata joins Como on loan from Milan after Galatasaray spell cut short Getty Images Over to Old Trafford now, where Laurie Whitwell brings news of advanced talks between Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion over a proposed loan for Toby Collyer. A host of Championship clubs have registered an interest in Collyer but West Brom appear to have won the race, with the structure of the deal agreed. The West Midlands club believe the 21-year-old can aid their push for promotion to the Premier League under head coach Ryan Mason. Getty Images While we are on the subject of incoming players at Elland Road, this is a fresh one from Beren Cross and James Horncastle this morning. Leeds are interested in a move for Milan forward Noah Okafor. There has been no official approach or club-to-club talks at this stage though the 25-year-old is a player that Leeds are looking at in the final weeks of the window. This will be one to keep an eye on. This was an interesting one from David Ornstein yesterday. Leeds United have reached an agreement in principle to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a free agent after his departure from Everton. The 28-year-old striker has been available since he confirmed in June that he would be leaving the Merseyside club as a free agent when his contract expired. He spent nine years at Goodison Park after joining from Sheffield United in 2016. He scored 71 goals in 274 appearances for Everton but his time at the club was plagued by injuries. Everton had offered the forward a new deal last summer, but an agreement never materialised. How about this one from yesterday via David Ornstein and Jacob Tanswell ? They report that Roma are in discussions with Aston Villa over a potential deal to sign winger Leon Bailey. The 28-year-old signed a new contract in February 2024, which runs until 2027. He is one of multiple players available to leave the Midlands club, including Alex Moreno and Leander Dendoncker. Clubs in Turkey — including Besiktas — and the Saudi Pro League are also said to be keen on Bailey, but Roma are emerging as the strongest suitor. GO FURTHER Roma in talks to sign Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey Getty Images Liverpool have reached an agreement with Parma to sign defender Giovanni Leoni. The Premier League club will pay a fee in the region of £26million (€30m) plus add-ons for the 18-year-old Italian youth international. The player has been permitted to travel to Merseyside to agree personal terms and undergo a medical, which is expected to begin on Thursday. The club's plan is for Leoni to be immediately integrated into the first-team set-up for the upcoming season with any suggestion of a loan move completely ruled out. GO FURTHER Liverpool reach agreement to sign Giovanni Leoni from Parma The Athletic Some news from Liverpool to bring you now... The big transfer news of the past few days involves Liverpool and their pursuit of Marc Guehi. The Crystal Palace captain is into the final year of his contract in south London and according to our transfer expert David Ornstein and Liverpool correspondent James Pearce , the Premier League champions have held talks over his potential signing. If he doesn't move this summer, Guehi is expected to leave as a free agent in the summer of 2026 when his contract expires as he has no intention of signing a new deal at Selhurst Park. Speaking after Sunday's Community Shield triumph, Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted that the England centre-back may have to be sold this summer. (Photo:) Sunderland have confirmed that Granit Xhaka has been appointed as club captain ahead of the side's return to the Premier League. Xhaka joined Sunderland in the summer from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to €20million (£13.4m; $23.3m). The 32-year-old, who also captains Switzerland in international competition, has worn the armband in pre-season for Sunderland. He briefly captained Arsenal in the 2019-20 season before he was stripped of the captaincy following an incident at the Emirates in October 2019 where the Switzerland international appeared to swear at the crowd after he was booed when being substituted. We know that the 2025-26 season across Europe is about to return, but there is so much more than just that here on The Athletic. The U.S. Open, the last tennis major of the year, is less than a fortnight away while the Ryder Cup will grab the attention of those of us in the UK and United States at the end of September. And before that, the new NFL and College Football seasons start. There is truly no better place than The Athletic to follow all that and more. You can subscribe on an exclusive offer here. The Premier League has strict rules about the number and type of players that its teams can submit as part of their official squad list for the upcoming season. Once the deadline closes on September 1, clubs will submit a 25-player squad list. From that number, a minimum of eight players must meet the league's 'home grown player' criteria. A player qualifies as home grown if they have been registered with an English of Welsh club for three full seasons before their 21st birthday. Under-21 players at any Premier League club do not need to be registered in the 25-man squad and can play at any time in the season for their team. The primary period for player trading opened for Premier League and EFL clubs back on June 16. They will have until deadline day on September 1 to conclude any trading. And this year, the window shuts earlier than the previous 11pm deadline — at a universally agreed and very civilised time of 7pm. As long as deal sheets are submitted to the FA before that 7pm deadline, clubs and staff have a grace period of two hours to conclude paperwork on any late deals. Good morning!
