SEC amps up fines to $500,000 for rushing field, storming court
MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The Southeastern Conference is ratcheting up penalties on schools whose fans storm the field or rush the court, doing away with an escalating fine system and now charging $500,000 per incident.
'The motivation was 'field rushing is field rushing, the first time or the 18th time,'' commissioner Greg Sankey said Thursday in announcing the decision. 'The random nature of, if you're the one getting rushed, it doesn't feel good. It might be the first time (it happened) there, but it might be your sixth time in a row, literally.'
The conference also has the authority to wave the fine if the visiting team and officials are allowed to get to the locker room before fans descend.
The new policy replaces an old one that called for an escalating fine structure that started with $100,000 for the first offense, raised to $250,000 for the second then hit $500,000 for the third and subsequent incidents.
The SEC first instituted a fine structure for field storming in 2004, but it didn't stop the problem.
In 2022, Tennessee fans stormed the field after ending a 15-game losing streak to Alabama. But things became congested and some of the Crimson Tide players were trapped; a video surfaced of a Tide player thrusting his arm toward a woman's head as he tried to get off the field.
Last year, Vanderbilt beat Alabama at home, triggering fans to rush the field, tear down the goalposts and parade them to the Cumberland River. The Commodores were fined $100,000 and, per SEC policy, that money went to Alabama, which also received $100,000 for an incident after a loss at Tennessee last season.
Vanderbilt got fined twice more last basketball season, the last of which cost $500,000.
'We try to set some expectations to the fan base of 'We'll welcome your celebration, but let's let the team from the visiting institution and the officials depart,'' Sankey said.

Creighton breezes to 11-4 victory over Kansas in nightcap of Fayetteville Regional

(AP) — Nolan Sailors drove in four runs and fell a single shy of hitting for the cycle as No. 3 seed Creighton rolled to an 11-4 victory over second-seeded Kansas in the nightcap of the Fayetteville Regional on Friday. Creighton (42-14) will play No. 1 seed Arkansas on Saturday. Kansas (43-16) plays an elimination game against No. 4 seed North Dakota State to begin the day. Sailors had a two-run double in the middle of a seven-run sixth inning to help the Bluejays pull away from a 3-3 tie. He drew a bases-loaded walk when Creighton scored twice in the third to grab a 3-2 lead. He hit a two-out solo homer in the seventh for Creighton's final run. Sailors tripled leading off the fifth but was stranded. Creighton's top three batters in the order — Tate Gillen, Matt Scherrman and Sailors — had three hits apiece and combined to go 9 for 15 with six RBIs and five runs scored. Ian Koosman (9-4) allowed one run on two hits in four innings of relief to get the win. Dominic Cancellieri started and allowed three runs on four hits in four innings. Rangers' slumbering bats come alive in 11-1 victory over Cardinals
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Marcus Semien hit a two-run homer and matched his career high with four hits, Jack Leiter pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings for the first time in 15 major league starts and the Texas Rangers routed the St. Louis Cardinals 11-1 on Friday night. Leiter (4-2) allowed three singles and matched a career high with six strikeouts, throwing a career-high 96 pitches. Semien drove in three runs. He was 10 for 70 in his previous 21 games. Sam Haggerty tied his career best with three hits and had three RBIs, Josh Jung also had three hits and three RBIs, and Wyatt Langford hit a two-run home run. Haggerty scored the first of his three runs on a first-inning single by Josh Jung that ended a team-wide 0-for-30 drought.
