Pedersen: Arab and Foreign Investments on the Way to Syria - Jordan News
UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, confirmed the existence of an international consensus on the need to support Syria and ensure the success of the new government in achieving stability and economic development. اضافة اعلان In an interview with Syrian Al-Ikhbariya TV on Friday, Pedersen praised the decisions by the United States and the European Union to lift sanctions imposed on Syria, noting that such steps provide a real opportunity for economic progress, although they require time and further developments to take full effect. The UN envoy explained that following the easing of sanctions, many investors from Arab countries, as well as from Turkey, Europe, and the United States, have expressed interest in investing in Syria. He emphasized that progress in the security file is essential for advancing economic development. Pedersen noted that more than 17 million Syrians are still in need of humanitarian assistance. He also stated that the United Nations is closely monitoring the details surrounding the lifting of sanctions, especially those related to the humanitarian provisions of the Caesar Act. He called for the development of a clear regulatory framework to encourage investment and establish a secure economic environment. He stressed that 'stability is a fundamental condition for any economic or political transformation,' adding that while some aspects of security have been stabilized, the UN will continue to support the political process. Pedersen affirmed that cooperation between the United Nations and the Syrian government is very good, with the government fulfilling its duties to enhance security and stability across the country.
Pedersen also pointed out that Israel continues to violate the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and carries out repeated attacks on Syrian territory, saying that there is no justification for these assaults, which must stop immediately. (Syrian TV)

British FM says Morocco's autonomy plan for W. Sahara 'most credible' solution
British foreign minister David Lammy said on Sunday that Morocco's autonomy plan for the territory of Western Sahara was the "most credible" solution to the decades long dispute, reversing London's long-standing position. Speaking in Rabat, Lammy said Morocco's 2007 plan represented "the most credible, viable and pragmatic basis for a lasting resolution of the dispute". Britain previously backed self-determination for the former Spanish colony, which Morocco claims as an integral part of its kingdom. He urged all parties involved in the dispute to 'urgently and constructively engage in the political process led by the United Nations' to reach a solution. The statement marks a shift in the UK's position. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Britain had previously supported efforts to achieve a political solution that ensures the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination. Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita welcomed the UK's new stance, saying it would 'significantly strengthen momentum and push forward the UN-led process toward a final, mutually agreed solution based on the autonomy initiative.' Morocco views its autonomy plan — which proposes self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty — as the only viable solution to the dispute over Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony that the UN classifies as a 'non-self-governing territory.' The Algeria-backed Polisario Front continues to demand full independence. Morocco controls most of the contested territory, where the conflict has persisted for nearly 50 years. In October 2024, the UN Security Council renewed its call for Morocco, the Polisario Front, Algeria, and Mauritania to resume negotiations aimed at reaching a 'durable and mutually acceptable' resolution.

Hamas responds to US ambassador to 'Israel' controversial statement
Hamas issued a statement following the United States Ambassador to 'Israel' Mike Huckabee's remarks – where he suggested carving out a piece of the French Riviera to create a Palestinian state. Huckabee's comments came in an attack against France after President Emmanuel Macron discussed a potential recognition of a Palestinian state. Huckabee described the move as 'revolting.' Hamas condemned his statements, saying it is a 'blatant insult to the legitimate national rights of our people' and 'a flagrant violation of international law and United Nations resolutions.' 'The remarks reflect the United States' full alignment with the Zionist occupation and its expansion colonial agenda,' the statement read. Huckabee called France's move 'incredibly inappropriate in the midst of a war that Israel is dealing with to go out and present something that I think increasingly Israelis are steadfast against.' 'October 7 changed a lot of things,' Huckabee told Fox News. 'If France is really so determined to see a Palestinian state, I have a suggestion for them — carve out a piece of the French Riviera and create a Palestinian state. They are welcome to do that, but they are not welcome to impose that kind of pressure on a sovereign nation.' 'And I find it revolting that they think they have the right to do such a thing,' Huckabee said, declaring that the United States will not participate in the June conference.
